MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions all day after 9:30 a.m. today. The moon is in Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Do your best to keep the peace at home. Parents must be patient with their kids to avoid meltdowns and hissy fits. Respect your need for more rest. If possible, take a nap. Discussions with older family members and parents will be challenging. You might say goodbye to someone.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Domestic power struggles can make this a challenging day. Please know that things look worse than they are. The best way to deal with the day’s discouraging energy is to throw yourself into a project. Whether it’s hands-on or mental work — just stay busy.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You might feel your finances look bleak. Or perhaps a purchase disappoints you? The day might be frustrating because your ability to communicate is thwarted by someone. Your efforts to talk or handle appointments and short trips might meet with opposition.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a challenging day because the moon is in your sign at odds with Saturn. Proceed cautiously even though self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy might make you hesitant to act. Dealings with VIPs, parents, bosses and the police will be challenging.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is the classic day for an emotional confrontation with someone. No matter what you do to get ahead, you might encounter some kind of opposition or a power struggle with someone. This could be discouraging. If possible, enlist the aid of someone to help you. Don’t try to go it alone.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

A friend might disappoint you, perhaps a female. Or this disappointment could occur with a group? Something going on behind the scenes is discouraging and you might not know what to do. When you are this unsure, do nothing except seek the help of someone else.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a poor day to ask for permission or approval from authority figures. Your confidence is not strong. You might feel depressed, lonely or out of touch with others. Please be aware that things look worse than they are. Avoid power struggles with friends and groups.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a poor day to deal with bosses, parents, teachers, VIPs and the police. Give these people a wide berth to avoid emotional confrontations and power struggles. You might also encounter difficulty travelling. Keep a low profile.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Avoid controversial discussions with others, especially about politics, religion and racial issues, because this day is full of angry energy and negative thinking. Children might feel like an increased responsibility. Remind yourself this is a temporary dark cloud on your horizon.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Financial disputes might occur regarding purchases, ownership of something, or in how to divide an inheritance or shared expenses. Meanwhile, discussions with partners, spouses and close friends might discourage you. Demonstrate grace under pressure.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Be patient with those who are closest to you, because everyone is prickly and short-tempered. However, some are feeling sad and lonely. (This is a challenging day.) Fortunately, you look good to others and a chance to learn or travel will work well for you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Conflict about pets or anything related to your job or health might arise. You might also be upset about the cost of something related to a social situation, sports or the care and education of kids. Be patient and loving to help make life easier for everyone.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Neve Campbell (1973) shares your birthday. You’re a strong-willed, focused, perfectionist. You take a direct and logical approach to life. This year exciting changes will give you increased personal freedom. Stay flexible. Let go of whatever impedes your growth and progress. Seek out new opportunities and be ready to act fast. Expect to travel.

Berry opens at Olympic trials: 'I want to impact the world'

Eddie Pells, The Associated Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jun. 24, 2021

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Gwen Berry raised her fist, then thumped it against her chest two times and set off on her quest for an even bigger stage to spread her message.

The hammer thrower, who forced the U.S. Olympic world into an uncomfortable conversation about raised fists, kneeling and other demonstrations at the games, finished sixth in qualifying at track and field trials Thursday. She'll be in the final Saturday competing for one of three tickets to Tokyo.

“Today means a lot to me,” said the 31-year-old mom, who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the words ‘Activist Athlete.’ “My message is very powerful. I want to impact the world.”

She's hardly the only athlete using their platform to send a message.

Hellebuyck determined to turn numbers around

Jason Bell 6 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018

HELSINKI — Connor Hellebuyck is enjoying a visit to the Finnish capital city and has wandered some of the twisting cobblestone paths in search of its many sights — a well-timed distraction from the outcomes of his most recent NHL starts and the mediocre stats that accompany them.

By his own admission, the Winnipeg netminder — who emerged last season as one of the top goaltenders in the NHL — hasn't had a banner beginning to the 2018-19 campaign. In nine opportunities to guard the Jets net, Hellebuyck has posted a 4-4-1 record, a 3.00 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.

Those aren't numbers that warrant a 911 response, but they're not what Jets fans were accustomed to seeing from the 25 year old during a breakout 2017-18 season.

Most importantly, they don't resemble the body of work the Michigan-born goaltender, who dropped his last two starts, demands of himself.

Premier touts addition of 137 physicians to Manitoba

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 3:59 PM CDT

Manitoba’s recruitment office has helped to attract 137 physicians to the province since it was established in 2024, including 18 who have taken positions in the western region.

“The point we are making today is that things are getting better, improvements are happening and investments are bringing people to Manitoba,” Premier Wab Kinew said at an announcement in Brandon to highlight the office’s efforts to attract physicians from across Canada and abroad.

The office, which was established as part of the 2024 budget, helps physicians navigate licensing, immigration and job placements. It has engaged with nearly 800 prospective recruits to date.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said the office has assisted professionals during every step of their journey, adding that there have been some “hairy” situations at airports where the minister has waited to greet an arriving physician.

Hand-painted stones are the priceless treasure in simple but emotionally affecting hide-and-seek pastime

David Sanderson 8 minute read Wednesday, Jun. 26, 2019

To mark the second anniversary of Winnipeg Rocks, a popular Facebook group that plays hide-and-seek with hand-painted rocks and stones, founder Lorna Kroeker invited members to leave a message on their home page letting others know what Winnipeg Rocks means to them.

Within a few hours hundreds of people had done just that, each post more heartwarming than the last.

“This group has brought so much joy into my kids’ and my life,” read a message from a mother named Mary. “We love painting rocks together as a family (and) love going out to explore new places — and old favourites — to hide our creations.”

“I made friends with a homeless man… brought him coffee whenever we crossed paths,” wrote Leanne. “At Christmas time he gave me a Winnipeg Rocks rock with the word ‘Imagine’ on it. He’d found it in the summer and kept it with him to give to me as a gift.”

MPI gambles with low rate request

MPI gambles with low rate request

Editorial 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

It sounds a bit like a gamble from a player in an industry that is almost pathologically averse to gambling.

Manitoba Public Insurance is currently going through the Public Utilities Board process to set car insurance rates for 2027-28, and it’s asking the PUB to approve a 2.38 rate hike.

As a provincially-run insurance business, MPI is already a bit of an outlier, because, through its government masters, it’s answerable to the Manitoba public in a way that private insurers aren’t.

Private insurers spend a fortune calculating risk, offsetting that risk with reinsurance to spread it out across the insurance spectrum, and always finding a way to ensure there’s a profit margin built in.

Several masked and armed suspects forced their way into a home on Lake Ridge Road in Winnipeg’s west suburbs late on Monday, terrorizing the elderly residents as they robbed the place.

Winnipeg Police Service major crimes investigators, who are asking the public for assistance, are trying to identify the suspects and learn about their movements in the area before and after the robbery, said police spokesman Const. Stephen Spencer.

“It would definitely help to have some more information as to who the individuals are. It would be great if somebody had video of the individuals prior to arriving at this location, when they weren’t wearing face coverings, or after,” said Spencer.

“If neighbours in the area maybe noticed something suspicious, around the Lakeridge Park area… around that time of night, if they did see something suspicious, definitely come forward — it could be helpful with solving this case.”
