MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Avoid heated discussions regarding kids, social plans, shared expenses or dealing with authority figures. (This covers a wide swath.) People are touchy! Pull in your reins and tread carefully. You don’t have to be right. You don’t even have to be wrong.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

There’s a lot of belligerent energy out there, which can make casual everyday exchanges with neighbours, siblings and relatives a bit testy. Don’t try to prove anything. Or perhaps, you feel the need to defend yourself, especially with issues related to home and family? Stay chill.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a poor day for money discussions, especially dealing with someone older or an authority figure. Likewise, work-related negotiations or anything to do with your pet could lead to a dispute. You don’t need this. If you smell trouble coming, walk away.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

The moon is in your sign at odds with Saturn, which can make you feel depressed or pessimistic. Things look worse than they really are. (I know it’s hard to believe that.) Separations might occur for some of you. Resist the paralysis of the negative.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might feel lonely or cut off from others, which could make you feel a bit depressed. Be aware that things look worse than they are; however, you might have to separate from someone? Family discussions might also be aggressive. Avoid accident-prone behaviour. Stay chill.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a tough day as even casual conversations with others might be aggressive or a bit in-your-face. (Whaat?) You might even feel threatened by someone or feel you have to defend your ideas. Pay attention to everything you say and do as this is an accident-prone day.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Money disputes or spats about property could arise. If this happens, be aware you are high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. You might have to say goodbye to someone and others are aware of this.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Tread carefully when dealing with parents, bosses, authority figures and the police, as conflict will easily arise. If so, you might be quickly at a disadvantage. Never underestimate the power of courtesy. Separations might occur.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a challenging day for you. Elements of aggression seem to exist, which could cause difficulty dealing with your kids or throw up hurdles in coming up with enough money or practical support for something you want to do. Travel will be a poor choice.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Keep your wits about you, especially talking to friends and groups, as you might say something you later regret. Even discussions with partners, spouses and close friends could be challenging and might result in some kind of separation. Go gently.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

It’s not in your best interest to challenge authority figures as this will quickly lead to an aggressive dispute or argument. Be more skilful in figuring out how to get what you want. You might say goodbye to someone at work, or even a pet.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Romance is tough. Likewise, relations with kids will be challenging. Avoid controversial subjects like politics, religion and racial issues that will lead to arguments, and could put you in a position where you feel you have to defend yourself. You don’t need this. Be observant but just tread water. Stay out of the deep end.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Nia Long (1971) shares your birthday. You are forward thinking, responsible and organized. You’re also an activist who is often involved in community fundraising projects to improve the quality of life. Exciting changes and increased personal freedom are likely this year. Grab new opportunities and act fast. Expect to travel.

Opera singer David Daniels no longer in singers’ union following sexual assault guilty plea

The Associated Press 2 minute read Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023

NEW YORK (AP) — Countertenor David Daniels is no longer a member of the union for singers following his guilty plea to a charge of sexual assault.

The 57-year-old and his husband, Scott Walters, pleaded guilty to sexual assault of an adult, a second-degree felony, in Houston's Harris County District Court on Aug. 4. Their accuser was aspiring opera singer Sam Schultz.

They both were sentenced to eight years’ probation and required to register as sex offenders.

American Guild of Musical Artists spokesperson Alicia Cook said Wednesday that Daniels is no longer a member of the union.

Must-see Folk Fest workshops

16 minute read Thursday, Jul. 5, 2018

Workshops have always been an integral part of the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

They are magic-moment makers; a curated group of musicians — sometimes friends, sometimes strangers — on one stage playing together, supporting each other, creating something that will only exist for an hour or two. No one knows what will come out of the collaboration, but usually it’s something special.

When the Free Press spoke to Winnipeg Folk Festival artistic director Chris Frayer ahead of the lineup release in early March, he noted he would be paying some extra attention to workshops this year, as some of the special projects occurring during the past couple of festivals had pulled some of his attention away.

And with 37 workshops on the books, it would seem he followed through on his promise.

Brian Bowman wins mayoral battle

Aldo Santin and Mary Agnes Welch 6 minute read Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014

In the end, it wasn’t even close.

A mayoral race that was supposed to be a head-to-head battle between privacy lawyer Brian Bowman and former NDP MP and MLA Judy Wasylycia-Leis turned into a rout on election night. Wasylycia-Leis, the experienced politician, had held what looked like an unassailable lead for months, but Bowman, the outsider who promised Winnipeggers a better, prosperous future, chipped doggedly away at it.

“I’m excited to tell you that positive change is coming to city hall,” Bowman told roaring supporters at the Inn At The Forks after making his way into the small ballroom accompanied by his wife and two young sons.

He said he hadn’t expecting such a landslide victory, but had believed that the campaign was building momentum.
