Two actors with Emmy nominations to their names have been announced to join the cast of the Jon Hamm series American Hostage, shooting in Winnipeg this fall.

According to Deadline, Mireille Enos (The Killing) will play Barbara, the wife of Hamm’s character, Fred Heckman, an Indianapolis radio reporter.

His mentee at WIBC news, Ben Hairstone, will be played by William Jackson Harper, known for The Good Place and Love Life.

The eight-episode series, executive produced by and starring Mad Men star Hamm, is a true story based on a podcast of the same name, which Hamm also voiced.

The 1970s-set psychological thriller follows Heckman’s conflicted time in the spotlight after a man named Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his radio program while involved in an active hostage situation; Kiritsis was holding his mortgage broker captive after he was refused an extension to pay his mortgage.

Harper, who receieved a Tony nomination for his role in Uncle Vanya on Broadway, will star in the upcoming fourth season of The Morning Show on Apple+. Enos also has a Tony nomination for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

American Hostage is co-produced by Shawn Ryan, known for The Shield and Lie to Me.

Documentary film is the star of the month at the Dave Barber Cinematheque.

Starting today and running through Nov. 8, Cinematheque and the Winnipeg Film Group play host to the 18th edition of the Gimme Some Truth festival, an annual event devoted to sharing new and restored local, Canadian and international documentaries.

Artist and curator Christina Oyawale — a recent graduate of the University of Manitoba’s master of fine arts program — is the festival’s short-film programming assistant.

Oyawale, who uses they/them pronouns, says the goal of the festival “feels like the opportunity to sit in our collective humanity,” by presenting films about some of the “most human topics affecting us as a society.

Trump has a tough 2 years ahead of him

Peter McKenna 5 minute read 2:00 AM EST

Tuesday was definitely not a good night for the Republican Party.

But it was an especially painful night for U.S. President Donald Trump, who has now lost control of both chambers of Congress. Without sufficient numbers of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, he can no longer dictate the terms for his legislative agenda.

More significantly, the Trump administration will effectively lose congressional control over the “power of the purse.” In a divided U.S. government, it is much harder for the executive branch to secure funding for its various programs, departments and agencies — along with discretionary policy initiatives, tax measures and supplemental wartime requests.

On the positive side, divided government can lead to greater oversight or scrutiny by the legislative branch over the executive — or vice versa. These checks and balances are integral to the U.S. democratic process and can incentivize both branches of government to find compromises.

A gut-ripping defeat suffered by the University of Manitoba Bisons football team nearly 22 months ago feels to receiver Abdul-Karim Gassama like it happened eons ago.

Other times, the anguish still has that yesterday vibe.

"At certain moments, it feels like it's been forever since we went through the game-day routine and competed on that stage. Because last season we didn't even get to put on our jerseys and play, it does feel like forever, to be honest," the 21-year-old University of Manitoba student-athlete said Thursday. "But that Calgary game sticks with you. I feel that every day."

History will show the host Calgary Dinos clipped the Bisons 47-46 in the Canada West conference semifinal game Nov. 2, 2019, the first obstacle cleared by Calgary en route to the Vanier Cup national university football championship.

Tory plan to defund CBC ignores associated costs, impact on Canadian life

Tom Brodbeck 5 minute read Thursday, Apr. 24, 2025

This week, the Conservative Party of Canada unveiled a costed platform that includes a bold and controversial proposal: to defund the CBC.

The plan aims to save taxpayers $1 billion annually by reducing spending on Crown corporations, with the CBC being the primary target. However, the proposal raises significant questions about its feasibility, implications for Canadian journalism and the future of public broadcasting in the country.

Under the Conservative plan, the CBC’s English-language services would be expected to become financially self-sufficient, relying on revenue from viewers, listeners and donations. In contrast, French-language services provided by Radio-Canada would continue to receive public funding.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has argued that the private market can adequately support English-language media, making public funding unnecessary, while maintaining support for French-language services to serve linguistic minorities.
