MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Virgo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is an excellent day to work and be productive. Use the energy of Mercury retrograde to finish old projects and wrap up loose ends, and you will be surprised at how swiftly jobs will go. Don’t be bossy. Stay focused.

Former German chancellor Angela Merkel turns 72 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

The day is full of opportunities, especially if you work in a creative field or make art. It’s also a great day to socialize. In particular, sporting events and fun activities with kids will appeal. Romance is blessed.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

With Mars in your sign now, you have a lot of energy to get things done. Admittedly, Mercury is still retrograde; however, you can use this energy to finish old projects. It’s best to focus on home and family now. Enjoy entertaining, redecorating or both.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a great day to schmooze with everyone. Enjoy talking to siblings, neighbours and relatives. You’ll also have interesting interactions with new faces. In fact, you’re keen to reach out in your immediate environment, so look around you because you will appreciate your daily surroundings.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You will enjoy buying beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. (Especially art objects, jewelry and lovely clothing.) You might also have some good moneymaking ideas. Group activities, especially related to sports and physical competition, might appeal.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The moon is in your sign lined up with beautiful Venus, which makes you cheerful, sociable, warm and friendly. It’s a great day to socialize. You will also enjoy making anything around you more beautiful, especially your home. Enjoy wardrobe shopping as well.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The day is full of contradictions because in one way you are in the spotlight of the sun, which is flattering to you. This is why you might be asked to take on increased responsibilities. However, now in particular you might want to hide or be low-key. It’s your choice.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Friendships are important to you. In fact, someone in particular might be very special, perhaps to the point a platonic friendship turns romantic. Travel plans might also be in the picture. You will also be productive. Get busy.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

People notice you to the degree that some know personal details about your private life. Be aware of this, especially if you have to do some damage control. This could create problems with a spouse, partner or friend.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You want to break free of your routine and do something different. Ideally of course, you would love to travel and get a change of scenery. But if you cannot travel, you can still be a tourist in your own city. Explore your surroundings. Meet new people. See new places. Give a lift to your day.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Although Mercury retrograde might create delays and silly mistakes in your work, you can use it to your favour. Work to tie up loose ends, especially regarding shared property, taxes, debt, inheritances and anything you own jointly with someone else. Money might come your way.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a playful, romantic time for you. However, your home scene might be somewhat busy dealing with guests, increased activity and even chaos. Do your best to make things run as smoothly as possible. Old flames might be back in the picture creating some excitement. Try to have fun. Enjoy the company of children and perhaps romantic partners.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Former German chancellor Angela Merkel (1954) shares your birthday. You’re friendly, easy- going and tenacious. You’re also strong-willed, sympathetic and focused. This is a year of learning and teaching. Take time to renew your spiritual or religious beliefs. Explore philosophies that give you better self-awareness and get you closer to the true meaning of your life.

Local brother act cut their teeth working with the late Jerry Lewis

Bill Redekop  6 minute read Monday, Aug. 21, 2017

One of the toughest tasks for the Steiner Brothers, a former kid tap dancing act from Winnipeg, was performing with Jerry Lewis at hospitals for sick kids.

“Oh my, you’d be trying not to cry,” recalled Rob Steiner, 72.

And Lewis, who would go on to help raise over US$2 billion for muscular dystrophy over his career with his annual telethons, would admonish the boys.

“He’d say, ‘What are you crying for? You’re making them happy. Why are you crying?’”

Internal election reform should be high on Tories’ priority list for 2022

Tom Brodbeck 4 minute read Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021

Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative party has a challenge in the new year: how to change its leadership election process without alienating grassroots members, while also avoiding the kind of debacle it experienced in the fall.

After coming within a whisker of electing a leader who ran on an anti-vaccine mandate platform before the Oct. 30 vote, the party will almost certainly revise its voter eligibility rules in 2022.

Former Conservative MP Shelly Glover, who ran for the leadership to replace outgoing party boss Brian Pallister, signed up thousands of new members during the race. She did so largely by appealing to opponents of vaccine mandates and other measures taken by the province to fight COVID-19.

Under the current rules, candidates were allowed to sign up new members until a month before voting day. Last-minute signups allow candidates to attract new blood to the party. However, under the Tories’ one member, one vote system, it also leaves the party open to a hostile takeover.

A mature prime minister

Re: Carney plays well on the road (Editorial, July 14)

The editorial discusses Mark Carney’s strengths from being head of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England.

There is merit in this analysis, but it overlooks Carney’s major contribution to date. This is the simple fact he has replaced Justin Trudeau. Trudeau’s primary personal characteristic is petulance. He slapped a moral label on every issue. If you agreed with him you were amongst the virtuous, if you disagreed with him you were morally culpable and/or stupid. He polarized Canadians in a blink of an eye.

Tory meddling could cost MPI millions, boost Autopac rates

Larry Kusch 9 minute read Monday, Jun. 24, 2019

The Pallister government has directed Manitoba Public Insurance to give complete control of its future online product sales to insurance brokers, a move that could cost the corporation an extra $23 million over five years and boost Autopac rates, according to documents obtained by the Free Press.

The documents, which include emails, letters, briefing notes and presentations, show repeated interventions by the Progressive Conservative government on behalf of brokers and shed light on why the Tory-appointed MPI board of directors sought a legal opinion last year to clarify its rights and responsibilities.

The documents also reveal that the PC government directed MPI management last fall to extend the corporation's contract with brokers by two years to Feb. 28, 2021 at a remuneration rate MPI viewed as excessive.

MPI had first proposed a less generous package than the brokers had been receiving, and then offered zero per cent increases in the first two years followed by 0.75 per cent in Year 3, mimicking government policy on civil servant and Crown corporation employee pay. The brokers wound up receiving annual increases to their base $84.5 million compensation that are indexed to inflation (the Consumer Price Index, which rose 1.9 per cent in March compared to a year earlier ).

Each of city's historic bridges has unique story

Declan Schroeder 11 minute read Sunday, Sep. 6, 2020

They span the muddy waters from which Winnipeg derives its name. They connect neighbourhood to neighbourhood. They’re a fundamental feature of our city.

Winnipeg has a reputation as a “River City,” but many don’t know the stories behind the bridges they use every day.

While a bridge may seem to be a boring piece of basic infrastructure, many of Winnipeg’s have fascinating histories that go back more than 100 years.
