I WAS reading an article about the current wildfires written in a reputable paper by a recognized ‘environmental journalist’, but I stumbled to a halt when I read the following sentence: “While the skies over North America and Europe will eventually clear, this climate change-driven era of wildfire will exact a lengthy toll.”

What? Does he expect the skies to “eventually clear” of their own accord? We already know with high confidence (85 to 92 per cent) that next year will be even hotter than this year. What natural event or human action is going to return us to the old ‘normal’? Here’s a market tip: invest in companies making water-bombers.

Some people seek solace in the belief that this is just another El Niño event, a nine-to-12-month weather phenomenon that starts in the tropical eastern Pacific but affects the entire global system. It repeats every two to seven years. This time it is coming back in three years so, technically, it could be just another El Niño — but there are strong reasons to doubt that.

A normal El Niño temporarily adds only about 0.2 C to average global temperature, whereas the 2023-24 El Niño added more than 0.3 C. Much more importantly, that extra heat never went away again. It acted like a ratchet, taking us up past some invisible of no return, and we seem to be stuck there.

There was plenty of consternation to be heard, though, by anyone who grew plant varieties that had become chemically dependent over the years. Roses, for example. Would rose gardens ever be the same? Turns out, you can have the rose garden of your dreams without the use of any pesticides.

Alex Henderson is the curator of living collections at Royal Botanical Garden in Burlington, Ont. Henderson says that RBG planted its first rose garden in 1967 as a centennial project. For the next 50 years, the garden existed as a monoculture of roses with about 20 to 35 cultivars of the same rose variety in each bed — a traditional style that was formal and uniform. Henderson says management of the roses was heavily reliant on the use of pesticides and fungicides.

“When Ontario’s cosmetic pesticides ban took effect in spring 2009, it basically meant the toolkit we were using on the roses was removed,” says Henderson. Without the application of chemicals that the roses had become used to, the rose garden became infected with black spot, a common fungal disease of roses. “It got to the point where in midsummer there were no leaves on the roses,” says Henderson. The situation was compounded by the fact that the soil in the beds was heavily contaminated by pesticide residues and impoverished by a lack of nutrients.

By 2016, with Canada’s sesquicentennial just around the corner, Henderson says a decision had to be made as to whether to continue to grow roses or come up with a new toolkit that was sustainable and go in an entirely different direction.

Investigators have interviewed four other witnesses and are also set to interview Korchinski-Paquet's family this week, Monica Hudon said.

Korchinski-Paquet, 29, fell from a 24th-floor balcony last Wednesday while police were in her home. Her family has questioned the role of officers in her death.

In a statement on social media Sunday afternoon, Monias said the RCMP had arrested one person.
