BRANDON — Jim McCrae, a former attorney general of Manitoba, has registered to run for a seat on the Brandon School Division board of trustees.
McCrae, 77, had a long political career as a Tory cabinet minister and before that, a Brandon city councillor.
He said his decades of public service and education experience have prepared him to contribute to the governance of the school division.
“My last cabinet position was as minister of education and training. I travelled extensively in Manitoba and met with many teachers and others involved with the education of our children,” McCrae told the Brandon Sun.

Winnipeggers were keen to buy legalized cannabis Wednesday online and in line.
Cannabis prohibition in Canada ended as of Wednesday morning, but the stigma around using marijuana persisted for many people lined up outside Winnipeg's new, legal cannabis stores on a brisk, clear day.
Shoppers of all ages tended to be shy about giving their names to inquiring reporters. But when the doors finally opened, those Manitobans ran the gauntlet of cameras for their first chance to buy weed without breaking the law.
Here's what happened on Wednesday at four legal cannabis outlets across the city.
The Winnipeg constituency of Assiniboia was too close to call Tuesday, with the NDP candidate leading over the incumbent Tory minister of seniors and long-term care.
At 11:15 p.m., Elections Manitoba, reporting just seven of 18 polls, had the NDP’s Nellie Kennedy with a 562-vote lead over Progressive Conservative incumbent Scott Johnston in the swing riding on the western edge of the city.
Losing the seat would be a blow for the Tories, but it would be a moral, rather than a functional, one. A win for the PC incumbent would do little to dent the NDP’s majority victory. Liberal Charles Ward was running a distant third.
A NDP win would be a reversal. In the 2016 and 2019 elections, the party lost Assiniboia to the PCs by roughly 16- and nine-point margins, respectively. Johnston won with 44 per cent of the vote in 2019.
