Star Trek star John Cho turns 54 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You have strong ideas and you want to be heard. However, be aware your logic is being influenced more than usual by your feelings. (You could be kidding yourself as well as others.) Having said that, you will feel sympathetic to family members.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

If you make a major purchase, your decisions might be driven by your feelings — not logic. Discussions with others will be warm and affectionate. Artists will be productive because they’re in touch with their muse.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your ruler the moon is in your sign lined up with Mercury. We know you’re a sensitive person, and with Mercury lined up with the moon, it will be easy for you to express your feelings to others. (Be careful about feeling overwhelmed by small issues.) Go gently and slowly.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a romantic day for you because fair Venus is lined up with Neptune, which heightens your ideals and makes you look at others with compassion and tenderness. You might fall in love with someone and feel they are your soulmate.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your sympathy for the less-fortunate is very strong. This is caring and noble; however, don’t give away the farm, because you might have to protect your own self interest. Your ruler Mercury is lined up with the moon urging you to share your innermost thoughts with someone.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Relations with friends and even members of groups will be very warm and affectionate. In fact, you might want to help a friend in some way. You might volunteer for something. Be aware that whatever you do will be noticed by others because you’re high-viz.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Very likely, you will be admired for your good taste, appreciation of the arts and ability to sympathize with those who are less-fortunate. This could lead to lively discussions about politics, religion or racial issues. If so, be careful because you will lead with your feelings.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your appreciation of beauty is heightened, making this the perfect time to visit galleries, museums, buildings and parks. You’ll enjoy the beauty of your surroundings, and also elegant ideas. Exercise caution about important financial decisions which might be loosey-goosey.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Romance is affectionate and meaningful in a special way. You might feel you have found the perfect person for you. (And this might be the case.) You will also want to share what you have with someone less-fortunate. Remember: true generosity is giving what is needed.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Enjoy warm relations with spouses, partners and friends because Venus is opposite your sign dancing with idealistic Neptune, softening the edges of all your relationships. It’s a wonderful day to socialize, enjoy the arts, sporting events, fun with kids and romantic outings.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

A work-related romance might begin. If so, it might feel like it was written in the stars. Destiny. This is a marvellous day to socialize. Accept invitations to shmooz. Enjoy sporting events and playful times with kids.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor John Cho (1972) shares your birthday. You are both adventurous and cautious. You’re imaginative, innovative, grounded and ethical. This year exciting changes will bring you increased freedom. Stay flexible. Let go of things holding you back. Seek out new opportunities and be ready to act fast. Expect to travel and expand your horizons.

Prepare to be … blutterbunged?

David McLaughlin 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

Are you not blutterbunged?

If Russell Crowe’s second-century gladiator character had uttered a 19th century equivalent of “Are you not entertained?” that fit the mood of today’s 21st century, that would be it.

Definitions first. Blutterbunged is an obscure regional dialect word from England that means everything from astonished to confounded to bemused or shocked into speechlessness. Its composition suggests something both more and less, namely blustering bloviation (that’s the more part) and empty words (that’s the empty part). These days we would more naturally punctuate our reaction to an event or statement with a profanity. But you get the drift.

Unearthed by lexicologist Susie Dent, it speaks volumes about our times that it fits now. That we need to reach back hundreds of years to find the right word to adequately capture a contemporary civic reaction to what the hell is going on in politics and the world today.

Climate change threatens events we wait for all year

Jen Zoratti 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

This week, owing to extreme heat and a wild storm with tree-snapping winds, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet had to cancel its full run of Ballet in the Park, a much-loved annual tradition at which people from all over Manitoba can enjoy world-class art in the verdant Assiniboine Park.

Two weeks prior, Rainbow Stage, another jewel of a Winnipeg summer, had to cancel the closing matinee of Jesus Christ Superstar owing to heat and humidity.

And at the beginning of July, Winnipeg Folk Festival attendees baked under scorching temperatures — 47 C with the humidex — to enjoy not just the discovery of music, but the community that has formed in Birds Hill Park on the second weekend of July for over 50 years.

This doesn’t feel great. I do not begrudge cancellations — they are absolutely the correct call for the health and safety of performers and patrons — but I can’t be the only one feeling some existential dread about our summers, and the things that make them special, in the face of a changing climate.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The day is a mixed bag. There are still fun opportunities to play and enjoy socializing with others. However, you might be sandbagged by someone who is critical or negative. Be careful with whom you choose to associate, because they might irk you. Focus on home repairs.

School funding increase called skimpy in light of escalating expenses

Maggie Macintosh 6 minute read Friday, Feb. 4, 2022

Annual operational funding for public school divisions that are strapped for cash, owing to expenses related to COVID-19, staff wage settlements, and a surge in the cost of living, will not keep up with inflation in 2022-23 — for another consecutive year.

Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools will receive $120 million in provincial funding next year to undertake regular operations and address new cost pressures, Manitoba Education announced Friday.

That sum includes base funding of $20.2 million for public and independent schools, a one-time $77-million allotment to address current financial strains, and a $23.2-million grant (the equivalent of a two per cent tax hike) to make up for a mandated freeze of education property taxes, as the province works toward phasing out the tax.

Education Minister Wayne Ewasko touted the commitment as one that will both ensure divisions have the resources required so that all students can succeed, no matter where they live in the province, and reduce the tax burden on residents.

Nicole Zajac was at home Tuesday morning, when an anonymous email landed in her inbox.

Shannon Birchard found out the next day, when a friend contacted her to break the news about images that were starting to blaze across social media and would soon ignite a firestorm in the hockey world and beyond.

There were 55 images in all: screencaps of messages sent to a private Instagram group of Winnipeg hockey players, including Washington Capitals fourth-liner Brendan Leipsic; his brother Jeremey Leipsic of the University of Manitoba Bisons; Florida Panthers prospect Jack Rodewald; and University of North Dakota forward Jackson Keane.

Some discussed cocaine use and sexual exploits. Mostly, though, the men insulted women.

Grade 6: Twilight of the age of innocence

Carolin Vesely 9 minute read Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010

It's Friday morning at Windsor School and we are in the guitar room doing the Chicken Dance while singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

I say "we" because there are no observers allowed at circle time, only participants.

Silly song-and-dance combos might seem like a strange way to start a morning meeting in your world, but that's how we roll in the Circle of Power and Respect -- CPR as it's known in the Responsive Classroom approach to elementary education. That approach is based on the premise children learn best when they have both academic and social-emotional skills.

In CPR, we connect as a class and listen to each other's stories, hopes and fears without putting each other down. Everyone is seen, heard and acknowledged.
