ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a fun-loving, playful day. Enjoy shmoozing with everyone. Sports and fun times with kids will appeal. Be prepared to co-operate with others because you might have to go more than halfway when dealing with spouses, partners and close friends. Romantic vibes are strong.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Discussions with an older family member might take place. The concern could be about practical repairs. If so, wait until the moon alert is over to commit to anything. A work-related romance or flirtation might begin. This is a flirtatious day.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a great day for a short trip or a drive. You’ll enjoy talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours. You’ll also enjoy doing your homework to make plans for the future. (Wait until the moon alert is over to commit to anything.) It’s also the perfect day for a date or a romantic get-together.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You’ll enjoy entertaining at home. In fact, it’s the perfect day (or evening) for a romantic date. You might invite someone over. You might also have a practical, serious discussion about money or finances. If so, wait until the moon alert is over to agree to anything.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You feel friendly and sociable. In the morning, things are a bit laid-back, but as the day wears on, your energy will pick up. Enjoy shmoozing with others. Discussions about legal or medical matters might be practical and serious — ditto for travel — but wait until the moon alert is over to act.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’ll enjoy some privacy, especially because you might be involved in discussions about inheritances, taxes, debt and shared property. You might want to figure out how to divide something. If so, be aware that things will probably go your way; but be smart and wait until the moon alert is over.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day. The first thing to know is there’s a moon alert for most of this day. Nevertheless, it’s a favourable time for discussions and making plans — but not agreeing to anything. Do your homework. It’s a marvellous day to socialize and explore romantic opportunities.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

People will listen to you because you have some sensible ideas you want to share, especially related to your job, health or even a pet. Secret love affairs are taking place for some because romantic vibes are hot. Check moon alert.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Enjoy the company of friends, especially creative people. You might discuss travel opportunities or issues related to the law, medicine, publishing and higher education. A friendship could turn romantic. Be aware of the moon alert.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You make a great impression on others. Because others see you as warmhearted, generous and attractive — explore romantic opportunities. Practical discussions about finances and shared property might occur — check the moon alert.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a friendly, sociable day. Enjoy shmoozing with others, especially people from different cultures. Travel will appeal. Someone older or wiser might have advice for you. Romance is percolating.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Discussions about how to share or divide something will favour you. However, don’t agree to anything important during the moon alert. This is a friendly, romantic day full of fun possibilities. Enjoy yourself.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Late actress Helen McCrory (1968-2021) shared your birthday. You’re persuasive, confident, flamboyant and generous. You’re also strong-willed with firm convictions. The spotlight is on you.

Opera group hits pub to stage shows for sophisticated palates

Opera’s famous drinking songs — La Traviata’s Brindisi, Don Giovanni’s Fin ch’han dal vino, Carmen’s Votre Toast — tend to flow with references to women and wine, not beer.

But that hasn’t stopped Winnipeggers from sipping 1919s or Generics at local bar and brewery Little Brown Jug over the past few years to the strains of Verdi, Puccini and Mozart.

Currently in its eighth season, Opera by the Pint has its next LBJ event Wednesday at 7 p.m. (The artists also perform at the Public Brewhouse and Gallery in Steinbach at 7 p.m. on Thursday.)

This week’s program focuses on musical hits, while also featuring traditional Filipino ballads and Mexican art songs.

WRHA directs three care homes to accommodate surge of hospital patients

Malak Abas 5 minute read Friday, Aug. 14, 2026

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has directed three long-term care centres to make space for hospital patients, citing “exceptionally high demand for care across the health-care system.”

“Riverview Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre and Misericordia Health Centre have been asked to identify additional temporary capacity for patients who no longer require an acute-care hospital bed but continue to need an appropriate level of care before they can transition to their next care setting,” a WRHA spokesperson told the Free Press Thursday.

“This whole-of-system response will help create additional capacity in acute-care hospitals, supporting patient flow and timely access to emergency departments and other hospital services.”

The spokesperson described the measures as part of “standard surge protocol,” atypical and temporary, but did not provide a timeline of how long patients would be staying at the health-care centres.

Best to fess up about grandkid-sitting fatigue

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: We love our grandchildren, but now we’re sick of them. The two sets of parents — our adult children — have been parking their kids out here on the farm with us while they take back-to-back road trips to see their friends. We’ve had enough.

Grandma and I want them to come back and get the “brats” (just joking, they’re nice kids) so we can relax.

You have to be so careful with city kids around the farm who don’t know when they’re going to make a mistake and get hoofed by an animal or run over by a farm implement.

How do we tell our kids the party is over early, and they really need to come back before grandma and I give out?

‘You are the father!’ Maury Povich declares to Denver Zoo orangutan

Amy Beth Hanson, The Associated Press 3 minute read Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023

Initially unsure of which orangutan was the father of a new baby primate, the Denver Zoo decided to have a little fun and turned to the paternity announcement guru himself: former daytime talk show host Maury Povich.

Just as he would do on his long-running show, Povich pulled the purported DNA results for 4-month-old Siska out of an envelope and declared: "Berani. You are the father!”

The zoo posted the video on social media this week.

Siska, a female who was born on Aug. 27, is the first baby for Eirina, a 15-year-old Sumatran orangutan, who came to the Denver Zoo from Germany’s Dortmund Zoo in 2016.

‘You vote with your bike’: cyclists celebrate freedoms, call for increased safety

Maggie Macintosh 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 4:20 PM CDT

Patty Wiens got dressed up in her sparkly, hot pink cowboy boots to pedal and talk politics with more than 100 other people on Sunday.

The founder of Winnipeg’s Fancy Women Bike Ride called on attendees of the 2026 event to ask candidates in the upcoming civic election — a half-dozen of whom were in attendance — about their active transportation platforms.

“We’re here today, in an election year, to remind you that you vote with your bike,” Wiens told a crowd of nearly 120 cyclists gathered on the legislature grounds for the group ride.

“When (city council) candidates come to your door and ask what’s important to you, you’re going to say, ‘I want to ride my bike safely in the city. What are you going to do about it?’”
