ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a wonderful day to shmooz and socialize with others. Sporting events and fun activities with children will also appeal. Romance is definitely energized. Some people will encounter new love.

Baazigar star Shah Rukh Khan is 61 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day particularly at home (even though there is increased activity and chaos there). Relations with co-workers are positive. In fact, for some of you, a work-related romance might begin. Ex-spouses, partners and friends from your past are back on the scene.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a wonderful day for you, which is why you feel energetic, intellectually alive and eager to talk to others. You want to share your ideas, especially with a romantic interest — if you can swing this. Be patient with silly mistakes at work.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a great day for financial negotiations if you can avoid the moon alert (see above). In particular, you might be pleased with purchases made for your home, especially to make your place more attractive. Possibly, you’ll buy something you’ve had your eye on for some time.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a winner day for you because the moon is dancing with fiery Mars and lucky Jupiter in your own sign, as well as winking at fair Venus. This makes you flirtatious, happy, convivial and ready to enjoy the company of others. Romance is blessed.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a feel-good day because something going on behind the scenes will give you a warm feeling in your tummy. Perhaps you’re expecting money or something else to come through for you. (It looks like it will.) You’ll be pleased with purchases you make.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a wonderful day to buy wardrobe goodies for yourself, as long as you can avoid the moon alert (see above). It’s also a great day to shmooz. Enjoy the company of friends and groups. You might be involved in something competitive. Romance is blessed.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It doesn’t get much better than this. The sun and Mercury are in your sign while the moon, Mars and Jupiter are lined up at the top of your chart. This makes you powerful, charismatic and diplomatically ambitious. Go after what you want, but be aware of the moon alert.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Be confident about exploring opportunities to travel, and also avenues related to medicine, the law, higher education and publishing, as these are all areas that will favour you. A friendship might turn romantic and surprise you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Financial negotiations will favour you, along with discussions about how to divide or share something such as an inheritance — even a debt. You might also get a boss, parent or someone in authority to endorse your side. Hey, whatever works.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a fabulous day to shmooz because people want to see you. Ongoing relations with spouses, partners and close friends are excellent. Travel plans will appeal. Possibly, a long-distance romance or someone from your past will reappear to ignite something exciting.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

A work-related romance might begin for many of you. Certainly, you feel affectionate and passionate. You might also have a strong desire to “get away from all this” and do something different as you want change and adventure.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan (1965) shares your birthday. You are genuine, good-natured and logical. You like to promote the welfare of others. Expect exciting changes and increased personal freedom this year. Learn to be more flexible and to let go of whatever holds you back. Seek new opportunities. Expect to meet new friends.

Why are Manitoba's school immunization programs so far from achieving herd immunity?

Why are Manitoba's school immunization programs so far from achieving herd immunity?

Maggie Macintosh  26 minute read Saturday, May. 1, 2021

Sometimes, neither a lollipop nor a dinosaur sticker is enough to convince someone to get a needle.

Dr. Michele Feierstein, a pediatrician for more than 35 years, knows that all too well.

Feierstein has given thousands of immunizations to young patients throughout her career, but she has also had her fair share of difficult conversations with parents who are vaccine-hesitant or outright anti-vaxxers.

She does not bar families who have lukewarm feelings about or adamant views against immunization, whether they be rooted in misinformation, distrust, religious belief, or any other reason, from her practice at the Manitoba Clinic.

Russian Olympic biathlon champion loses Sochi doping case

Graham Dunbar, The Associated Press 5 minute read Thursday, Sep. 24, 2020

GENEVA - Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Olga Zaitseva lost her appeal Thursday against disqualification from the 2014 Sochi Olympics for her part in Russia’s state-backed doping program.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said its judges upheld the International Olympic Committee’s disciplinary ruling of 2017, which used evidence against Zaitseva from Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov.

Zaitseva’s disqualification from all her Sochi events strips Russia of its silver medal in the women’s biathlon 4x6-kilometre relay. She won — and will retain — her gold medals from the same relay event at the two previous Winter Games in 2006 and 2010.

Her lawyer in Switzerland, Yvan Henzer, said Zaitseva would appeal the CAS ruling at Switzerland’s supreme court. The federal court typically only intervenes if legal process was abused.

The ‘Gang of Nine’ and business as usual at city hall

The ‘Gang of Nine’ and business as usual at city hall

Editorial 4 minute read 2:00 AM EST

In the early 1990s, after the province reduced the number of municipal wards in Winnipeg to 15, critics spoke at length of how a theoretical “Gang of Eight” could control all decision making at city hall. In subsequent years, there were various incarnations of a Gang of Eight, although it was never conclusively shown that eight members of city council could consistently stay on the same page long enough to dominate civic affairs.

That is an apt tale to consider now, as Winnipeg city hall welcomes nine rookie councillors, the largest number of non-incumbents elected in more than 30 years.

Theoretically, this new group of councillors could band together and push through various reforms. It’s a highly intriguing scenario for anyone who has watched the city, on occasion, shun riskier strategies in favor of status quo politics.

However, as was the case in the early 1990s, the chances of that happening begin to fall apart once you consider the work of building and sustaining a coalition of rookie councillors who come from a broad array of backgrounds.

Expect a reasonable approach to keep Manitoba’s minimum wage out of cellar

Expect a reasonable approach to keep Manitoba’s minimum wage out of cellar

Tom Brodbeck 5 minute read Tuesday, May. 31, 2022

The devil will be in the details when it comes to how much the Stefanson government will increase the minimum wage in 2022 under proposed legislation that’s expected to become law this week.

My prediction: government will boost the base wage by at least $1.10 an hour this year.

As expected, the Stefanson government plans to alter its inflation-based formula for setting the minimum wage, which now stands at $11.95 an hour. Normally, the base wage is indexed to the previous year’s rate of inflation. That’s sound policy during normal times. However, with inflation growing at rates not seen in more than 30 years, an immediate adjustment is required to ensure minimum-wage earners don’t lose purchasing power.

Conservative governments in Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick have all announced significant increases to their base wages in 2022, putting pressure on the Stefanson government to follow suit. Failure to do so would see Manitoba’s minimum wage (previously scheduled to rise 40 cents an hour to $12.35 on Oct. 1) rank lowest in the country.

Killer pleads guilty in three-year-old daughter’s fatal stabbing

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Thursday, May. 26, 2022

A Winnipeg man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shocking stabbing death of his three-year-old daughter.

Frank Nausigimana, 29, entered his plea before Queen’s Bench Justice Joan McKelvey during a brief hearing Thursday morning.

Asked if he understood he was waiving his right to a trial, Nausigimana, through an American Sign Language interpreter, told McKelvey: “ Yes, I accept the punishment and I am following the law of God.”

“I’ve decided that I am going to pray,” Nausigimana said. “I admit I am guilty.”
