The Free Press Book Club and McNally Robinson Booksellers are pleased to welcome Winnipeg author, lawyer and educator (and Free Press book reviewer) Zilla Jones to the next virtual meeting on Monday, June 29 at 7 p.m. to read from and discuss her debut novel The World So Wide.
Jones is a much-lauded writer of short stories and novels; she has been a finalist for the Writers’ Trust of Canada’s RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for emerging writers and CBC’s Short Story Prize, and in 2023 was one of multiple winners of the Writers’ Trust’s Journey Prize for short fiction published by an emerging writer.
Published in April 2025 by Cormorant Books, The World So Wide novel follows Felicity, a woman born in Winnipeg to a Grenadian mother and (absent) white father, who studies opera in London in the 1960s. When she opts to visit Grenada for a perfomance in 1983, Felicity becomes tangled up in October’s Grenada Revolution — just as the Americans invade.

In her review of The World So Wide for the Free Press, Kathryne Cardwell called Jones “a powerhouse,” lauding her work at dismantling “the myth of Canada as a haven of equality, with Felicity’s mother noting that she had to fool the Canadian government to immigrate as a Black woman” and calling The World So Wide “a gift and a magnificent read that will leave readers crying for an encore.”
For June’s Free Press Book Club, Jones will join Free Press columnist and author Niigaan Sinclair, McNally Robinson Booksellers manager Angela Torgerson and Free Press audience engagement manager Erin Lebar. Jones will read from The World So Wide, discuss the book’s themes and field questions from viewers and readers.
Copies of The World So Wide are available to purchase at McNally Robinson Booksellers; there’s no cost to join the book club or virtual discussion. Video of the meeting will be available for replay on the Free Press YouTube channel following the event.
The Free Press Book Club is free to join; for more information, including upcoming picks and how to join the mailing list, visit wfp.to/bookclub.
