ZIBEL, Croatia – Canada’s Keegan Messing won the gold medal Saturday at figure skating’s Zagreb Golden Spin.

Messing, who lives in Girdwood, Alaska but has dual citizenship, was first in the men’s short program Thursday and fifth in a clean free skate. He had a total of 255.07 points to finish ahead of Andrei Mozalev of Russia (252.15) and American Jimmy Ma (250.97).

‘’It was a fantastic week, I’m confident and more motivated than ever.’’ said Messing. ‘’We’re going home happy. The season started slow, and it is still not perfect but know we’re on the up and up and hopefully towards the Olympic Games.’’

Conrad Orzel of Woodbridge, Ont., was 10th and Joseph Phan of Laval, Que., was 16th.

The ISU Challenger Series circuit event was a tuneup for the Canadian championships and Olympic trials next month in Ottawa.
