Sweet, soft and simple. Today’s Homemade Holidays feature is a sentimental sugar cookie recipe from Anne Thoroughgood, who inherited these sweet treats from her mother via her grandma. This recipe previously appeared in the Teulon United Church Circle Cookbook circa 1953.
“We make cookies from this recipe for Christmas and Valentines. It is a fun family day each year,” writes Anne.
“Even COVID-19 did not stop us as my daughter distributed balls of dough to each family and we made cookies in our own kitchens and visited over FaceTime.”

Sugar Cookies
Recipe submitted by Anne Thoroughgood
Ingredients
500 ml (2 cups) margarine or butter
500 ml (2 cups) white sugar, plus more for garnish
4 eggs
10 ml (2 tsp) baking soda
20 ml (4 tsp) cream of tartar
1,250 ml (5 cups) flour
Directions
Cream butter or margarine in a large bowl and gradually beat in white sugar.
Beat eggs with vanilla and stir into the sugar mixture.
Sift together dry ingredients and fold into the wet mixture. Refrigerate dough overnight.
Preheat oven to 175 C (350 F).
On a floured surface, roll out to about 1/8-inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Note: this dough softens quickly at room temperature. Roll out in batches and keep dough in the fridge until ready to use.
Place cookies on a parchment-lined sheet pan and sprinkle with white sugar.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in preheated oven until light brown. Transfer to a rack to cool.
