ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be aware of the limitations of the moon alert as it is taking place in your money house. Guard against temptations to shop and buy things. Be wise and restrict your spending to food and gas until after the moon alert is over. (See above.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This day might feel loosey-goosey and indecisive because the moon alert is in your sign. (“What should I do next?”) Although this promotes creativity and lighthearted socializing with others, it’s a poor time to make realistic financial decisions. Oops.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Most of the time, I believe in trusting your gut instincts. However, right now, your instincts might lead you astray because of the moon alert. Keep your wits about you. Deal with delays and goofy mistakes at work. Postpone shopping and decisions until the moon alert is over.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a lovely day to shmooz with friends and groups! You’ll also enjoy fun outings with kids, as well as sporting events. Meanwhile, for many of you, old flames are back on the scene. (This could be exciting or horrifying.) Check the moon alert. (See above.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You’re still high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. Right now however, the moon alert is taking place at the top of your chart, which means your poor decisions and choices will be public! Wait until the moon alert is over to act.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a fun day to explore your surroundings. Be a tourist in your own city. Learn something new. Go someplace you’ve never been before. Reach out and talk to neighbours as well as people from other cultures. However, don’t shop. Avoid important decisions. (See moon alert!)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day because the moon alert is taking place in the part of your chart that deals with shared property, taxes, debt, inheritances and insurance issues. All that red-tape stuff. Do your homework but take no action when it comes to financial negotiations.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Conversations with partners, spouses and close friends might feel like two ships passing in the night as the moon alert occurs directly opposite your sign. Mixed signals and misinterpretations will be classic. Above all, don’t volunteer or agree to anything important.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’ll enjoy seeing old friends and groups from your past. However, the moon alert will rob you of some of your efficiency when it comes to your job or daily tasks. Sit this one out. Do your homework and fill your databank. But don’t act.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a wonderful, creative day for you! Artists can be productive producing art. Any of you will enjoy appreciating art as well as social engagement with others, including children and sporting events. Have fun!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You will be best served relaxing at home and keeping a low profile, especially as most of this day is a moon alert. Don’t volunteer for anything within the family. Don’t agree to anything important. Just coast.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You want to get out and talk to others to share your ideas and possibly teach or persuade people of your way of thinking. However, most of this day is a moon alert. Don’t end up making a commitment you later regret.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, comedian, screenwriter John Cleese (1939) shares your birthday. You’re imaginative, whimsical, rational and practical. You express yourself immediately and passionately. This is a slower-paced year. Take time to rejuvenate your energy. Focus on business and personal relationships and make sure you hang out with people who have your back — those who are kind and helpful.

No excuse for parliamentary pause

Editorial 4 minute read Wednesday, Jun. 10, 2020

It is, by any standard one might be inclined to apply, an unexpected and unsettling turn of events.

Last fall, Canadians went to the polls and delivered a federal election result that told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in no uncertain terms that they were unhappy with his first-term performance and were putting his government on a very short leash for its second mandate.

Voters’ anger wasn’t sufficiently heated to reject the Liberals outright by installing an Andrew Scheer-led Conservative government, but the message was nonetheless clear: a minority Parliament, in which a duly chastened Mr. Trudeau would have to govern with a greater sense of collaboration and a much less imperious demeanour.

And Canada’s 43rd Parliament did — as all minority Parliaments will — begin on a much more cautious footing than had been the case with Mr. Trudeau’s previous majority government. And then ... COVID-19.

Hassan gets 3 distance medals in amazing Olympic odyssey

Gerald Imray, The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021

TOKYO (AP) — By the time she reached the 65th and final lap of her eight-day Olympic odyssey, Sifan Hassan's neck had seized up and she couldn't turn her head. She could barely breathe and she couldn't feel her arms anymore.

As she neared the end, she couldn't see properly and thought “why did they move the finish line?”

Her legs knew right where it was.

Deep into her sixth race across three distances that covered more than 24 kilometers on Tokyo's sweltering Olympic track, Hassan burst past world-record holder Letesenbet Gidey to win the 10,000-meter gold on Saturday.

Witness tip leads to arson suspect’s arrest in Point Douglas warehouse blaze

Erik Pindera and Gabrielle Piché 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 29, 2021

A 21-year-old woman is accused of lighting a fire at a Point Douglas warehouse Tuesday, which was fuelled by chemicals and so intense that lights and decals on fire trucks melted.

Two firefighters were hurt as they fought the flames at Gateway Industries at 2 Point Douglas Ave., south of the Louise Bridge, which was called in Tuesday morning.

While officers controlled traffic on Higgins Avenue, a witness gave a description of the suspect and said she appeared to be headed over the bridge.

Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said the witness followed the suspect for a short period. Soon after, officers took the suspect into custody in Elmwood, across the bridge.

Former mayor Murray endorses Redden in civic elction

Free Press staff 3 minute read 10:09 AM CDT

Glen Murray is endorsing Winnipeg mayoral candidate Noah Redden in Wednesday’s civic election, a news release issued by Redden’s camp says.

Murray — who was the city’s mayor from 1998 to 2004 and came second in the 2022 mayoral race, narrowly losing to Scott Gillingham — endorsed the progressive 27-year-old on Tuesday morning, a day before voters go to the polls.

“While other candidates are busy tearing each other down, Noah Redden is focused on building our city up,” Murray said in a news release distributed by Redden’s team. “At a time when Winnipeg desperately needs fresh thinking, practical solutions and a renewed sense of possibility, Noah stands out as a candidate who understands how great cities work — and, more importantly, how to make them work better for everyone.”

Murray called Redden’s platform a “thoughtful and pragmatic plan” to restore city neighbourhoods, boost the economy and modernize infrastructure.

Marta Bassino wins World Cup giant slalom; Shiffrin 4th

The Associated Press 2 minute read Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020

COURCHEVEL, France - Marta Bassino won her second straight World Cup giant slalom of the season on Saturday, and Mikaela Shiffrin placed fourth in her return to the event after an 11-month gap.

Bassino produced the fastest second-run time after trailing world champion Petra Vlhova the first time down in the morning.

The Italian racer finished 0.46 ahead of hard-charging Sara Hector, and 0.59 clear of Vlhova whose three-race winning streak was ended.

Valerie Grenier of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was the top Canadian on Saturday, finishing 4.83 seconds behind Bassino for 13th spot. Toronto's Ali Nullmeyer and Candace Crawford, and Mikaela Tommy of Wakefield, Que., did not qualify.

Canadian Reece Howden set to make Olympic debut

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022

Canada's Reece Howden knows that there will be a lot of pressure on him at the Beijing Olympics as ski cross's reigning Crystal Globe winner. But he also knows that he's far from Canada's only medal hope in the sport this year.

Howden earned the Crystal Globe as the overall World Cup men's ski cross champion in 2020-21 after winning four races and making it to the podium two other times. The product of Cultus Lake, B.C., said he has to focus on the one thing he can control: his skiing.

"I know that if I ski well, if I do what I'm supposed to do, I'm going to be successful. The results will come," said Howden. "I'm trying not to get too carried away in the results.

"But yeah, the pressure is there, for sure. But I'm dealing with it really well and I'm excited to see what I can do this year."
