The Winnipeg Goldeyes improved to 6-7 on the season Thursday as they split the last two games in their series with the Milwaukee Milkmen.
The Fish’s seven-run third inning Wednesday lifted them past the Milkmen (5-6) with an 11-6 win at Blue Cross Park, the Goldeyes’ third consecutive win.
Milwaukee opened the scoring with a single in the top of the first inning, before Winnipeg responded to tie the game in the second, with Gustavo Sosa’s single bringing home Tanner O’Tremba.
The game broke open in the bottom of the third with seven different Goldeyes’ players scoring for the home side.
The Fish added onto their lead in the fourth to bring their run tally to 11, while the Milkmen chipped away at the lead in the sixth and ninth innings.
Winnipeg would drop Thursday’s matinee 7-4, with Milwaukee avoiding the series sweep.
The Fish opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Matthew Warkentin’s single brought home Evan Alexander. The Milkmen answered with a four-run second inning, taking a 4-1 lead.
The Goldeyes managed to tie the game in the bottom of the second, with O’Tremba hitting his second home run of the season to square up the score. However, Milwaukee took the lead in the fifth and padded it in the seventh.
Despite the Fish bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, O’Tremba would strike out swinging.
Winnipeg starts their next series tonight, hosting the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Blue Cross Park with the first pitch schedule for 7 p.m.
Right-hander Ryder Yakel (0-0, 3.11 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the Fish, while the RailCats are expected to start left-hander Chris Erwin (0-2, 12.46 ERA).
