Goldeyes match record with 11th consecutive win

The Winnipeg Goldeyes needed three innings to cement a victory over the Chicago Dogs on Wednesday night.

The Fish, who ended the evening with 17 hits, drove in 10 runs in the third frame in a 14-5 beatdown over the visitors from the Windy City.

“We really capitalised this time,” said centre fielder Noah Marcelo “We faced a couple of pitchers (in the third), and I was in the locker room and I was almost up again — I was changing my pants because I ripped my pants. But we’re just rolling right now.

“This was a special game, for sure.”

The Goldeyes extended their winning streak to 11 games, which ties a franchise record set in 2014.

“We’ve kind of just hit our stride now. Pitching is clicking, hitting is clicking, and the camaraderie is just great,” added Marcelo.

The Goldeyes improved to 38-31 which has them 2.5 games back of the Kansas City Monarchs (41-29) for top spot in the American Association’s West Division.

The Dogs dropped to 21-49 which is the worst record in the league.

Starting pitcher Kevin Vaupel (3-5) earned the win, giving up two earned runs on five hits across six innings of work. Left-fielder Jiandido Tromp led the charge on offence with four RBI, while Marcelo and first baseman Roby Enriquez had three RBI each.

Chicago starter Dominic Guzman (0-3) was handed the loss, giving up six earned runs on five hits in two innings.

Winnipeg will attempt to sweep the four-game series tonight when the sides meet again at 6:30 p.m.
