DEAR READERS: Merry Christmas to everybody celebrating the season! Special warmth goes out to people experiencing a tough holiday season because of health or financial struggles, or those unable to be together with loved ones.

If you’re low on funds to buy presents for those close to you, let me tell you about a very special gift you can conjure up at the last minute. They are homemade “love-and appreciation” lists and cost next to nothing, yet can feel extremely valuable to those who receive them.

On some nice, decorated paper (or whatever you can manage) wish your loved one a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays in big lettering at the top. Then, underneath, write a list of their qualities, deeds and quirks, and why they’re important to you. Examples of attributes could be things such as a big smile, crazy jokes, kindness to animals, warm hugs, beautiful laugh, Earth-shaking snores, generosity or a willingness to always listen and be there for people.

If you have some colourful cord or a little ribbon, roll the list up like a scroll and tie it nicely. Your list can be long or short, but you can be sure a lengthier inventory will thrill the recipient. Loving, handmade offerings such as this may be kept and treasured for a long time.

So here’s to creativity and thoughtfulness, and a very happy holiday season.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m hoping you’ll answer ASAP because I’m so miserable. I’m not sleeping because I told an “untruth” about a woman I know and I got a job she wanted. I can’t seem to muster up a confession to fix things with her.

I want to try to fix it before the end of the year because I feel sick about it, but I’m such a wuss. Would it be so wrong to ask one of my friends to come with me when I finally go to confess? I know that might make me look even weaker — but it just can’t wait.

Today I found out where this woman I wronged could get a similar job in January at a different company, and they’re hiring soon. I have to do something now.

— Repentant Schemer, North End

Dear Schemer: Imagine how you would feel if a sorry person came to you with a confession they needed to make. What if they brought a supporter along to help get them through the door? Not such a big deal.

The important thing is the friend who offended (that’s you) is truly sorry, wants to confess and, in your case, actually knows a way to right the wrong. But you’ll have to move quickly, or that new job opportunity mat be gone.

Once the confession is made, you’ll be able to start sleeping again and that will be your reward. How your friend is going to take the news is another question.

Cold comfort, creative fire on Winnipeg winter set

When the movie production team for the Universal Studios release Violent Night showed up in Winnipeg around this time last winter, it brought 42-year-old Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola to the project, and it must be said, rarely has a director been so seemingly perfect for this kind of movie.

MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Libra.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The day is a mixed bag. For the most part, it’s romantic, friendly, congenial and a great time to socialize with others and enjoy playful activities with kids. Nevertheless, you might meet a real sourpuss or someone who is a wet blanket. Keep things light!

Truck driver blew stop sign in Broncos crash

Chris Purdy and Bill Graveland, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Monday, Jan. 28, 2019

MELFORT, Sask. - Grieving families sobbed Monday as they heard how a semi-truck driver barrelled through an oversized stop sign with a flashing red light and failed to avoid a high-speed crash with a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team.

An agreed statement of facts about the collision that killed 16 people on the bus and injured 13 more was entered in a Saskatchewan court as part of a heart-wrenching first day of a sentencing hearing for the truck driver. Roughly half of 75 victim impact statements to be submitted by friends and family members were read out.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 30, of Calgary, sat next to his defence lawyers as court heard he was going between 86 and 96 km/h with a load of peat moss when he drove into a rural intersection north of Tisdale last April.

The sun wasn't in his eyes. He wasn't distracted by a cellphone. And he hadn't been drinking or doing drugs. Weather and road conditions were also good, said Crown prosecutor Thomas Healey.

‘You vote with your bike’: cyclists celebrate freedoms, call for increased safety

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 4:20 PM CDT

Patty Wiens got dressed up in her sparkly, hot pink cowboy boots to pedal and talk politics with more than 100 other people on Sunday.

The founder of Winnipeg’s Fancy Women Bike Ride called on attendees of the 2026 event to ask candidates in the upcoming civic election — a half-dozen of whom were in attendance — about their active transportation platforms.

“We’re here today, in an election year, to remind you that you vote with your bike,” Wiens told a crowd of nearly 120 cyclists gathered on the legislature grounds for the group ride.

“When (city council) candidates come to your door and ask what’s important to you, you’re going to say, ‘I want to ride my bike safely in the city. What are you going to do about it?’”
