TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

The moon is in your sign dancing beautifully with Mercury, which will increase the pace of your day and attract others to you. It will be a chatty day. You might be keen to share your feelings or write down something for someone else to read. Plans to solidify your home look solid.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Someone older might have advice for you. Possibly, you are the person dispensing advice. This is a good day to learn something new because you have the discipline and focus necessary to make it happen; plus, you won’t overlook details.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

It’s the perfect day to draw up a budget and think about how to use your money as economically as possible. (Right up your alley. Let’s face it, you wrote the book.) You might give advice to a boss or someone in authority; or a boss might have advice for you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

A conversation with a parent, boss or someone in authority could be important. It might be your chance to share your feelings about something. You want to organize your life with an overall plan. (Always a good idea.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

If you have a chance for some time alone, you might do some deep thinking. This is also a good day to think about how you can expand your world through travel, learning, study and talking to different people.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Discussions with partners, spouses and close friends will be serious but meaningful. Advice might flow back and forth. Someone might give someone else a hint about how to talk to a boss or a parent. You’re focused more on solid, practical issues.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You’ll make a great impression on bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs because they see you as reliable, conscientious and hard-working. Spouses, partners and close friends will see you as bright, clever and interesting. You’ve got your bases covered.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is the perfect day to study, write or review an important paper because your mind will be detail-oriented and self-disciplined. You’ll have a practical approach to dealing with kids, as well as social events. You might have ideas about covering the cost of something.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a solid day to discuss how to divide assets, share the cost of something or deal with inheritances, taxes and debt. Very likely, it could relate to family matters or something to do with your home. A partner or friend might keep things lighthearted.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

When talking to someone close, you’ll steer the conversation in the direction you want it to go. You know what’s important to you, and you’ll discuss it. You don’t want to waste anything. You’ll get great satisfaction from a job well done.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a productive day. You’ll keep plugging along at whatever you have to do with your job, health or a pet. You’ll enjoy little intervals and breaks where you can “chat over the fence” with someone in a lighthearted way.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actress Michelle Yeoh (1962) shares your birthday. You are charming, strong-willed and open-minded. You’re also perceptive, independent and determined. This is a year of service to others, probably to family. Therefore, take care of yourself so you can be a resource to those who turn to you for guidance, comfort and courage. Clearing the deck and filling the seats

Editorial 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

The winds of change are always blowing at Winnipeg’s city hall, but with a civic election looming this fall, the gusts through the council chamber at 510 Main St. seem particularly strong.

With slightly less than three months until voters head to the polls, no less than five incumbent councillors have declared they will not stand for re-election. Combine that with the possibility that one or more other members of the 15-member body could lose their bids for re-election, and what becomes apparent is that the makeup of Winnipeg’s municipal decision-making assembly will have changed dramatically when the new council is sworn in.

The five veteran councillors who have opted not to seek another term are Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry), Markus Chambers (St. Norbert–Seine River), John Orlikow (River Heights-Fort Garry), Janice Lukes (Waverley West) and Brian Mayes (St. Vital).

All the departing councillors are experienced representatives, with Rollins and Chambers having served two terms, Lukes having been on council for a dozen years, and Mayes and Orlikow having served 15 and 17 years respectively. Had any or all of them chosen to run again, they would almost certainly have been re-elected, as incumbency remains a most formidable force in municipal politics.

Throne speech offers glimpse of PCs’ priorities

Shannon Sampert 5 minute read Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018

Throne speeches are more than just pomp and circumstance and the opportunity for selfies between political rivals on the beautiful marble floors of the Manitoba legislature building on Broadway. They set the agenda for the legislative session and set the tone for the government as it moves into its new session. Looked at carefully, they also reveal the priorities of the government by what is said, and also what is not said.

But they are also highly symbolic. They are delivered by the lieutenant-governor of the province, who acts as the symbol of the head of state, the Queen, but they are written by speechwriters for the government of the day.

Political scientists have studied the throne speeches delivered at the federal level to understand the thematic commonalities and what they say about nationalism over the past 30 years. Janine Brodie of the University of Alberta, for example, determined that Canadian throne speeches delivered before the 2000s embraced a more neo-liberal tone that was tied to the global economy.

After 2000, an analysis by Tim Nieguth (Laurentian University) and Tracey Raney (Ryerson University) found that Conservative throne speeches tended to focus on neo-conservative themes — emphasizing the family, the military and threats to security — while Liberals’ speeches talked about health care and Indigenous issues.

Walking past history — and understated renewal

Walking past history — and understated renewal

Stephen Borys 6 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Several times each week I walk, cycle, or drive along Taché Avenue in St. Boniface.

It is one of Winnipeg’s most remarkable streets. Within a few hundred metres stand St. Boniface Cathedral, the cemetery where Louis Riel is buried, the archbishop’s residence, St. Boniface Hospital, La Vérendrye Park, and the Musée de Saint-Boniface. Few places in Canada bring together so many layers of history within such a compact landscape. This is where Manitoba’s story began. More than 175 years later, it remains one of the country’s most important historic precincts.

Yet it is always the museum that captures my attention.

It may be because I have spent much of my professional life working in museums and heritage institutions. More likely, it is because the old Grey Nuns’ convent has always struck me as one of those rare buildings that is far more than architecture. It has witnessed nearly two centuries of Manitoba’s history.
