There’s a bumper crop of local contemporary dance at this year’s fringe. Fresh is less accessible than Shades at the same venue, is performed by senior students rather than grads of the School of Contemporary Dancers, and is self-choreographed by its seven performers, while Shades has professional choreography.

Nonetheless, Fresh is a diverse, well-danced program that demonstrates strong musicality. One highlight is When it was…, a duet danced to rootsy music in jeans and T-shirts that captures a relationship’s arc. Another is Psyche, a moving solo set to ethereal Renaissance voices.

The show runs 60 minutes (not 75 as billed). The last of eight pieces, a gumboot stomp, is an impressive crowd-pleaser but a questionable fit with the overall program. The arty experimental video interludes by Erin Buelow, which layer dreamy footage of the dancers with foliage, progress from fresh to hypnotic to tedious.

This is Nova Dance Collective’s premiere of FRESH and their first at the Fringe. The show consists of a collection of nine different pieces choreographed and performed by members of the collective. Audience members can expect a visual feast of contemporary dances, projections and fresh, local talent.
