An official with a Winnipeg cab company said one of its drivers died in a collision on Salter Street Wednesday morning.

“It looks like it was a T-bone accident,” said Ram Valluru, general manager of Duffy’s Taxi, about the 6:30 a.m. collision between the cabbie and another vehicle. Traffic was redirected between Aberdeen and Redwood streets for several hours as police investigated.

He said his driver, a man in his late 40s, has a wife and two teenage children. His death has saddened his co-workers.

The collision happened on Salter Street Wednesday morning.

“I visited their house today to pass along my condolences,” Valluru said. “I know him very well, this driver.”

Valluru said the driver had worked at the company for almost a decade. He described him as respectful, polite and professional.

“It’s shocking,” Valluru said. “It’s definitely a very big loss for Duffy’s Taxi.”

The Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service have released few details about the collision.

In a social media post, police confirmed officers were on scene for “a motor vehicle collision investigation.”

Taxi logs show the cab involved in the crash had picked up three passengers from an address on the 500 block of Boyd Avenue at 6:19 a.m.

Valluru said shortly after the cab driver stopped responding, another cabbie went to the location and reported that only the passengers in the cab remained on scene. The occupants of the other vehicle had fled.

Police said the intersection reopened at 2 p.m.
