The Winnipeg High School Hockey League is investigating a brawl that occurred earlier this week after a game between the Warren Wildcats and the Powerview/Sagkeeng Wild at the Sagkeeng Arena Complex.

Dana Gordon, president of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League, confirmed an investigation is ongoing and that no comment would be provided until the probe has been completed.

A video that circulated on social media shows during the handshakes at the end of the game, words were exchanged between players on opposing teams and a fight broke out.

Things quickly escalated into multiple scraps on the ice and while officials attempted to get the situation under control, it took several minutes before order was restored.

Once cooler heads prevailed, the teams made their way off the ice to their respective dressing rooms, but not before several fans of both teams exchanged words.

The video shows someone in the stands took a swing at one of the players.

Michelle Lissel, spokesperson for the RCMP, confirmed that on Tuesday at approximately 5:45 p.m., RCMP were on the scene at Sagkeeng Arena Complex after a report of a disturbance.

Officers provided an escort for the visiting team to their bus, but the officers on scene deemed nothing criminal in nature occurred, thus no charges have been laid.

That doesn’t mean players on both teams will avoid further discipline as fighting majors carry a stiff penalty in the WHSHL, especially when they occur late in a game or after one has been concluded.

According to the WHSHL constitution, the first fight for a player in the league results in a two-game suspension, though that number increases to three games if it occurs in the final 10 minutes of a game.

Getting involved in a second fight carries a four-game ban, while a third includes being suspended for the remainder of the season along with an indefinite suspension that could carry over into the following campaign.

The Warren Wildcats are one of the top teams in the Price Division, sitting second with a record of 20-3-0-1 while the Wild are seventh of 12 teams with a record of 13-10-1.
