Jeff Browaty to remain councillor in North Kildonan

Long-standing incumbent Jeff Browaty will remain councillor of the North Kildonan ward, earning 73 per cent support.

Andrew Podolecki, Browaty’s lone challenger, was running against the councillor for the third time in the north Winnipeg ward. He finished the race a distant second with 27 per cent support, a five per cent increase from 2018's election.

Browaty has already served 16 years on council, filling roles on numerous committees, including sitting in the mayor's inner circle as a member of the executive policy committee. He is currently council’s finance chairman.

Browaty counts road maintenance as a top priority and has spoken out against imposing large tax increases. He suggests the city refocus its priorities on key municipal responsibilities; ideas he’s floated include not expanding recreational services and not spending city money on items that fall primarily under provincial jurisdiction, such as housing.

Dobson returns to council with St. James win

It was anyone’s game in St. James, but Shawn Dobson won out in the end.

Dobson, who previously represented the former St. Charles ward on city council from 2014-18 (which was then dissolved and merged into St. James and Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood), was in competition with four other candidates in the 2022 municipal election. The ward had no incumbent, with two-term councillor Scott Gillingham making the jump into the Winnipeg mayoral race.

“I’m good. Actually, I’m ecstatic,” Dobson said, as reporters arrived at his election party Wednesday night — held at his mother’s house, where he grew up — moments after he learned he’d won.

Wearing a suit and surrounded by a small group of supporters, who passed around mimosas, Dobson said he was ready to hit the ground running as a second-time Winnipeg councillor.

Wyatt reclaims Transcona seat

Transcona welcomed back its former councillor with open arms on election night, with Russ Wyatt retaking the city hall seat he held for 16 years from incumbent Shawn Nason.

According to City of Winnipeg website numbers, Wyatt ended the night with just over 46 per cent of the vote, with Nason (who held the seat from 2018-22) collecting just under 39 per cent. Steve Lipischak and Wally Welechenko were a distant third and fourth, respectively.

Wyatt’s entrance at Transcona restaurant Dal’s, where supporters had gathered Wednesday night to watch the vote result come in, was met with raucous cheers. He started his victory speech by asking that the crowd sing Happy Birthday to the 13-year-old son of a supporter, complete with a cake and candles.

His thank-you speech, surrounded by family and friends, was an emotional one.

Duncan claims Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood

The second time was the charm for Evan Duncan, Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood’s new city councillor.

“We got it done,” Duncan, 39, told reporters, beaming in a Boston Pizza lounge minutes after being elected Wednesday night.

Around 60 people had come to support the Manitoba Justice employee. He had been in a tight race for the ward seat with four other candidates, following the move by councillor Kevin Klein to step down and run for mayor.

Duncan garnered around 9,500 votes, beating well-known radio broadcaster Hal Anderson by more than 2,000. Brad Gross, Steven Minion and Gordon Penner had also put their names in the ring.

Orlikow secures River Heights – Fort Garry

Long-standing incumbent John Orlikow is returning to city hall to represent River Heights - Fort Garry, winning the ward in Wednesday night's election with 73 per cent support.

His closest challenger, Brant Field, earned 20 per cent of the ward's support, with Gary Lenko trailing at seven per cent.

This will be Orlikow's fourth term on council.

First elected in a 2009 byelection, Orlikow has seen numerous postings on city council, including as deputy mayor, a member of the executive policy committee and chairman of the property and development, and heritage and downtown development committees.
