MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions after 9 p.m. today. The moon is in Scorpio.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Although mild quarrels might arise about how to share the expense of something — don’t let this rankle you. Instead focus on socializing, the arts, sports and fun activities with kids. This is a great day to shmooz!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Tread carefully when talking to family members, spouses, partners and close friends, because things are tense. Furthermore, Mars in your house of communications makes you more aggressive. Pull in your reins a bit. Keep things light.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

There are two options available to you, which is quite appropriate for a Gemini (the twins). You can get caught up in squabbles with siblings, relatives, neighbours and work colleagues; or you can play hooky and have fun doing whatever you want. (No-brainer.)

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Romantic partners must be patient with each other. Likewise, parents must be patient with their kids. Meanwhile, it’s the perfect day to redecorate and tweak your digs. You might even entertain. Get some physical exercise. (Even dancing for three minutes.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The sun, Mercury and Jupiter are in your sign; however, the moon is at odds with the sun triggering domestic arguments and tension with people at home. Fortunately, fair Venus in your house of communications will smooth your words. Dish out the sweetness.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Something going on behind the scenes might make you feel disgruntled. This mood might affect how you speak to others. Not good. Instead, throw your energy into interacting with friends, groups and organizations. You might also buy something beautiful.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This continues to be a great time for you to buy wardrobe items, which is not a bad idea because you like to present well. Did you know the sign of Libra has domain over haute couture? This is why you always look good. Avoid money squabbles. Use your energy to work.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The moon is in your sign at odds with the sun — right at the top of your chart. This means you should avoid quarrels and power struggles with bosses, parents, teachers, VIPs and the police. Instead dabble in secret love affairs or explore avenues in travel, medicine, the law and publishing. Stay out of trouble.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Steer clear of controversial subjects, because they will irk you. (Naturally, you have opinions.) Instead, decide to have fun with a friend or group. Explore new ideas and try to learn something novel. It’s also a passionate day. Hmmm.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Avoid squabbles with a friend. Likewise, don’t get caught up fighting with a member of a group, because what’s the point? The day is challenging, because even partners and close friends might annoy you. Instead, focus on goals, career and chalking up some brownie points with bosses, parents and authority figures.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

There’s a high probability you might have a public argument with someone; in fact, you might be at odds with a boss, parent, teacher, VIP or the police. This is not a good idea. The upside is not favourable. Your best option is to work hard and get organized. That’s a winning choice.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Don’t get bogged down in arguments about politics, religion or racial issues, which is easy to do! Instead, focus on socializing with others, exploring sports, enjoying playful times with kids and expressing your creative talents. Great choice.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971) shares your birthday. You’re dynamic, focused and organized. You present a serious face to the world and have a desire to change society. This is a year of new beginnings, adventures and major changes. Grab new opportunities and be ready to act. What you do now will bring great benefits in the future.

Canada being side-swiped by Trump’s Cuba policy

Peter McKenna 5 minute read Saturday, Jun. 27, 2026

Canada’s decades-long relationship with revolutionary Cuba has always been a three-country affair — with the United States frequently settling for the spurned third-wheel.

Since the early 1960s, successive U.S. governments have strenuously objected to Canadian trade and commercial engagement with the island. Officials in Washington have always believed that the Canadians were trying to make a “quick buck” at America’s expense, while simultaneously seeking to undermine the U.S. blockade of Cuba.

For almost 70 years now, Canada has had to negotiate the thorny issue of the U.S. trade embargo. Added to that was the anti-Cuba Cuban Democracy Act of 1992 and the still active 1996 Helms-Burton Law. Complicating matters further for Ottawa have been the various additions and subtractions to the unrelenting U.S. efforts to strangle the Cuban economy — particularly during the presidency of Barack Obama.

In January, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a near-ironclad (some Russian oil is getting through), illegal fuel embargo against Cuba, using American naval vessels and U.S. Coast Guard ships. Additionally, he signed an executive order in early May to expand U.S. economic warfare, or what some call “secondary sanctions,” against those materially assisting the Cuban government.

St. B eatery puts diners to chili challenge

8 minute read Sunday, Sep. 13, 2015

Open wide and say “ow.”

A restaurant that’s only been on the scene a few months is making a name for itself thanks to a dish that gives new meaning to the term “hot-n-ready.”

Not long after the Diner’s Grill opened for business on June 2, owner and head chef Joshua Mesojednik decided to spice things up a tad by adding a food challenge to the mix. The 24-year-old chef’s dare works like this: any customer willing — and able — to down a dozen chicken wings laced with a few grams of crushed Trinidad scorpion Butch T pepper — one of the most piquant chilies on the planet — wins a $50 gift card, redeemable at the cosy St. Boniface locale. But first, those who accept the challenge are required to sign a waiver, absolving Mesojednik of all blame in the event any of their body parts get scorched in the process.

“At the beginning, I tell them to be very careful because if they start tearing up and touch their eyes without washing their hands first — that’s gonna sting,” Mesojednik said with a chuckle.

Fundraising rappel from top of downtown tower with persuasive granddaughter leaves 72-year-old exhilarated

Zoe Pierce 4 minute read Yesterday at 1:58 PM CDT

It’s safe to say that most people don’t spend Tuesday mornings rappelling 83 metres down the side of a downtown building.

With their 72-year-old grandmother.

But that’s exactly how 23-year-old Morgan Parker started her Tuesday.

Parker and her grandmother Christine Jameus were among 50 Manitobans who took part in Easter Seals’ Drop Zone, raising money for Manitoba Possible, a non-profit organization working to eliminate barriers to full and equal participation for people with disabilities.

Liquor authority fines True North $12K after minors with fake ID served at Jets White Out party

Nicole Buffie 5 minute read Monday, Aug. 17, 2026

True North Sports and Entertainment was hit with a $12,000 fine for serving minors with fake IDs during a Winnipeg Jets White Out street party in 2025.

The company was fined by the Liquor, Gaming & Cannabis Authority of Manitoba on May 13, 2025 after liquor inspectors attended the May 9 street party and witnessed two two minors in possession of and consuming liquor. One was visibly intoxicated, according to a compliance order dated May 15, 2025.

Both minors had security-issued “18+” wristbands and were using identification that was expired and “clearly not their image.”

The compliance order, provided to the Free Press by the LGCA, said inspectors also noticed inadequate identification checking by security before issuing the wristbands, which identify the people wearing them as being of legal drinking age.

Manitoba’s liquor regulator has accused an Exchange District nightclub of exceeding its occupant capacity limit and hindering the work of inspectors.

Diablo, located at Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue, is scheduled to appeal two compliance orders, issued by the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba, at a Sept. 8 hearing.

An LGCA spokesperson said the compliance orders are part of an ongoing investigation.

The spokesperson said one of the orders was issued after the licensed club was over capacity April 26.
