Golf Manitoba season tees off with match-play championship
5 minute read Wednesday, May. 31, 2023Addison Kartusch stood on the opening tee at the Manitoba junior women’s golf championship nearly a year ago in search of a breakthrough performance. And shine she did, winning the title by 13 strokes at St. Charles Country Club, her home course.
What a summer it turned out to be for the Winnipeg teen.
After a top-five finish in the provincial women’s amateur at Granite Hills and a victory at the junior championship, Kartusch, 16, was invited to Golf Canada’s NextGen Selection Camp in Caledon, Ont., then placed in the top-30 at the Canadian junior, and finally, represented Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games in Ontario’s Niagara Region.
She capped a fabulous 2022 season by making a verbal commitment to attend Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, an NCAA Division 1 program, in the fall of 2024.

2 minute read Preview Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022GRAND BAIE, Mauritius (AP) — French golfer Antoine Rozner produced a brilliant burst of scoring on the front nine on Sunday to win the Mauritius Open by five shots and become a three-time European tour champion.
Rozner, who started the final round with a two-shot lead, extended his advantage to five after carding an eagle and three birdies over the first nine holes.
Despite breezy conditions at Mont Choisy Le Golf, he held his own over the back nine in making one birdie and one bogey to sign for a 5-under 67, finish the tournament on 19-under 269 and erase the memory of his defeat to Rasmus Hojgaard in a play-off at this event three years ago.
Rozner's previous European tour titles came in Dubai in 2020 and Qatar in 2021.

1 minute read Preview Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022GRAND BAIE, Mauritius (AP) — French golfer Antoine Rozner has a two-shot lead going into the last round of the Mauritius Open.
Rozner carded a 4-under 68 in the third round to move to 14 under par overall on Saturday. Countryman Julien Brun was alone in second after a 67.
After starting with bogeys on the first and second holes and losing his overnight lead, Rozner regained it after seven birdies and one more bogey in breezy conditions at Mont Choisy Le Golf.
“I feel like I missed a lot of opportunities but I still shot 4 under, so in those conditions it's pretty good,” he said. “That helps me for the confidence and hopefully I can use that for tomorrow.”

2 minute read Preview Friday, Dec. 16, 2022GRAND BAIE, Mauritius (AP) — Antoine Rozner and Alfredo Garcia-Heredia credited island vibes after they moved into a tie for the lead with Sami Valimaki at the Mauritius Open on Friday.
Rozner shot an 8-under 64 to join Garcia-Heredia and Valimaki in a one-stroke lead — at 10-under 134 overall — after two rounds at Mont Choisy Le Golf on the Indian Ocean island.
“I like the place I think,” said Rozner, a 29-year-old Frenchman who was a runner-up to Rasmus Højgaard after a three-way playoff in 2019, the last time the tournament was held. “Once you’re off the course, you’re completely disconnected. ... That suits me well. My girlfriend is here. It’s a lot of fun for us.”
Garcia-Heredia, a 40-year-old Spaniard in search of his first European Tour title, made seven birdies and one bogey in his 66.

Valimaki's 10 birdies included two runs of four in a row and stellar putting.
“I feel like I found a rhythm and a speed for the greens and that was the key for the day,” said Valimaki, who is seeking his second European Tour title.

Ryan Palmer and Charley Hoffman each missed birdie putts from about 12 feet at Tiburon Golf Club that would have forced a playoff. They had a 65.
Theegala was coming off a strong PGA Tour rookie season in which he reached the Tour Championship and twice had chances to win going to the final hole of tournaments.
Hoge, who won his first PGA Tour title at Pebble Beach in February, carried much of the load early when Theegala pulled a muscle in his left side on the first hole. By the end of the day, Theegala said it felt better and he was able to take fuller swings.

Strydom made four birdies in his first five holes after the turn to seize the outright lead and he finished with a 3-under 69 for 18 under par overall at Leopard Creek Country Club.
“It's good. It's my favorite place,” Strydom said. "I'm just happy."
The 37-year-old South African won from Spain's Adrian Otaegui, who closed with a 68. England's Laurie Canter was third, another stroke behind, after a superb final-round 64.

Teammates for the first time, Hoffman and Palmer were at 26-under 118. That broke the record by one shot previously shared by Harris English and Matt Kuchar in 2020 and Jason Day and Cameron Tringale in 2014.
Hoffman and Palmer led by two shots over Tom Hoge and Sahith Theegala, both playing the unofficial event for the first time. They combined for a 60 at Tiburon Golf Club.
In modified alternate shot, both players hit tee shots and then they alternate shots the rest of the way. The final round will be fourballs.
Strydom equals course record to share lead at Alfred Dunhill
1 minute read Preview Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Ockie Strydom carded a 63 to equal the course record set by Scott Jamieson a day earlier and join the Scottish player in a share of the lead after three rounds of the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Saturday.
Home player Strydom made a late bogey on No. 16 to miss setting a new course record at Leopard Creek but his round still contained eight birdies and an eagle to take him to 15 under par overall and level with Jamieson.
Jamieson started slowly, mixing two birdies with three bogeys on the front nine. He bounced back with three straight birdies coming home for a 2-under 70 to stay in contention.
Strydom and Jamieson are two shots clear of South African pair Oliver Bekker and Dean Burmester and Englishman Dale Whitnell.
Hoffman, Palmer lead QBE Shootout with a 56 in a scramble
2 minute read Preview Friday, Dec. 9, 2022NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Charley Hoffman and Ryan Palmer are making their 10th appearance in the QBE Shootout. Friday was their first time as partners, and they posted a 16-under 56 in a scramble format for a two-shot lead.
They combined for 10 birdies and three eagles at Tiburon Golf Club and missed the tournament record for the scramble format by one shot. Palmer set that record in 2019 when Harold Varner III was his partner.
“Ryan told me at the beginning of the week we need to tie his record of 17 under,” Hoffman said. “All in all, we put ourselves in great positions to make birdies. I would say very low stress all day long.”
Two pairs of Presidents Cup teammates — Max Homa and Kevin Kisner for the U.S., Corey Conners and K.H. Lee for the Internationals — were at 58.
Jamieson’s record 63 gives him 3-shot lead in South Africa
2 minute read Preview Friday, Dec. 9, 2022MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Scott Jamieson carded a course-record 63 and earned a three-shot lead of the Alfred Dunhill Championship going into the weekend on Friday.
Jamieson made nine birdies in a bogey-free second round at Leopard Creek Country Club.
The Scot hit four successive birdies on the front nine and three straight on the way home to reach 13 under par in the European tour event. However, his best shot was probably a par save on the 16th when he got up and down from a bunker and stayed two ahead of the pack.
“Going bogey-free is always a nice feeling," Jamieson said. “I holed some crucial par putts at times, which helped to keep the momentum on my side.”
Burmester takes early lead at Alfred Dunhill in South Africa
2 minute read Preview Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Dean Burmester made six birdies on the back nine to complete his 7-under 65 for a one-shot lead at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Thursday.
The 33-year-old South African, looking for his third European tour title, had managed just two birdies and a bogey by the midway point of his opening round at Leopard Creek.
“What a back nine, some of the best I've played in a little while so I'm happy to do that,” said Burmester, who is ranked 58th.
Lukas Nemecz is one shot back after his starting his round with three consecutive birdies. The Austrian added four more birdies and a bogey in his 66.
