New strip mall coming to North Kildonan
Construction on a new shopping centre in North Kildonan is scheduled to be completed next month.
The 16,000-square-foot strip mall is located at the corner of McLeod Avenue and Brunswick Street. Tenants will include a dental clinic, grocery store and pizza shop.
Father and son realtors Apee and Bunty Panchhi are developing the mall on three pieces of Winnipeg land they acquired over the last 13 years. Construction began in November. The land was previously occupied by a picture frame shop and a house.
More than 60 per cent of the mall’s space is already leased, Apee Panchhi said.
Jersey Mike’s Subs to launch in Steinbach
A multinational sandwich chain based in New Jersey is readying its first Manitoba location. Steinbach is among the Canadian cities where Jersey Mike’s Subs is setting up shop. The company will open a restaurant at 17 Market Blvd. in the city located 65 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
Jersey Mike’s shared the news on Facebook at the beginning of June. The company did not provide an opening date. A sign in the Steinbach restaurant’s window reads, “Coming soon!”
Jersey Mike’s and Redberry Restaurants, the franchisee firm that is bringing the chain to Canada, did not respond to interview requests on Monday.
The first Jersey Mike’s eatery opened in the New Jersey borough of Point Pleasant in 1956, under the name Mike’s Giant Submarine Shop.
The chain now has more than 3,300 locations around the world, including 26 in Canada, according to its Canadian website. The site lists 12 cities in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario where restaurants are “scheduled to open soon.”
The Canadian Press reported in February 2025 that Jersey Mike’s plans to open 300 Canadian restaurants by 2034. It’s expanding in the country at a time when two other U.S. chains, Jimmy John’s and Shake Shack, are also opening eateries in Canada.
