Ardern last year became just the second elected leader in modern history to give birth while holding office. Her daughter Neve is 10 months old.

Ardern on Tuesday said in a release she wished the royal family all the best and hoped to see them in New Zealand at some point.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited New Zealand in October.

On that trip, Meghan showed she was prepared to continue speaking out about feminist issues in her new role as a royal when she gave a speech congratulating New Zealand for becoming the first country to allow women to vote in 1893.

He said a baby’s birth, whether royal or otherwise, was a fantastic moment for any family.

A pair of uniformed staff members placed the framed announcement on an easel just inside the palace gates Monday afternoon, observing a long tradition hours after the new prince’s arrival was announced on social media.

The ceremonial easel carried an announcement of Prince William and Kate’s third child, Prince Louis, in April 2018. It remained there for about 24 hours.

A beaming Prince Harry says he and his wife Meghan have a healthy baby boy.

Harry says he’s “incredibly proud” of his wife after she gave birth early Monday morning. The baby weighs 7 pounds, 3 ounces, and palace officials say he was born at 5:26 a.m. Monday.

The infant, now the seventh in line to the British throne, has not yet been named.

The prince says he is “over the moon” about the birth of their first child and said more details will be shared in the coming days. He spoke Monday before TV cameras.

Officials say senior royals including Queen Elizabeth II have been informed of the birth, as has the family of his late mother, Princess Diana.

Indigenous-, newcomer-focused job fair puts opportunity in spotlight

Canadian Armed Forces pamphlets grazed the side of Serena Valiquette’s ribbon skirt, as the Grade 9 student clutched the handouts tight.

“When I get to age, I’ll probably apply,” said Serena, 14, joining pockets of students hopping from booth to booth — City of Winnipeg here, Manitoba Public Insurance there — at a job fair in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

The job seekers, present and future, were largely Indigenous and newcomers. It was the demographic organizer Clayton Sandy aimed to attract.

“We have the ability to open doors for young people,” Sandy said. “This is one of the ways we use.”

Brian Bowman wins mayoral battle

Aldo Santin and Mary Agnes Welch 6 minute read Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014

In the end, it wasn’t even close.

A mayoral race that was supposed to be a head-to-head battle between privacy lawyer Brian Bowman and former NDP MP and MLA Judy Wasylycia-Leis turned into a rout on election night. Wasylycia-Leis, the experienced politician, had held what looked like an unassailable lead for months, but Bowman, the outsider who promised Winnipeggers a better, prosperous future, chipped doggedly away at it.

“I’m excited to tell you that positive change is coming to city hall,” Bowman told roaring supporters at the Inn At The Forks after making his way into the small ballroom accompanied by his wife and two young sons.

He said he hadn’t expecting such a landslide victory, but had believed that the campaign was building momentum.

Two government bills left on table as NDP ends third year of term

Year 3 of the NDP government’s four-year mandate ended Thursday with more than 50 bills expected to become law and two that didn’t make it to the finish line.

“We’re on the final stages of passing 52 amazing bills,” government house leader Nahanni Fontaine said after the final question period of the 43rd legislature.

Most were passed before the house rose for the summer break, including getting rid of the provincial sales tax on pop, chips and packaged foods that took effect July 1. A handful of health-care bills that aim to restrict mandatory overtime, create a patient safety charter, establish nurse-to-patient ratios and do away with sick-note requirements for employees — unless they miss more than seven consecutive days or 10 in a year — were also passed.

Under rules of the legislature, the Progressive Conservatives held back three government bills until the fall session to allow for further debate before passage by the NDP majority Thursday. The most contentious was Bill 13, the Residential Tenancies Amendment Act, that aims to strengthen renter protections and increase maximum fines for landlords in breach of the act.

Kerry Gillespie - Sports Reporter, Toronto Star 7 minute read Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021

When female bobsledders pushed for an Olympic four-woman event, they got a solo discipline instead: monobob. Now they’ll race for the same number of medals as men, but with fewer sledders. Not the progress they were looking for.
