‘Like TNT’: Experts say Saskatchewan attacks underscore need for justice support

Holly McKenzie-Sutter, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 7, 2022

A deadly stabbing rampage over the Labour Day weekend in rural Saskatchewan underscores a critical lack of social supports in Canada's justice system, experts say.

RCMP have named Myles Sanderson, 32, as a suspect in Sunday's attacks on the James Smith Cree Nation and nearby village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon, that left 10 people dead and 18 injured. His younger brother Damien Sanderson, who had also been named a suspect, was also found dead near one of the crime scenes Monday from wounds police said were not self-inflicted.

Myles Sanderson was taken into custody near the town of Rosthern, Sask., on Wednesday.

Darryl Davies, a criminology expert at Carleton University, said risk factors for violent crime are well understood in his field and Sanderson’s profile, as described in a February decision from the Parole Board of Canada, should have given off more warning signs.

Pimicikamak Cree First Nation, also known as Cross Lake, remains under lockdown as RCMP Major Crime Services investigate a shooting that left a 42-year-old man dead.

RCMP said officers were notified by local First Nation Safety Officers at about 9:30 p.m. Friday about a seriously injured person on Main Road in the community. Officers found two males at the scene, including one with a gunshot wound.

The 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The second male was not injured and did not require medical attention, police said.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, along with Cross Lake RCMP and Forensic Identification Services, are investigating. Police said the suspect is believed to be known to the person shot and may still be in the community.

Official finds low risk of lead poisoning at schoolyard

Larry Kusch 5 minute read Friday, Sep. 14, 2018

A local health official is reassured the risk of lead poisoning for students at Weston School is "very low".

Dr. Lisa Richards, medical officer of health with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, visited the school's grounds on Friday. She said the playground is covered either with sod, concrete or pea gravel.

"I didn't see a lot of exposed soil. So, I believe that the risk to the students and the public at large is very low as a result of the lead levels that were documented a decade ago," she said in an interview.

On Thursday, it was revealed that 2007 and 2008 soil test results in several Winnipeg neighbourhoods previously found to have elevated areas of lead were not disclosed to the public by the former NDP government. At a number of locations, including Weston School, as well as in Point Douglas, Minto and Wolseley, lead concentrations in soil exceeded national guidelines.

Day of signings for home club and on the farm

Mike McIntyre 3 minute read Wednesday, Jun. 24, 2026

The Winnipeg Jets and pending restricted free agent forward Isak Rosen have quickly found some middle ground.

Both sides came together on Wednesday for a two year contract extension. Rosen, 23, will earn US$925,000 per season. The slick Swedish skater was coming out of his entry-level deal and had 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 37 combined games for the Jets and Buffalo Sabres last year.

He also led Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, with 25 goals in 37 games prior to being promoted full-time to the NHL.

Rosen was shipped to Winnipeg along with defenceman Jacob Bryson, a 2027 second-round pick, and a conditional 2026 fourth-round pick in exchange for blue-liners Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn at the trade deadline.

Abortion rights poised to go before Michigan voters in fall

Joey Cappelletti, The Associated Press 5 minute read Monday, Jul. 11, 2022

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Abortion rights are poised to come before Michigan voters in November after an abortion rights campaign turned in a record-breaking number of signatures Monday for a ballot initiative to the secretary of state’s office.

The effort will further increase attention on Michigan's elections, where the battleground state’s Democratic governor and attorney general have made abortion rights a centerpiece of their reelection campaigns.

The push to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution comes weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gave states the power to decide whether to ban the procedure. The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

Michigan is among several states with a pre-Roe abortion law that was set to take effect if Roe was overturned. However, a judge issued an injunction that temporarily blocked it. The 1931 law would make abortion a felony in all cases, except when “necessary to preserve the life of such woman.”
