Karl and Mary Loepp have a broad, living canvas with breathtaking garden vistas around every curve. Situated near the end of a winding road framed by majestic trees in historic St. Andrews, their stunning half-hectare property is a story of surprise and discovery.

Formerly a farmer’s field bereft of a single tree when the Loepps purchased the property and built their home in 2002, it was an apple orchard decades ago. When Karl first began working the soil and building the garden, he found coins dating back to 1908.

Both Karl and Mary spent their childhoods on family farms. They have a deep connection to nature and a passion for preserving history. Avid collectors of vintage farm equipment and hand tools, they are regulars at auctions, always searching for that one special piece to integrate into their garden where it becomes an intentional focal point.

Let’s start off this week’s edition with the Week 21 matchup between the Montreal Roses and AFC Toronto that had already taken place before last week’s column was written.

It was, arguably, the heavyweight matchup of that week, with the Roses attempting to place a three-game buffer between itself and the surging Mighty Maroons while Toronto was trying to gain some breathing room between itself and the Ottawa Rapid.

Instead? A 2-2 draw thwarted any progress from either team.

Making way for the Rapid to leapfrog back into second place over Toronto… right? Well, buckle up for the riveting answer to that question and the jostling for fourth place in this column’s latest edition.

Premier’s travel edict a dangerous political move

Mr. Blue had already been out of Manitoba for a couple of weeks when he got the news that he was in violation of a new and harshly worded edict from Premier Brian Pallister.

Issued hastily on Monday night, the new commandment declared that any government appointee who travels "for leisure purposes" outside Manitoba could be terminated from their positions. People like Mr. Blue.

A life-long Manitoba Progressive Conservative, Mr. Blue, who asked that his real name not be used, has organized campaigns, recruited candidates and raised money. Currently, he sits on the board of an arm's-length government entity, appointed by Pallister.

And right now, he also happens to be at his vacation property in a popular, warm-weather destination.

Sunny summer songs beg to be played at high volume

Summer begins Saturday at precisely 4:44 p.m., Winnipeg time, says the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Every summer since the birth of rock ‘n’ roll seems to have been punctuated by great summer songs. They’ve mostly been happy, up-tempo numbers that rarely spark a political debate.

Exactly what is the philosophy behind the baby-boomer anthem Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets, besides the need to get out of your seat and “rock, rock, rock till broad daylight?”

Our most memorable songs often come from the year we finish high school or the year we leave home. Those are big moments.

Mayor honours pair who rescued little girl, father from Red River in August

A “proud and thankful” Mayor Scott Gillingham honoured two Winnipeggers Friday who rescued a young girl who fell into the Red River last month.

Gillingham said he was humbled to meet Jayclyn Morrissette and Brady Saunders before he presented them with the Mayor’s Award of Valour for saving the child and her father, who jumped into the water in an attempt to help his daughter and nearly drowned.

“These are the kind of people who we have in our city,” he said. “When someone is in need, they’ll step up, risk their own lives, to help someone they’ve never met in their life.”

Morrissette and Saunders were at St. John’s Park in the evening on Aug. 24, when they saw the man and child in the river.
