Golf Manitoba season tees off with match-play championship

Joshua Frey-Sam 5 minute read Wednesday, May. 31, 2023

Addison Kartusch stood on the opening tee at the Manitoba junior women’s golf championship nearly a year ago in search of a breakthrough performance. And shine she did, winning the title by 13 strokes at St. Charles Country Club, her home course.

What a summer it turned out to be for the Winnipeg teen.

After a top-five finish in the provincial women’s amateur at Granite Hills and a victory at the junior championship, Kartusch, 16, was invited to Golf Canada’s NextGen Selection Camp in Caledon, Ont., then placed in the top-30 at the Canadian junior, and finally, represented Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games in Ontario’s Niagara Region.

She capped a fabulous 2022 season by making a verbal commitment to attend Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, an NCAA Division 1 program, in the fall of 2024.

Stodgy, staid old golf is changing

Cool and cloudy spring weather made for a less than ideal golf day, yet there were Tyler Chutskoff and his buddies teeing it up recently at Shooters Family Golf Course for their first round of the year — their favourite tunes blaring from the golf cart.

As Chutskoff put it, the brisk conditions were nothing a few beverages couldn’t fix. That, along with a few laughs and music — which has become as essential to the group’s outings as the clubs in their bags — certainly helped warm the group’s spirits.

“Someone’s always bringing a speaker to play music, just so it gives us something else to listen to,” said Chutskoff, a 25-year-old university student. “And honestly, it just helps you focus and stay calm and not overthink shots — doesn’t give you a chance to get in your head.

“We were just playing to have fun, catch up and chat. I don’t really care about the score, my scorecard is full of snowmen and sevens,” he added, with a laugh.

Manitoba’s premier pro golfer is ahead of the pack with just one round remaining at a DP World Tour event.

Aaron Cockerill of Stony Mountain leads the 2023 ISPA Handa Championship by one shot after 54 holes, firing a brilliant 6-under 64 Saturday at a course in Omitama, Japan.

Cockerill began the third round with a hat-trick of birdies and made four more along the way, bogeying only the 15th, and made pars on the final three holes to finish -13.

“Dream start,” he told reporters. “An awesome start and played steady the rest of the way, but overall a very good day. I feel really good. This is the best I’ve hit the ball in a long time and it’s required out here, with the rough being up and it’s firm.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Vijay Singh and his son finally cashed in on their 16th try at the PNC Championship. For Tiger Woods, he happily settled for another great week with his son in the one tournament where no one has a bad time.

“It was great being with Dad after working so hard to get here — for me school, and him just the injury,” 13-year-old Charlie Woods said. “Being out there with a great atmosphere and everyone being out there, it was awesome.”

It felt even better for Singh, the three-time major champion who first played the PNC Championship in 2003 when his son, Qass, was 13. Singh all but sealed it with a 6-foot birdie putt for a 59 in the scramble format, becoming the first team in tournament history to post a sub-60 score in both rounds.

They finished at 26-under 118 and won by two shots over defending champions John Daly and his son and 2020 winners Justin Thomas and his father.

GRAND BAIE, Mauritius (AP) — French golfer Antoine Rozner produced a brilliant burst of scoring on the front nine on Sunday to win the Mauritius Open by five shots and become a three-time European tour champion.

Rozner, who started the final round with a two-shot lead, extended his advantage to five after carding an eagle and three birdies over the first nine holes.

Despite breezy conditions at Mont Choisy Le Golf, he held his own over the back nine in making one birdie and one bogey to sign for a 5-under 67, finish the tournament on 19-under 269 and erase the memory of his defeat to Rasmus Hojgaard in a play-off at this event three years ago.

Rozner's previous European tour titles came in Dubai in 2020 and Qatar in 2021.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods and 13-year-old son Charlie weren't about to let a bad foot and a bum ankle keep them from playing together in the PNC Championship. The way they played Saturday, they might even be able to win it.

The partnership Woods referred to as “Team Ice Bath” because of their injuries finished with a 13-under 59 in the scramble format, two shots behind Justin Thomas and his father, club professional Mike Thomas.

Team Thomas won the championship belt two years ago, when Woods first introduced Charlie to a national television audience at the PNC Championship.

“They rubbed it in our face over Christmas dinner. They are in a great position to possibly do it again on Christmas dinner,” Woods said. “But we are going to have a little something to say about that.”

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods and his 13-year-old son shared something else in common Friday in the PNC Championship. Both were limping.

Only one of them was in a cart.

“His ankle is not exactly ... well, it's better than mine,” Woods said, referring to son Charlie rolling his ankle and hobbling along during the pro-am. “It's just the way it goes, just kind of bad timing on it. But we'll be ready come game time tomorrow.”

This is one tournament Woods — Tiger or Charlie — was not about to miss. That starts with the father, who shattered his right leg in a February 2021 car crash in Los Angeles and now has plantar fasciitis in his right foot that forced him to withdraw from his Hero World Challenge two weeks ago.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive hired to be the chief operating officer of LIV Golf has resigned after one year as the Saudi-backed rival circuit moves toward a league format, The New York Times reported.

Atul Khosla was expected to lead LIV Golf into its franchise model of 12 four-man teams in which players and the LIV Golf League would have equity.

Players and agents were told earlier this week Khosla intended to step down. LIV commissioner Greg Norman confirmed the news Friday in a statement to The Times.

“At the conclusion of LIV’s successful inaugural season, Atul Khosla decided to move on,” Norman said. “We respect A.K. and his personal decision.”

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Twenty years have passed since Padraig Harrington first faced Tiger Woods on the weekend at a major, and the Irishman has kept a close watch ever since.

He doesn't think Woods is finished. Harrington believes Woods can win another major if he can just get to the final nine holes.

“You'd never run Tiger off,” Harrington said, drawing from the two hours he watched Woods play in a 10-hole made-for-TV exhibition last weekend. “But I actually think he might be ... in a better place than I had thought.”

Never mind that the 15-time major champion turns 47 at the end of the month, or that Woods has had as many — if not more — surgeries than he has won majors.

Szeryk qualified for her second season on the top women's golf circuit on Sunday, finished the Q-Series tied for 17th at 17-under par to earn her LPGA Tour card for 2023. The 26-year-old Szeryk said that she was ready for some well-earned down time after the gruelling eight-round event at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama over two weeks.

"I'm not bringing my golf clubs, not doing any golf," said Szeryk, who is based in Dallas. "I'll just be reflecting on the past year and getting some rest for my mind, body and everything.

"Then in the new year I'll start practising again and start being more intense and just ramping up the practice, making sure that I'm really ready for the new season."

Hal Sutton once went into a slump so severe he was embarrassed to be on the range next to the best players. When he finally got back on track, there was a time he was worried about leaving his clubs in the closet for too long in case his game left him.

Max Homa can appreciate the feeling. He emerged from a terrible slump, even though it didn’t last as long as Sutton’s, nor did he fall as far.

“I would say every day that I take a break, I get nervous that it’s going to go away,” Homa said. “But that’s what you have a good team for. That’s why you surround yourself with great people.”

That's not to confuse nervousness with panic. For Homa, there is a confidence that comes from the work he put in to get to this point — four wins in the last two years, a 4-0 record in his Presidents Cup debut and No. 17 in the world ranking.

One swing can go a long way, whether the shot ends up in the water, on the green or in the hole.

One swing cost Mito Pereira his first major championship. It validated the rise of Tom Kim. And for Jordan Spieth, it had observers on the edge of their seats as he stood on the edge of a cliff.

What follows is a year in review on the PGA Tour based on significant shots from all 14 clubs in the bag.

DRIVER: Mito Pereira came to the 18th hole at Southern Hills with a one-shot lead in the PGA Championship, a chance for the Chilean to win his first major and give South America the career Grand Slam. A quick swing sent his drive into the creek, the start of a meltdown that led to double bogey. Justin Thomas went on to beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff.

“Ryan told me at the beginning of the week we need to tie his record of 17 under,” Hoffman said. “All in all, we put ourselves in great positions to make birdies. I would say very low stress all day long.”

Two pairs of Presidents Cup teammates — Max Homa and Kevin Kisner for the U.S., Corey Conners and K.H. Lee for the Internationals — were at 58.

MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Scott Jamieson carded a course-record 63 and earned a three-shot lead of the Alfred Dunhill Championship going into the weekend on Friday.

Jamieson made nine birdies in a bogey-free second round at Leopard Creek Country Club.

The Scot hit four successive birdies on the front nine and three straight on the way home to reach 13 under par in the European tour event. However, his best shot was probably a par save on the 16th when he got up and down from a bunker and stayed two ahead of the pack.

“Going bogey-free is always a nice feeling," Jamieson said. “I holed some crucial par putts at times, which helped to keep the momentum on my side.”

MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Dean Burmester made six birdies on the back nine to complete his 7-under 65 for a one-shot lead at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Thursday.

The 33-year-old South African, looking for his third European tour title, had managed just two birdies and a bogey by the midway point of his opening round at Leopard Creek.

“What a back nine, some of the best I've played in a little while so I'm happy to do that,” said Burmester, who is ranked 58th.

Lukas Nemecz is one shot back after his starting his round with three consecutive birdies. The Austrian added four more birdies and a bogey in his 66.
