TOKYO (AP) — Russian archer Svetlana Gomboeva lost consciousness during a competition at the Tokyo Olympics in intense heat Friday.
Gomboeva collapsed shortly after completing the qualifying round and was attended by medical staff, coach Stanislav Popov said in comments published by the Russian Olympic Committee.
"It's the first time that I remember something like this happening," he said. "In Vladivostok, where we were training before this, the weather was similar. But the humidity here had an influence.”
Temperatures in Tokyo were above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). The heat in Tokyo’s summer months already prompted organizers to move the marathons and race-walking events to the cooler city of Sapporo.
Glen Murray is endorsing Winnipeg mayoral candidate Noah Redden in Wednesday’s civic election, a news release issued by Redden’s camp says.
Murray — who was the city’s mayor from 1998 to 2004 and came second in the 2022 mayoral race, narrowly losing to Scott Gillingham — endorsed the progressive 27-year-old on Tuesday morning, a day before voters go to the polls.
“While other candidates are busy tearing each other down, Noah Redden is focused on building our city up,” Murray said in a news release distributed by Redden’s team. “At a time when Winnipeg desperately needs fresh thinking, practical solutions and a renewed sense of possibility, Noah stands out as a candidate who understands how great cities work — and, more importantly, how to make them work better for everyone.”
Murray called Redden’s platform a “thoughtful and pragmatic plan” to restore city neighbourhoods, boost the economy and modernize infrastructure.

As she neared the end, she couldn't see properly and thought “why did they move the finish line?”
Her legs knew right where it was.
Deep into her sixth race across three distances that covered more than 24 kilometers on Tokyo's sweltering Olympic track, Hassan burst past world-record holder Letesenbet Gidey to win the 10,000-meter gold on Saturday.
Winnipeg is literally facing dark times, officials involved in budget presentations revealed Wednesday at city hall.
The public works director said a proposed freeze on the street lighting budget means the City of Winnipeg will have to turn off an increasing number of lights over the next four years.
Winnipeg Transit said an imposed two per cent cap on its budget will mean the elimination of dozens of positions and the low-income bus pass might never see the light of day, along with a host of service cuts.
The budget prospects left Coun. Matt Allard, chairman of the public works committee and a public transit advocate, looking rattled and at a loss to explain how city hall can dig its way out of the financial situation.

The first two procedures are part of standard physician education. But for many U.S. medical school students and residents who want to learn about abortions, options are scarce.
And new restrictions are piling up: Within the past year, bills or laws seeking to limit abortion education have been proposed or enacted in at least eight states. The changes are coming from abortion opponents emboldened by new limits on the procedure itself, as well as a pending Supreme Court decision that could upend the landmark Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
“It’s quite terrifying what’s going on,” said Ian Peake, a third-year medical student in Oklahoma, where the governor on April 12 signed a measure outlawing most abortions.
