MOON ALERT: After 10 a.m. today there are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Libra.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The moon is opposite your sign, which means you have to go more than halfway when dealing with others. Be accommodating and gracious because conversations might be testy and confrontational as well as confusing. Tread carefully!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Despite family discussions, home repairs and a strong emphasis on your domestic world (including parents), you’re focused on your work, health and perhaps a pet. Unfortunately, there seems to be some kind of confusion that can trigger tension. Patience is your best friend.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a dicey day for romance, fun socializing, sports and playful activities with kids, because confused communications are likely. Plus, you might not have the energy to follow through on your plans. Furthermore, disputes about money and possessions might arise. Go gently.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Family disputes, especially with female relatives, are likely. Unfortunately, miscommunication and false expectations might contribute to this. Assume nothing. Don’t be pushy; and yet, don’t give up. Keep in mind that many people do not grasp how sensitive your feelings are. (It is what it is, and you have to live with it.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is the classic day for tension in communications with your everyday contacts — siblings, relatives and neighbours. This could be due to confusion. Misdirection. Misunderstandings. Possibly deceit. Be aware that someone behind the scenes might be working against your best interests. (Yikes!)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Be careful spending money and with any financial wheeling and dealing, because you might not have all the facts, or you might be confused or misled. Therefore, double-check everything. Avoid misunderstandings with friends and groups. (You don’t need this.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day. In one way, you have the advantage, because the moon is in your sign. However, fiery Mars and Neptune are at odds with the moon creating conflict with authority figures and confused communication with partners and close friends. Yes, a tricky day.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Steer clear of controversial subjects like politics, religion and racial issues, because there’s too much confusion and misunderstanding. Fuzzy Neptune is in the picture, which is like Vaseline on your lens. You’re not seeing clearly. Meanwhile, Mars can create irritability.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You might want to enjoy time with a friend or a group. You might even spitball some ideas you have about your future goals? Be aware that friction with someone over shared property, joint costs or romantic confusion are impossible to avoid.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a poor day to ask for permission or approval from an authority figure, because the answer will probably be, “Talk to the hand.” Meanwhile, be aware you are high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. Guard against a public argument with a spouse or friend.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Communications are confused, which is why this is a poor day for important discussions on controversial subjects. Political arguments are classic examples, especially if they relate to your work. Health-related issues might also be confusing. Step carefully.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might be involved in social outings including sporting events, fun activities with kids or romantic dates. If so, be patient, because misunderstandings and confused communications are par for the course. These are relatively minor influences. Don’t let them ruin a meaningful relationship. Be patient. Be tolerant.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, director Ben Affleck (1972) shares your birthday. You’re tenacious, inspirational and influential. You formulate farsighted strategies with logic and practical organizational skills. This is a year of service for you, perhaps to family. Take care of yourself so you can be a resource for those who turn to you for guidance, comfort and courage.

Options for selling U.S. alcohol in Canada

Charles S. Shaver 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

“Don’t buy it. Let it sit on the shelves.” — Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew

U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to impose tariffs of 50 per cent by Aug. 19 on over 500 Canadian items worth $28 billion. This would threaten 56,000 Canadian jobs and five per cent of our exports.

These tariffs were justified by Sec. 338 of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Unfortunately, Trump forgets that President Herbert Hoover signed it despite the objection of over 1,200 economists. A trade war escalated so that U.S. exports and imports both fell by two-thirds. This exacerbated the Great Depression.

A major cause for Trump’s new tariffs is supposedly the irritant that most Canadian provinces no longer sell U.S. alcohol.

Donating plasma for good reasons

Bob Cox 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

It was the baby’s picture that got to me. Featured in an ad seeking plasma donors, I looked at the infant and the accompanying message that I could help save lives. A few days later I was at the donation centre on the University of Manitoba campus.

That was 15 years ago. Almost weekly since then, I have returned to sit for an hour or so while blood is pumped out of me, plasma is extracted, and then the blood is pumped back in.

Grifols, the Spanish company that operates the U of M clinic as well as donation centres across Canada, paused collections on Aug. 14 as it deals with questions surrounding the deaths of two people following donations at Winnipeg locations.

Health Canada said the deaths were not linked to plasma donations, but raised concerns about alarm monitoring and other procedures and issued a non-compliance order for a clinic on Taylor Avenue.

A spectral spin on the culinary reality show

Eva Wasney 5 minute read Tuesday, May. 23, 2023

The elevator pitch: local ghost-kitchen purveyors convene in a haunted house to have their cooking judged by a hungry spectre.

Oh, and there are also paranormal experts, familiar monsters and just a hint of bike theft.

It’s a deeply weird, multidimensional concept that a Winnipeg film production company has turned into a very real television series available now on Bell FibeTV.

Ghost Kitchens is a four-part reality cooking competition/supernatural history show created by Folks Films, a studio founded by siblings Laina and Taylor Brown. Pushing the bounds of possibility was a driving force behind the pair’s first foray into entertainment TV.

Attached home by A & S blends style with function

Todd Lewys 5 minute read Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026

As attractive as the exterior designs of most two-storey attached homes are, would-be buyers often cringe inwardly when they think about what awaits inside.

Many two-storey attached designs that fall in the 1,300 to 1,400 square feet range can have a long, narrow feel to their interiors.

That’s totally understandable, as most two-storey attached homes are built on lots with a width of under 30 feet.

A & S Homes’ new, two-storey attached show home at 273 Moonlight Bay isn’t one of those, says Rob Hutchison of RE/MAX Performance Realty.
