TV personality Martha Stewart is 85 on Monday.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day! You’ll enjoy time spent alone in private moments or solitude because you’re sensitive to the problems of others. This will heighten your feelings of compassion and encourage you to be helpful to someone in need. Enjoy relaxing at home.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re interested in the world! You want to know what’s going on and you want to talk to others. In particular, you might feel sympathetic toward a friend or group, which in turn might prompt you to become involved in a charitable organization. Your Spidey sense is also heightened.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

People notice you. You can use this to your advantage if you want to set an example, especially one that is caring, compassionate and generous. You also feel confident about your finances. You might shop for something big!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your desire to expand your world is strong. Not only are you interested in travel, you’re also interested in big ideas and making progress via medicine or the law in a way that benefits others. Because your idealism is aroused, you want to help people in need.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re happy to work alone or behind the scenes. Nevertheless, you might do some fundraising or use the wealth and resources of someone else to benefit others. With Mars high in your chart, your ambition is aroused. Plus, you’re interested in talking to younger people — perhaps to rally your troops?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular day and you’re eager to shmooz, especially with members of the general public. You might have a strong connection with a partner, spouse or close friend. Your sympathies are aroused, perhaps for someone close to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a fabulous impression on others, which is something you can use if you want to persuade someone about something dear to your heart. This could be a charitable cause or something work-related or relevant to your health.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Do something different, because you’re keen for adventure! This is a marvellous day to shmooz. Accept invitations to socialize. Romantic interests and playful times with kids will delight. You feel particularly concerned about the welfare of children.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might want to help a family member. You’re certainly sensitive to the needs of family members right now. You might research ways to get funding or help for someone who needs assistance. Personally, travel and a chance to do something different appeals to you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’re an idealist who is concerned about the welfare of society. You might be up on your proverbial soapbox or out there with petitions because you care about a cause. Your imagination is heightened, which promotes artistic fantasies.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

If you can do anything to help others, especially via your job, you will, because you feel sensitive to the concerns and problems of people around you. You might be personally generous with your own funds or look for ways to encourage others to be more altruistic.

Climate: what must be done now

Gwynne Dyer 5 minute read Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026

I WAS reading an article about the current wildfires written in a reputable paper by a recognized ‘environmental journalist’, but I stumbled to a halt when I read the following sentence: “While the skies over North America and Europe will eventually clear, this climate change-driven era of wildfire will exact a lengthy toll.”

What? Does he expect the skies to “eventually clear” of their own accord? We already know with high confidence (85 to 92 per cent) that next year will be even hotter than this year. What natural event or human action is going to return us to the old ‘normal’? Here’s a market tip: invest in companies making water-bombers.

Some people seek solace in the belief that this is just another El Niño event, a nine-to-12-month weather phenomenon that starts in the tropical eastern Pacific but affects the entire global system. It repeats every two to seven years. This time it is coming back in three years so, technically, it could be just another El Niño — but there are strong reasons to doubt that.

A normal El Niño temporarily adds only about 0.2 C to average global temperature, whereas the 2023-24 El Niño added more than 0.3 C. Much more importantly, that extra heat never went away again. It acted like a ratchet, taking us up past some invisible of no return, and we seem to be stuck there.

Doctor’s departure stressful for teen

Kevin Rollason 6 minute read Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021

Morgan Walker is a typical teen — but only because a piece of his brain the size of a deck of cards was removed four years ago.

Walker, who had seizures multiple times a day before his surgery, fears other people might not be so lucky.

That’s because his surgeon, Dr. Demitre Serletis, is leaving the province and Health Sciences Centre. Serletis will start practising at the Cleveland Clinic in the new year.

“I was kind of shocked, but I understood why,” Walker said from his home in Brandon. “The government really hasn’t been respecting doctors.”

WSO ready to set sail on the Nonsuch

Jill Wilson  5 minute read Tuesday, Jul. 3, 2018

Sailors aboard the Nonsuch as she crossed in the Atlantic in 1668 might have entertained themselves with a few hornpipes or sea shanties to pass the time as they searched for a new trade route from England.

Wednesday night, visitors to the Manitoba Museum’s replica of the 17th-century square-rigged ketch will hear a slightly more elevated soundtrack: selections from the classical canon played by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

WSO resident conductor Julian Pellicano admits the logistics were a bit of a hurdle.

“As it was being renovated, we couldn’t get in the gallery, but just before I left Canada a couple of weeks ago I was able to get in and do some measurements,” the New York-born conductor says from Connecticut, where’s he’s conducting at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. “We figured out a viable plan.”
