TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

A work-related romance might be blossoming for many of you. Others might see ways to use money and resources from work to improve your job and your domestic world. Give yourself permission to please yourself and do exactly what you want to do. Let go of what you no longer need.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Social occasions, romantic get-togethers and fun times with kids are on the menu for you. Enjoy shmoozing with everyone. You’ll be emphatic in discussions related to your job and work. A sense of enthusiasm will pervade your day.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is wonderful day to socialize, especially with younger people. You will also enjoy entertaining at home or doing something to make your dwelling look more attractive. Relations with family members will be warm and mutually generous. You might see ways to boost your income.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You’re happy with your surroundings and pleased to interact with others. Your energy is pumped, in part because you’re in contact with family members you haven’t seen for a while. This is a feel-good, romantic day. Home and family issues (including domestic improvements) will please you.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The moon is in your sign, which means things will tend to go your way. Discussions about finances and your possessions will go well; however, commit to nothing important as there is a moon alert all day. Do your homework and prepare to act tomorrow.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’ll find it easy to charm everyone as you’re enthusiastic and happy. You might have strong ideas about financial matters, especially issues related to the past. Be smart and postpone speaking up about these ideas until tomorrow. (You can organize your thoughts.) See moon alert above.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You’re enthusiastic to talk to everyone because you have something to say. This is all well and good but be aware there is a moon alert all day, which means postponing important decisions until tomorrow. Nevertheless, you make a great impression on everyone including authority figures.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You continue to be high-viz. In particular, friends and groups are supportive to you. Issues related to higher education, publishing, the media, medicine and the law will shine. Behind-the-scenes-research can pay off. (Wait until tomorrow to share your ideas.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You’re happy with the impression you create on everyone, and you’re pleased with the practical and financial support from another party, spouse or partner. Do something different to expand your world. (See moon alert above.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’re powerful because you look good to everyone and your style of relating to those who are close to you (as well as members of the general public) is positive. Travel is blessed. Romance with someone from afar or someone different might be meaningful.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’re happy because financial and practical support are forthcoming and this is reassuring. In particular, it makes you feel better about your job. Be prepared to go more than halfway when dealing with someone else. It’s just what’s happening. Be conciliatory.

Scheif hopes to not let the Wheels fall off

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018

Mark Scheifele is no professional golfer. But he's going to get to live and play like one for a few days later this month — even though he admits the competition will provide a stiff test for both his skillset and his patience.

"It’s a pretty cool thing and trying to stay calm is my biggest thing. I get pretty angry sometimes if my game’s not going as well as I would like it to go," the star centre with the Winnipeg Jets said Wednesday.

"I know it’s going to be fun as long as I don’t have too many bad shots and break a club or something like that."

Scheifele will be among the field of 156 who tee it up at Southwood Golf & Country Club for the Players Cup beginning Aug. 16. As a high-profile sponsor's exemption with no experience at this level, his goal is simply to enjoy the tournament and maybe find a way to make it to the weekend.

Composer dares to use A-word

Conrad Sweatman 4 minute read 2:01 AM EST

It’s a term composers sometimes use hesitatingly to describe their own music.

“I’m a fan of really strong melodies and harmonies that are engaging and accessible to the audience. One of my goals was to create music that’s not too academic or cerebral,” says jazz pianist and composer Florian Hoefner about his work Into the Aquasphere, which Jazz Winnipeg and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra co-present at Desautels Concert Hall at the University of Manitoba under the baton of Alexandre Da Costa.

You might have spotted the term-in-question in Hoefner’s comment: “accessible.”

One can hardly blame the German-born, Newfoundland-based Hoefner for invoking the “A-word.”

Communist smooch lingers on in German capital

Steve MacNaull 5 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

What a lip-lock it is.

A smooch that inspired a famous mural and is replicated on every souvenir possible from posters, postcards and mugs to keychains, tea towels and t-shirts.

It’s a reminder of communism, but also a symbol of freedom and even LGBTTQ+ inclusivity.

It’s the My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love mural on the East Side Gallery of the Berlin Wall by Russian painter Dmitri Vrubel. (It’s sometimes also referred to as Fraternal Kiss.)

Pharmacists can aid in primary care

Adalyn Neufeld 4 minute read 2:00 AM EST

Have you ever gone to pick up a prescription only to discover you have no refills left? The pharmacy must contact your doctor for authorization before it can fill the prescription again. You may then wait days for a response before receiving your medication.

In community pharmacies, this is a very common occurrence. Pharmacists must rely on physicians to respond to their requests in a timely manner. Within the already busy and complex workflow of a pharmacy, these delays create challenges. Patients may understandably become upset or even go without important medication.

From my experience working as a pharmacy assistant, I understand, first, what care pharmacists can provide and, more importantly, that a disconnect of care exists between pharmacists and primary care physicians.

This fragmented care, shaped by limitations in pharmacists’ scope of practice and ineffective communication systems, creates challenges for patients and pharmacy teams. This disconnect affects the stability of the health-care system in Manitoba, as these limitations can flow upward to other issues.

BRANDON — A woman who was sexually assaulted on the Brandon University campus said she has become a powerful voice for victims as she directly addressed her rapist before he was sentenced to three years in prison.

“Staying silent meant people like you would continue to get away with preying on victims, thinking there were no consequences, and I couldn’t let that happen — not just for myself, but for all people whose voices could not, have not, or will not be heard,” the 28-year-old woman said in Brandon’s Court of King’s Bench Monday.

The Indigenous woman from Thompson sobbed as she recalled feeling scared following the sexual assault in the men’s dormitory on Sept. 24, 2017.

“I don’t forgive you. I will, however, thank you for showing me that I’m stronger than I ever thought I could be, and that I don’t have to feel guilty for tolerating anything I’m not OK with,” she said as her hands shook.
