Another Slurpee stop in the city will soon be no more.

The 7-Eleven at the corner of St. Mary’s and St. Michael’s roads is set to close in the coming months as a conditional sale on the building is already in place.

It’s one of at least 10 closures of the convenience store giant in Winnipeg over the past several years.

The 7-Eleven at 1124 St. Mary’s Rd. can be seen with a massive “for sale” sign out front on Thursday. It’s one of at least 10 convenience store locations to close in recent months.

“It’s just another example of conveniences falling by the wayside,” said Ryan Cheyne, who was walking by the store Thursday.

“You see them disappearing more and more as time goes on,” he said. “I think it’s unfortunate for the neighbourhood.”

On Wednesday, the Free Press reported the 7-Eleven on Henderson Highway would also be closing.

Real estate agent Jared Kushner, of ICI Properties, is handling the sale of both properties.

He said the interest in the locations has been “significant,” with conditional buyers lined up and plans for new businesses underway.

Officials with 7-Eleven did not respond to an interview request Thursday.

The multinational chain said previously the decision to “close a number of non-core assets” is part of a new long-term growth strategy.

“It’s not unique to Winnipeg,” said Coun. Chris Sigurdson (St. Vital), noting people in the ward have been talking about the shutdown.

“I remember shopping there as a little kid,” he said. “It certainly will be a loss.”

The closures of other 7-Eleven locations in Winnipeg have been, in part, attributed to crime, but Sigurdson said numerous factors are at play.

“This may be an issue of just changing buying habits, changing demographics,” he said.

The newly elected councillor said he’s hopeful other businesses in the area will fill the gap.

“We also have a number of small businesses and convenience stores in the area as well that can take up the slack,” Sigurdson said.
