Environment Canada has lifted its severe weather warnings in southern Manitoba now that the worst of the Colorado low is out of the way in that region.

Snowfall warnings remain in place for parts of central and northern Manitoba, including Swan River, Grand Rapids, Poplar River and Oxford House.

Volunteers reported unconfirmed snowfall totals of 60 centimetres in Killarney as of Thursday morning, the national forecaster said.

Other totals include 45 cm in Selkirk, 38 in St. Andrews, 35 in Morden and 32 in Sandy Hook.

Winnipeg had received between 20 and 30 cm.

The worst of the storm sweeping across southern Manitoba is over — but the snowfall isn’t finished just yet.

“Most of the energy of the storm has now moved off into Ontario,” Terri Lang, a meteorologist for Environment Canada, said this morning. “We’re in what we call the backwash of the storm.”

Environment Canada predicts another 5 cm to 10 cm will likely fall throughout the southern part of the province before the system moves on. Southwestern Manitoba will likely receive the lightest amount.

Volunteers in Winnipeg recorded snow accumulation averages ranging from 21 cm to 25 cm on the high end, with reports as low as 6 cm to 14 cm.

The southwestern part of the province has been the hardest hit, with Portage la Prairie at 28 cm, Boissevain at 21 cm, Oak River at 18 cm and High Bluff at 16 cm. There is currently no reliable snow accumulation data for Brandon, Environment Canada said.

Environment Canada’s measurements were taken by volunteers for the Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Canada, a network of individuals and groups who provide daily online updates.

“We ask people to do an average, because it’s notoriously difficult to measure snow in a blizzard… some places are scoured clean, and others have 10-foot drifts,” Lang said.

North of Winnipeg, Interlake communities of Argyle and Woodlands saw 26 cm and 13 cm, respectively. East of Winnipeg, Pinawa recorded 29 cm. The snow to the south of Winnipeg was relatively light, with Steinbach reporting 8 cm, St-Pierre-Jolys reporting 9 cm and Morris reporting 7 cm.

Winter storm warnings are still in place for all of southern Manitoba, as high winds continue to cause low visibility. Environment Canada expects northerly winds of 30 km/h to 40 km/h, with gusts reaching 50 km/h to 60 km/h, throughout today in much of southern Manitoba.

The winds will taper off throughout the evening into Friday.

9:30 a.m.

Two closed Manitoba highways have since reopened.

Highway 6 from the Perimeter Highway to St. Laurent and Highway 7 from the Perimeter to Komarno are now open.

Highway 6 remains closed from St. Laurent to Lundar.

There’s more shovelling in store for you today after snow fell overnight.

A winter storm warning remains in effect, with another 5 to 10 centimetres of snow expected in the Red River Valley today, including Winnipeg, Environment Canada said shortly after 4:30 a.m.

Another 2 cm of snow is forecast for Winnipeg tonight.

Today’s forecast includes blowing snow, a low of -8 C tonight, wind chill as low as -19 and wind from the north at 40 km/h gusting to 60.

Crews are busy clearing city streets, sidewalks and active transportation paths this morning, the City of Winnipeg tweeted.

“Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and stay back from heavy equipment working,” the city tweeted.

CAA Manitoba said it received only 106 calls throughout the province on Wednesday, compared with the average of about 400.

“It appears Manitobans heeded the warnings about the blizzard and chose to stay home when they could. We hope Manitobans continue to do so and stay safe and warm over the next few days,” CAA said in a news release Thursday morning.

“A reminder to our members to not drive on closed roads; we cannot send our drivers out on closed roads to help stranded people.”

Canada trounces France 10-2 in Olympic men’s hockey

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026

MILAN — Bring on the elimination games.

An epic mismatch on paper proved to be just that on the ice Sunday afternoon, as Canada routed France 10-2 to finish round-robin play with a perfect 3-0 record.

File this one under the category of “necessary evil.”

Unfortunately for France, Canada had every incentive not only to win, but to fill the net as much as possible, based on the tie-breaking procedures used by the International Ice Hockey Federation at the Winter Olympics. And so the star-studded squad kept coming, foot firmly on the gas even when the final result was crystal clear.

Community Review shuttered in local ad flyer delivery shift

Gabrielle Piché 5 minute read Yesterday at 8:48 PM CDT

The Free Press’s parent company is shuttering its weekly community paper and flyer distribution in what some expect to be a wave of closures to hit the Canadian newspaper industry.

As of July 24, the Free Press will no longer deliver flyer inserts to 200,000 Manitoba households and mark the last edition of the Free Press Community Review.

Layoffs are happening this week and next. FP Newspapers chief executive officer Mike Power didn’t provide a final number Monday, but said the layoffs will impact various departments.

The company’s other newspapers — Free Press, Brandon Sun and Carillon — will continue production as normal. Layoffs won’t impact those newsrooms.

Staying with retired pop not your usual roomie setup

Miss Lonelyhearts 4 minute read Monday, Oct. 2, 2023

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I just moved back in with my dad after my recent divorce. Things have been tough from Day 1, with the old coot! I’m 37, with one child, who lives with his mom. I work from “home” in Dad’s basement, and don’t start until 9 a.m. Dad is retired army, and up at 6 a.m. every day — either cleaning, repairing stuff or watching TV full-blast!

I recognize I’m in his house now, and he’s lived here for many years, with his own rules. I just want to find some compromise, but he isn’t open to it. He thinks I’m a failure for getting divorced, despite him being divorced as well. How do you make it work living with a parent/roommate later in life?

— Divorced Dad Dilemma, North End

Dear Divorced Dad: Forget all the usual expectations regarding this unusual housemate situation, and treat Dad like a loud neighbour you don’t want to fight with. Buy a comfortable headset, and block out the noise. Tell Dad in a conversational voice what you’re doing. Ask him to please phone you or send you a message if he wants to tell you something before 9 a.m.

Mom spearheads fight for rehab services

Four years ago, a car crash permanently changed Will Castor’s life.

The 28-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury that required a long recovery as he worked to relearn skills many people take for granted, such as eating, speaking and getting out of bed.

A key part of that journey was First Steps Wellness Centre, a Winnipeg rehabilitation facility, where Will worked with therapists to regain independence and connect with others facing similar challenges.

But on June 5, financial constraints forced First Steps to close, leaving families without the specialized therapy they had come to rely on.

Toys ‘R’ Us closing Polo Park store

Free Press staff 2 minute read Yesterday at 8:39 PM CDT

Embattled toy retailer Toys “R” Us is closing its store in Winnipeg’s Polo Park area.

Staff hung signs sharing the news — and advertising liquidation pricing — on Friday. The signage does not indicate when the store, located at 1445 St. Matthews Ave., will close for good.

A store manager declined to comment on Monday, directing a reporter to Toys “R” Us Canada Ltd.’s head office. The company did not respond to interview requests.

Toys “R” Us announced in January it would close its Polo Park location, but reversed course a few weeks later. The Canada-wide company has been in creditor protection since February.
