Dauphin ER reopening ‘monumental team effort’

DAUPHIN — The emergency department at Dauphin Regional Health Centre reopened Monday morning after a closure of just over two months, restoring 24-7 emergency services to Dauphin and surrounding communities.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara hailed the reopening as a major milestone.

“It’s been a monumental team effort to get to this point,” Asagwara told the Brandon Sun on Monday afternoon before embarking on a tour of the facility.

“We asked everyone to approach this as one team and that’s exactly what we’re seeing the results of now.”

City, RM of Macdonald working on fire services sharing agreement

A major blaze that caused millions of dollars of damage to businesses just outside city limits is raising questions over how far Winnipeg fire services should extend.

On June 30, flames destroyed ReGen Composites and other businesses in a McGillivray Boulevard complex in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald, just a few hundred metres outside Winnipeg.

“The line on the map for those business owners... did matter that day. But they should be really looking to their (rural municipal) government and asking those questions there,” said Coun. Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry), the chairperson of Winnipeg city council’s protection and community services committee.

While some businesses pay for Winnipeg fire services, no such agreement is in place for the RM of Macdonald or any other rural municipality, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service spokesperson Kristin Cuma said in an emailed statement.

The first day of school is a promise

This week, thousands of Manitoba students will walk through school doors carrying backpacks filled with new supplies, new hopes and, for some, new worries.

For parents and caregivers, this may be a familiar September routine — shopping for school supplies, adjusting schedules, preparing lunches and getting children ready for another year of learning.

For educators and school staff, it is the beginning of another demanding year.

But for Manitoba, this week should mean something more. It should be a renewal of our promise to every child.

But a unique program is working in Portland, Ore. and some version of that program could work in Winnipeg as well. Something that glitters may just be a small nugget of gold.
