MOON ALERT: Caution. Avoid shopping (except food and gas) or making important decisions from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Libra into Scorpio.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a fun-loving, playful day. Enjoy shmoozing with everyone. Sports and fun times with kids will appeal. Be prepared to co-operate with others because you might have to go more than halfway when dealing with spouses, partners and close friends. Romantic vibes are strong.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Discussions with an older family member might take place. The concern could be about practical repairs. If so, wait until the moon alert is over to commit to anything. A work-related romance or flirtation might begin. This is a flirtatious day.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a great day for a short trip or a drive. You’ll enjoy talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours. You’ll also enjoy doing your homework to make plans for the future. (Wait until the moon alert is over to commit to anything.) It’s also the perfect day for a date or a romantic get-together.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You’ll enjoy entertaining at home. In fact, it’s the perfect day (or evening) for a romantic date. You might invite someone over. You might also have a practical, serious discussion about money or finances. If so, wait until the moon alert is over to agree to anything.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You feel friendly and sociable. In the morning, things are a bit laid-back, but as the day wears on, your energy will pick up. Enjoy shmoozing with others. Discussions about legal or medical matters might be practical and serious — ditto for travel — but wait until the moon alert is over to act.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’ll enjoy some privacy, especially because you might be involved in discussions about inheritances, taxes, debt and shared property. You might want to figure out how to divide something. If so, be aware that things will probably go your way; but be smart and wait until the moon alert is over.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day. The first thing to know is there’s a moon alert for most of this day. Nevertheless, it’s a favourable time for discussions and making plans — but not agreeing to anything. Do your homework. It’s a marvellous day to socialize and explore romantic opportunities.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

People will listen to you because you have some sensible ideas you want to share, especially related to your job, health or even a pet. Secret love affairs are taking place for some because romantic vibes are hot. Check moon alert.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Enjoy the company of friends, especially creative people. You might discuss travel opportunities or issues related to the law, medicine, publishing and higher education. A friendship could turn romantic. Be aware of the moon alert.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You make a great impression on others. Because others see you as warmhearted, generous and attractive — explore romantic opportunities. Practical discussions about finances and shared property might occur — check the moon alert.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a friendly, sociable day. Enjoy shmoozing with others, especially people from different cultures. Travel will appeal. Someone older or wiser might have advice for you. Romance is percolating.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Discussions about how to share or divide something will favour you. However, don’t agree to anything important during the moon alert. This is a friendly, romantic day full of fun possibilities. Enjoy yourself.

Best to fess up about grandkid-sitting fatigue

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: We love our grandchildren, but now we’re sick of them. The two sets of parents — our adult children — have been parking their kids out here on the farm with us while they take back-to-back road trips to see their friends. We’ve had enough.

Grandma and I want them to come back and get the “brats” (just joking, they’re nice kids) so we can relax.

You have to be so careful with city kids around the farm who don’t know when they’re going to make a mistake and get hoofed by an animal or run over by a farm implement.

How do we tell our kids the party is over early, and they really need to come back before grandma and I give out?

Where paths cross

Carina Blumgrund 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Every so often, an ordinary moment turns out to be about something else entirely.

I watched two women meet outside a grocery store recently. Neither seemed to know the other. One had dropped a bag, oranges rolling across the wet pavement, and the other bent down without a word to help gather them. It took maybe 40 seconds. They exchanged a few sentences I couldn’t hear, laughed once, and went their separate ways. I don’t think either of them thought about it again.

I did, though. I kept thinking about how neither woman had planned to meet the other that morning. Their separate mornings happened to touch for less than a minute, and then continued on, changed by some small amount neither could probably name.

For a long time, when I thought about what brings people together, bridges were the image that came to mind. Bridges connect two known sides. They’re built on purpose, toward a destination already identified. I still believe in that kind of work. Deliberate bridges, built with intention toward a place meant to be reached, matter enormously.

Cruise control: city mulls move to curb street noise levels

Ben Waldman 4 minute read Friday, Jan. 17, 2020

Sunday cruise nights on Portage Avenue are a Winnipeg tradition, but cavalcades of convertibles and muscle cars rolling down the street can come with a noisy byproduct.

Next week, the city's executive policy committee will discuss some changes — including noise cameras that capture licence plate data of particularly loud vehicles — aimed at keeping the volume down.

The recommendation, which would require provincial approval, comes on the heels of complaints from area residents about the Sunday night noise levels, says Coun. Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre).

"Most residents don't mind the cruise nights themselves," she said Thursday. "It's the revving and the screeching" and the modified mufflers.

Aide: Trump dismissed Jan. 6 threats, wanted to join crowd

Mary Clare Jalonick, Farnoush Amiri, Eric Tucker And Michael Balsamo, The Associated Press 8 minute read Wednesday, Jun. 29, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump rebuffed his own security’s warnings about armed protesters in the Jan. 6 rally crowd and made desperate attempts to join his supporters as they marched to the Capitol, according to dramatic new testimony before the House committee investigating the 2021 insurrection.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a little-known former White House aide, described an angry, defiant president who was trying that day to let armed protesters avoid security screenings at a rally that morning to protest his 2020 election defeat and who later grabbed at the steering wheel of the presidential SUV when the Secret Service refused to let him go to the Capitol.

And when the events at the Capitol spiraled toward violence, with the crowd chanting to “Hang Mike Pence,” she testified Tuesday that Trump declined to intervene.

Trump “doesn’t think they’re doing anything wrong,” Hutchinson recalled hearing from her boss, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Former MLA Kevin Chief opens up about his 18 years of sobriety

Katie May 14 minute read Saturday, May. 30, 2020

Every day starts and ends with a prayer.

In the morning, Kevin Chief asks for the strength and courage to stay sober. At night, he thanks the Creator for another day of sobriety. It’s been 18 years since his last drink. Staying sober is still the most important thing to him.

“You’d have to be pretty close to me to know. And there are people today who know me very well that don’t know,” the 45-year-old father of three says.

“I never meant it to be like that. The anonymity was important to me because I honestly thought I wouldn’t make it, and I thought it’d be embarrassing when I slipped again. So I thought it was better for me to not let people know. And then my sponsor told me, ‘Look, you’ll know when the time’s right. You don’t need to force it.’”
