Figure skating coach Callaghan banned by SafeSport

The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019

Richard Callaghan, who coached Tara Lipinski to Olympic gold, has been banned from figure skating by the U.S. Center for SafeSport for sexual misconduct.

Callaghan, who also coached six-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge, was ruled "permanently ineligible" on Wednesday for actions involving a minor. Callaghan was accused by a former student, Adam Schmidt, in a lawsuit. Schmidt alleged that Callaghan sexually abused him from 1999-2001. Schmidt was 14 in 1999.

Also in 1999, Callaghan was investigated for sexual misconduct involving another coach, Craig Maurizi, but U.S. Figure Skating dismissed those charges. Maurizi said the incidents began in 1976 when he was 13, and continued for years.

Now 73, Callaghan was suspended in March 2018 by SafeSport and by the federation. He sued SafeSport, but the lawsuit was dismissed.

Nicole Buffie 4 minute read 6:24 PM CDT

A transgender military member has been fined in a case where she was Tasered while fighting to have her gender identity changed on her file.

Royal Canadian Air Force Sgt. Athena Morris was fined $2,000 for unlawfully entering a restricted area at 17 Wing Winnipeg on March 31, 2025, when she demanded the gender marker on her file be changed. Morris, a transgender woman, said she had been trying to get her gender identifier changed since January of that year.

The incident was a culmination of “months of friction,” defence counsel Maj. Carlos Da Cruz told military judge Stephen Strickey Monday during a hearing at HMCS Chippawa, a Royal Canadian Navy Reserve division in Winnipeg.

Da Cruz told court Morris was misgendered by colleagues and superiors and told she wasn’t allowed to use the women’s bathrooms or showers.

City, province, Ottawa strike task force to battle meth

Jessica Botelho-Urbanski 5 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018

The city, province and federal governments are teaming up to create a tri-level task force that will fight distribution of illicit drugs and address the root causes of the province's meth crisis.

"As far as we know, this is the first collaborative initiative like this in the country and it’s something that I’m very proud to be a part of," said Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman, who had been calling for such a task force (with unanimous council support) since September.

In interviews last week, officials from the three levels of government told the Free Press they hadn't yet met in the same room to discuss the surge in meth-related problems.

By Tuesday, it seems they managed to clear their schedules.

No need to follow sister’s lead on nuptial drama

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My older sister has just walked down the aisle as a bride for a third time in Las Vegas. (This makes it one wedding in Manitoba and two in Sin City.) She’s 41 years old now. I refused to fly down there to be her bridesmaid.

I told her to just get me a copy of the video and I would add it to my collection. And she wonders why I have never gotten married?

She’s made a joke of the marriage institution with her $5,000 white wedding in Canada, and her divorce. Let’s not forget the two little Vegas weddings in full over-the-top white dresses.

So how did she have the gall to turn around this week and get after me to marry the guy I’ve been living with for five years, when her weddings are nothing more than costume shows? I said, “What does marriage mean to a woman like you? Your husbands don’t last — you’ve proved that.”

Alex Jones concedes Sandy Hook attack was ‘100% real’

Jim Vertuno, The Associated Press 6 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — For years, bombastic far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ranted to his millions of followers that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax, that children weren’t killed and that parents were crisis actors in an elaborate ruse to force gun control.

Under oath and facing a jury that could hit him with $150 million or more in damages for his false claims, Jones said Wednesday he now realizes that was irresponsible and believes that what happened in the deadliest school shooting in American history was “100% real.”

Jones’ public contrition came on the final day of testimony in a two-week defamation lawsuit against him and his Austin-based media company, Free Speech Systems, brought by Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, the parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis. Their son was a first grader who was among the 20 students and six teachers killed at the school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012.

“I unintentionally took part in things that did hurt these people’s feelings,” said Jones, who also acknowledged raising conspiracy claims about other mass tragedies, from the Oklahoma City and Boston Marathon bombings to the mass shootings in Las Vegas and Parkland, Florida, “and I’m sorry for that.”
