Hey there, time traveller!

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My man and I hit a big bump in the road when he took off and went for a long drive last weekend — for hours. He said it was to relax so he could sleep better, but I know he went to see another woman or maybe even a man. I can’t tell with him.

When he finally came home, I was emotionless and stunned, and then I felt hurt and cried. I sensed where he went, and since then there has really been no attention, no love and no sex from him.

At first, I tried to brush it off as a reaction to his high-stress job, so I asked about that. But he just laughed and said no, he still loves his work. But I sensed he didn’t still love me.

Finally, I demanded to know what was going on, and he said, “Oh, shut up. I just don’t feel like making love with you anymore.”

How could that be? We used to go like rabbits — and now nothing? Well, I can’t live in a sexless relationship, I told him.

I asked if it was another woman. He said no too loudly and it sounded like a lie. I got angry and said, “I can’t live the rest of my life not feeling love and attraction from my man.” Then he went dead quiet and I went to my mom’s place.

The next morning I came home and he was gone. Now I’m really angry. I don’t even know where he’s living and I really need to find him. How can I? I have all his clothes and furniture.

— Abandoned, West End

Dear Abandoned: This sounds like a man who already had a new romance and a skeleton wardrobe ready to move elsewhere, but didn’t have the guts to tell you the truth. Then again, maybe that romance is not so new. He had another place to stay in a hurry and it was no problem for him to go and stay there on short notice.

To find him, just call his place of work. You certainly don’t have to protect his reputation.

Just tell the person who answers the phone who you are and that your ex’s clothes and belongings are in boxes out on your front porch or driveway. You can bet that workmate will get in touch with him ASAP and pass along your message.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I recently met a woman who excited my soul. However, she was working for a man I wouldn’t trust with any woman.

I took her for lunch the next week and we were having a great time, but trouble was already brewing.

In the middle of lunch, her boss showed up and joined us, uninvited. She didn’t seem upset and just looked at me and winked. Then he paid for lunch for all of us and got up and left. What did this mean?

— Just Wondering, downtown Winnipeg

Dear Wondering: It sounds like this woman is “his” woman at work, even if her boss is in a relationship with someone else. He was just dropping by to say he knows where she goes, and express some kind of male dominance.

You might want to have a talk with this woman about her boss’s aggressive behaviour before things go any further.

RCMP, OCN seek mother of dead newborn or fetus

Morgan Modjeski 1 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

The RCMP and Opaskwayak Cree Nation leaders are trying to identify the mother of a newborn baby or fetus found deceased in Umpherville on Monday.

RCMP said the remains were found between two homes and on Friday, a news release from leadership of the northern First Nation called for anyone with information to come forward.

“The RCMP has advised leadership that it is continuing its investigation and seeks to identify the mother and family of the deceased newborn and determine the surrounding circumstances,” said Chief Michael Constant, in the release.

Recognizing the discovery is “deeply troubling” for the community, band leadership expressed its concern and said it is “exploring the need for additional supports for the health of mothers and families.”

Private governance or public good

David Nutbean 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

The Manitoba government recently held public forums to discuss regulations for Bill 51, the Public Sector Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Governance Act. I was able to participate in the meeting in Brandon and there was also a session in Winnipeg.

I was a bit fired up, ready to rail about data centres and phone terms and conditions and generally give it to big tech. The discussion, however, was focused on what the public sector responses should be regarding cybersecurity, data and privacy protections, and AI usage in government.

With all the recent attention on social media bans, the harms of AI, misinformation and the like, I was somewhat disappointed that these would not be tackled directly in this meeting. Those issues may be discussed at future forums.

At this event, as focus groups developed responses, the discussion between private companies and public governance kept getting mixed in, pointing out the reliance of government services on private companies in running their digital operations. As government operations become more dependent on digital infrastructure and towards AI agency and control, rethinking how technology is implemented may be crucial to our democracy.

Ahava Rabba’s alternative service attracts alternative Jews

Sharon Chisvin 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Winnipeg Jewish community members have always had several options to choose from when it comes to deciding where to attend High Holiday services.

Those options have included local ultra-orthodox, orthodox, conservative and reform synagogues — many of which have shut down, moved or merged over the decades — as well as a variety of other alternatives that have been offered on and off at summer camps, nursing homes, private homes, hotels and rented spaces throughout the city.

When the 2026 High Holidays begin with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year at sunset on Friday, Sept. 11, there will be one more option for community members to consider.

That option is a new service being hosted on the second morning of the holiday, Sept. 13, by Ahava Rabba, a fledgling grassroots congregation that began meeting almost a year ago and is coming together for the Jewish New Year for the first time ever. Ahava Rabba, which translates from the Hebrew as Abundant Love, takes its name from the blessing that observant Ashkenazi Jews recite every morning just before the Sh’ma, Judaism’s central declaration of faith.

Bridging gaps, helping ease the strain

Melissa Martin 6 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

This is not a column about my minor medical woes, but it does begin with one.

In the summer of 2022, I noticed a small lump growing in the middle of my arm. It was the size of a large pea, and hard and uncomfortable to the touch. Thankfully, my general practitioner had good news: the growth was quite benign, just unsightly. He froze it off with liquid nitrogen; it left a small, flat scar.

But three years later, the growth had come back. Early this year, I arranged a referral to a dermatologist for that lump and another concern; I was booked in for six months later. I tacked the appointment letter on my fridge, and checked it almost every day.

Many Canadians are all too familiar with the fear of forgetting a specialist appointment still half-a-year or more away.

Downtown outage caused by construction mishap: Bell MTS

Zoe Pierce 3 minute read Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026

Some customers in downtown Winnipeg are experiencing a Bell MTS service interruption after telecommunications infrastructure was damaged Tuesday.

Bell MTS said on social media that a third-party construction crew accidentally cut a copper cable, causing the outage.

Contractors drilled through multiple underground ducts, causing significant damage to several cables and requiring extensive repairs.

A small number of buildings, mainly concentrated on Fort Street, Garry Street and York Avenue, may be experiencing landline or internet issues because of the damage, said Bell spokesperson Elise von Scheel.

Bishnoi Gang active in Manitoba

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Monday, Jul. 20, 2026

The Bishnoi Gang, which is run by a convicted gangster from his prison cell in India, appears to have gained a foothold in Manitoba.

A civil forfeiture lawsuit filed in the Court of King’s Bench this month has revealed a 36-year-old man, who was arrested this year, had claimed he is a member of the Bishnoi Gang when he tried to extort cash from a Winnipeg resident.

Arshdeep Singh Brar was arrested by Winnipeg Police Service officers in Headingley on March 3 and charged with extortion and two firearms offences, says the claim.

The victim, identified in the court documents as a man of South Asian descent, had gone to police.
