After upgrading the windows on the original portion of my house last fall, the prospect of incurring another major expense in the short term had me slightly concerned.

The shingles were replaced in 2005, which means they have entered the final third of their 30-year life expectancy, based on the IKO Cambridge product that was installed. I could only imagine what it would cost now to replace them, let alone in another 10 years.

To alleviate some of my worry, I began researching shingle maintenance and revitalization products.

The gutters are cleared of any asphalt granules so that we can monitor the shingles’ condition over the years following the Gonano application process.

To my delight, I stumbled across a company called Roof Revive on social media, which offers those things. I asked for an onsite visit to discuss the process, and that’s when I met Kevin Kelner, who had nothing but good things to say about the product.

“GoNano is an advanced nanotechnology treatment designed to restore, protect and extend the life of asphalt shingles,” Kelner says.

“The product is engineered at the molecular level, (with) nano silica penetrating deep into the shingles, not just coating it. The result is enhanced durability, weather resistance and long-lasting protection, all-the-while eco-friendly and cost-effective.”

I had heard of this technology in the past while researching products that protect a vehicle’s paint finish. It had not occurred to me that nanotechnology was being used in products that can protect your roof.

Of course, it makes a lot of sense. From what I understand about the technology used to restore and protect shingles, there are three different products based on the age of the roof.

As Kelner explains it, “The first product, Shingle Saver, is applied to brand new to five-year-old shingles — the GoNano warranty protects the shingles and prevents deterioration, extending the life of the shingles for 15 years on top of the expected shingle life. The second product, Roof Revive, is designed for 10- to 14-year-old shingles, and will protect and prevent deterioration of the shingles for an additional 10 years beyond the expected shingle life — (with) a GoNano pro-rated warranty for the 10 years from application date.

“The third and last product, Bio Boost, is used for shingles that are not yet curling, but have lost a considerable amount of asphalt granules, extending the life for only three to five years, allowing a homeowner to save up to replace the shingles with new ones. No warranty is offered with this application.”

I assumed my shingles would fall into the latter category. The shingles can’t be curling along the edges; there should be no bare spots or lost shingles; and they are likely past the halfway point of the expected lifespan.

But when he assessed my roof, Kelner couldn’t believe the excellent condition of the shingles, despite 20 years of being subjected to extreme weather on the open plains. Roof Revive was suggested, and the process was scheduled for the following week, during a hot and dry spell.

The entire roof was treated with the product using a battery-operated sprayer, with a retractable 100-foot hose and spray wand. Kelner systematically coated the roofing, ensuring that every shingle was treated. Furthermore, the eavestroughs were blown clean in order to showcase the nominal loss of asphalt granules over the next few years due to the GoNano treatment, a big reason why the application extends the life of shingles.

“This technology was developed with the environment in mind,” Kelner says, “by minimizing the volume of asphalt shingles that end up in landfills, as well as helping save homeowners’ hard-earned money.”

From my perspective, the prospect of extending the life of my roof by another 10 or so years was too good to pass up. The GoNano technology not only coats and seals the shingles’ surface, it also softens older shingles, making them less likely to lift and break in high winds.

Roof Revive is an investment that will pay for itself in no time. And although a full roof replacement may be inevitable at some point, the Roof Revive process promises to greatly extend the life of my shingles, giving me some sorely needed peace of mind.
