On Oct. 17, we reviewed prices on legal cannabis stores online to see how pricing compared across Canada.

Nova Scotia prices given are based on pre-legalization estimates, because the online store in that province requires an access code which is collected in person.  (Have a spare access code? Let us know!)

Nunavut store did not appear to be operational when we last checked. Licensed retailers in Saskatchewan are allowed to sell online, but we couldn’t find a store that was doing so.  (Know of one? Let us know!)

Rock musical Rent's themes of acceptance and hope prove timeless

Frances Koncan 5 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019

When you work in show business, you know one thing’s for sure: no matter what happens, the show must go on.

There’s perhaps no better illustration of this than the musical Rent when, on the morning of its first preview, its composer Jonathan Larson died at the age of 35 of an aortic aneurysm.

What followed has become a theatre legend. With the permission of Larson’s parents, the grieving cast performed a staged reading that evening — but by the end of Act I, they couldn’t contain their energy. They rose to their feet and continued with a full performance. At the end of the curtain call, a voice rang out over the applause, shouting, “Thank you, Jonathan Larson.”

A re-imagining of Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème, Rent follows a year in the lives of seven young people as they struggle to follow their dreams in New York City’s East Village during the height of the AIDS epidemic. While the specifics of the show may not be relatable to everyone, the underlying themes of hope and love have proven to be timeless and universal.

Sisters among 137 to begin doctor journey at U of M

Nicole Buffie 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:32 PM CDT

Not everyone enters medical school with a built-in study buddy.

Sisters Maya and Dana Jalal joined 135 of their classmates to don white coats and mark the beginning of their journey through the University of Manitoba’s Max Rady College of Medicine Wednesday morning.

Maya, 22, and Dana, 21, were accepted into medical school at the same time.

“Thankfully, we both got accepted in the same area, same time. So we decided we’d rather go together than apart,” Maya said. “It’ll be nice seeing different perspectives during our studies. We are siblings, but we each have our own perspectives, our own lived experiences.”

Jeff Browaty to remain councillor in North Kildonan

Tyler Searle 2 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022

Long-standing incumbent Jeff Browaty will remain councillor of the North Kildonan ward, earning 73 per cent support.

Andrew Podolecki, Browaty’s lone challenger, was running against the councillor for the third time in the north Winnipeg ward. He finished the race a distant second with 27 per cent support, a five per cent increase from 2018's election.

Browaty has already served 16 years on council, filling roles on numerous committees, including sitting in the mayor's inner circle as a member of the executive policy committee. He is currently council’s finance chairman.

Browaty counts road maintenance as a top priority and has spoken out against imposing large tax increases. He suggests the city refocus its priorities on key municipal responsibilities; ideas he’s floated include not expanding recreational services and not spending city money on items that fall primarily under provincial jurisdiction, such as housing.

Pre-owned sets seller Romo’s Bricks seeks to click with Winnipeg’s Lego community

Aaron Epp 4 minute read Yesterday at 8:17 PM CDT

There’s no mortar in sight but there are certainly thousands of bricks at a new brick-and-mortar store in Winnipeg catering to Lego enthusiasts.

Ashton Romaniuk and Madison Froome opened Romo’s Bricks in late spring. Located at 955 Milt Stegall Dr., in the same building as CanCentral Sports Cards & Memorabilia, the store specializes in selling pre-owned Lego sets, minifigures and other Lego-related products.

“It’s something we’re both passionate about,” Froome said.

To stock the store, she and Romaniuk spent $50,000 on four large Lego collections, purchased from local collectors. Romaniuk estimates that since the store opened on June 2, inventory has grown to $250,000 worth of Lego.
