Thieves target Elmwood Giants

Joshua Frey-Sam 2 minute read Tuesday, May. 30, 2023

The Elmwood Giants gave up some steals before the 2023 Manitoba Junior Baseball League season had begun.

The perennial league champions fell victim to thieves in the spring, losing costly ballpark equipment and tools in a couple of break-ins at Koskie Field on Chalmers Avenue.

The Giants, however, keep battling, on and off the field.

“We’re actually surviving pretty good,” said manager Ed Kulyk, whose squad is off to a 3-3 start. The Giants have captured six consecutive MJBL crowns.

Ramirez conquers Canaries

Donald Stewart 3 minute read Monday, May. 29, 2023

Holding a one-run lead at the top of the ninth inning and with two men on and only one out, the unshakable Luis Ramirez did what he’d done all game and fanned the next two batters to preserve a Winnipeg Goldeyes victory Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg wrapped up its first homestand of the season in style with a 3-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries on a warm and sunny afternoon in downtown Winnipeg.

The Goldeyes are now 8-7 early in the American Association pro ball season, while the Canaries dropped to 6-10. The local squad went 6-3 in its first prolonged stint at Shaw Park.

The Fish wore Reston Rockets jerseys in honour of the 2009-13 team that was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Saturday night.

The stage was set for another Winnipeg Goldeyes’ dramatic comeback — but the pro squad fell just short Thursday in a rare morning start at Shaw Park.

The Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kane County Cougars to close out a three-game American Association series. Winnipeg is 6-6 early in the 2023 campaign and tied for third place in the West Division.

The Goldeyes were in a familiar position, down 3-1 after just two innings. They have trailed by two or more runs in each of their last two games against the Cougars but eventually prevailed on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

The late-game magic didn’t materialize in front of a boisterous daytime crowd as the hosts went scoreless through the final five innings.

The clock struck 9:30 p.m. as Javeyan Williams — who had brought the crowd to its collective feet on two occasions earlier in the evening — slid across home plate while those in attendance at Shaw Park erupted in celebration for the second night in row.

It was a wild pitch in the 10th inning that scored the Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder to give the club a 5-4 victory over the Kane County Cougars and stamp its second consecutive series victory on the young 2023 campaign in front of 2,063 fans at the downtown park.

The Fish improved to 6-5 in their 30th-anniversary season while the Cougars suffered their seventh-straight defeat to drop to 2-9.

It’s the second night in a row the Goldeyes beat the Cougars in extra innings after a 3-2 triumph Tuesday.

Travis Seabrooke certainly enjoyed this home opener a lot more than the last one. His team did, too.

The 27-year-old Ontario product tossed five strong innings on Friday night as his Winnipeg Goldeyes routed the Lake Country DockHounds 10-4 at Shaw Park. Seabrooke picked up the win, scattering six hits and giving up one earned run, with five strikeouts and a walk.

It was a different story a year ago as the Goldeyes kicked off the 2022 campaign against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on a cold, blustery and downright miserable night. Seabrooke came on in relief in the eighth inning and was tagged with the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run.

The conditions were a lot better for this one, with a sunny sky, warm temperature and a crowd of 5,736 on hand to soak it all in. Winnipeg improves to 3-4 on the year after playing the first half-dozen on the road. Lake Country falls to 1-5.

Goldeyes start Tagert era with a bang

Joshua Frey-Sam 2 minute read Thursday, May. 11, 2023

The Winnipeg Goldeyes began their 30th season — and the Greg Tagert era — in convincing fashion, downing the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-1 in Indiana on Thursday.

It was a fitting setting for the club to start the 2023 campaign, as new skipper Tagert made his return to the Steel Yard, where he spent 16 seasons managing the RailCats from 2005-2021.

Team ace Luis Ramirez toed the rubber to begin his second season with the Goldeyes and staged an outstanding debut, allowing just two hits from the 22 batters he faced and striking out three across six innings of work.

The bats, meanwhile, wasted no time getting on the board. Four batters after third basemen Dayson Croes singled in the opening at-bat of the season, left fielder Andrew Shaps drove him in on a single to register the first run of the campaign.

Sam Katz admits the idea was straight out of left field, with plenty of naysayers telling him there’s no chance professional baseball would last around here.

In those early days, when his Winnipeg Goldeyes began to swim upstream in 1994 playing out of a makeshift park inside a cavernous football stadium, with some players bunking in his basement owing to a lack of billets and to keep costs down, Katz himself had doubts.

“They say you’re crazy. That it’s never going to work,” Katz told the Free Press this week in a wide-ranging chat. “I might have agreed with that. We somehow overcame it. And now, 30 years later, I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Not only did they survive, they have thrived, becoming one of the most successful independent baseball franchises in North America with their own little field of dreams down at the Forks.

Senga can opt out of Mets deal if 400 IP in next 3 years

Ronald Blum, The Associated Press 2 minute read Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022

NEW YORK (AP) — Pitcher Kodai Senga can opt out of his contract with the New York Mets after the 2025 season if he totals at least 400 innings in the next three seasons.

Senga, who is to be introduced at a Citi Field news conference on Monday, gets a $5 million signing bonus as part of a $75 million, five-year contract. He receives salaries of $14 million annually from 2023-27 and can opt out of the deal after the 2025 season if he pitches a total of 400 innings from 2023-25.

There is a $15 million conditional team option for 2028 that the Mets could exercise if Senga does not opt out and has Tommy John surgery or a right elbow injury that causes him to go on the injured list for more than 130 consecutive days.

His salaries through 2027 would escalate by $2 million for each Cy Young Award won and by $1 million for finishing second through fifth in the voting. The escalators would apply to the 2028 option only if the conditions for the option are met.
