JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — A Republican U.S. representative says he believes abortion rights activists may be behind vandalism at the building his campaign office shares with an anti-abortion group in southern Michigan.

Attackers smashed windows and a front door of the building in Jackson, Michigan, early Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg’s campaign said. Jackson is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Detroit.

A sign near the building’s entrance was spray-painted with pink paint and two windows were broken, Jackson Police and Fire Services Director Elmer Hitt told MLive.com.

There was no evidence that anyone entered the building and no suspects have been identified, Hitt added.

Walberg, of Tipton, said the spray-painted message appeared to indicate the vandalism was done by someone who supports abortion rights. Walberg said he opposes abortion.

Jackson Right to Life shares the building with his campaign office.

Other incidents of vandalism impacting abortion opponents have been reported in the U.S. following the leak of a draft opinion that suggests the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to overturn its landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Nearly a dozen windows and three glass doors were smashed early Monday at Lennon Pregnancy Center in Dearborn Heights. Someone spray-painted: “If abortions aren’t safe, neither are you.”

“It’s not an isolated incident. It’s not random,” Gary Hillebrand, board president of the center, told the Detroit Free Press.

The Associated Press left a message Thursday seeking comment from Dearborn Heights police.

Some abortion providers and law enforcement agencies have also been preparing for an increase in violence once the Supreme Court announces its official ruling, which is expected soon.

Serial arsonist gets more jail time, community ban

BRANDON — A serial arsonist who believes controlled burning is his “calling” was sentenced to nine months in jail and barred for two years from a southwestern Manitoba community after he deliberately set multiple grass fires during a fire ban in May.

Phillip Andrew Unrau, 72, created a dangerous situation for residents of Margaret and a nearby Hutterite colony on the evening of May 21 when he set fire to several patches of grass along a railway bed, provincial court Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta said on Wednesday.

People in the community, located 45 kilometres southeast of Brandon, called the fire department. While no residents saw Unrau light the fires, he made incriminating comments to witnesses and was found alone near the burning land that stretched for 274 metres, the judge said.

“The damage to property here was minimal, but the emotional and psychological harm that Mr. Unrau causes to his neighbours is significant,” she said.

It appears increasingly likely that voters who want to see safe-consumption sites in Winnipeg will have to wait until a new government is elected. And the longer the Tories swim against the current of public opinion on this issue, the more likely it is that a different government will be unveiled in the fall.

Law will curb e-scooter enthusiasts

Editorial 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

For people concerned about safety on Manitoba’s sidewalks and roadways, the province’s announcement that new rules will be introduced next year regarding the use of e-scooters and other personal electric vehicles (PEVs) was no doubt met with an enthusiastic “It’s about time.”

As their popularity and their presence among pedestrians on sidewalks and/or motor vehicles on the road has increased steadily, so have reports of close calls or, even worse, collisions involving e-scooters or other PEVs — including electric skateboards, hoverboards and unicycles — being operated imprudently and at unsafe speeds.

Traffic laws urgently need to be updated to govern the use of these conveyances, which up until now have remained in a regulatory grey area that has allowed PEVs to operate largely without guidelines and outside conventional avenues of traffic-safety enforcement. Accordingly, updates regarding PEV use will be included in the Highway Traffic Act in 2027.

The new legislation will govern such areas as mandatory helmet use, age restrictions, where PEVs can lawfully operate and the maximum speed at which they can travel (25 km/h). The aim of the new law, according to the province’s website, is “to help keep Manitobans safe when sharing roads, paths, and other public spaces.”

Don’t feel compelled to limit your romantic options

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My love life is strange right now. I went from having no boyfriend to having two I’m seeing, and a third I’m talking to on the phone at night. He’s just sniffing around, but lots of fun!

I met the first two on chats, and had lunches and dinners with them, and I’ve even gone out to a movie with one. I’m not enamoured with either, but I’ve never had so many laughs!

The third guy is all about sex, and so far we’ve only interacted by phone. And (blush!) we’ve had a lot of phone sex. That guy is definitely single and is dying to meet me. Do I have to actually meet him? He keeps sending me his pictures and he’s a cutie, alright.

I think I like keeping it on the phone, but that might be insulting to tell him. What do you think about all this?
