MOON ALERT: After 10 a.m. today there are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Libra.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The moon is opposite your sign, which means you have to go more than halfway when dealing with others. Be accommodating and gracious because conversations might be testy and confrontational as well as confusing. Tread carefully!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Despite family discussions, home repairs and a strong emphasis on your domestic world (including parents), you’re focused on your work, health and perhaps a pet. Unfortunately, there seems to be some kind of confusion that can trigger tension. Patience is your best friend.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a dicey day for romance, fun socializing, sports and playful activities with kids, because confused communications are likely. Plus, you might not have the energy to follow through on your plans. Furthermore, disputes about money and possessions might arise. Go gently.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Family disputes, especially with female relatives, are likely. Unfortunately, miscommunication and false expectations might contribute to this. Assume nothing. Don’t be pushy; and yet, don’t give up. Keep in mind that many people do not grasp how sensitive your feelings are. (It is what it is, and you have to live with it.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is the classic day for tension in communications with your everyday contacts — siblings, relatives and neighbours. This could be due to confusion. Misdirection. Misunderstandings. Possibly deceit. Be aware that someone behind the scenes might be working against your best interests. (Yikes!)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Be careful spending money and with any financial wheeling and dealing, because you might not have all the facts, or you might be confused or misled. Therefore, double-check everything. Avoid misunderstandings with friends and groups. (You don’t need this.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day. In one way, you have the advantage, because the moon is in your sign. However, fiery Mars and Neptune are at odds with the moon creating conflict with authority figures and confused communication with partners and close friends. Yes, a tricky day.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Steer clear of controversial subjects like politics, religion and racial issues, because there’s too much confusion and misunderstanding. Fuzzy Neptune is in the picture, which is like Vaseline on your lens. You’re not seeing clearly. Meanwhile, Mars can create irritability.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You might want to enjoy time with a friend or a group. You might even spitball some ideas you have about your future goals? Be aware that friction with someone over shared property, joint costs or romantic confusion are impossible to avoid.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a poor day to ask for permission or approval from an authority figure, because the answer will probably be, “Talk to the hand.” Meanwhile, be aware you are high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. Guard against a public argument with a spouse or friend.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Communications are confused, which is why this is a poor day for important discussions on controversial subjects. Political arguments are classic examples, especially if they relate to your work. Health-related issues might also be confusing. Step carefully.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might be involved in social outings including sporting events, fun activities with kids or romantic dates. If so, be patient, because misunderstandings and confused communications are par for the course. These are relatively minor influences. Don’t let them ruin a meaningful relationship. Be patient. Be tolerant.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, director Ben Affleck (1972) shares your birthday. You’re tenacious, inspirational and influential. You formulate farsighted strategies with logic and practical organizational skills. This is a year of service for you, perhaps to family. Take care of yourself so you can be a resource for those who turn to you for guidance, comfort and courage.

There were multiple Manitoban bowls players in the 2026 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships last week.

Sam Forrest placed silver in the U18 boys’ Canadian Youth and Junior Championships in Hanover, Ont., that was held from Aug. 10-14.

And in the North Vancouver, B.C., leg of the championships that was held Aug. 16-23, the 13-year-old competed with his grandfather, John Bjornson, as well as Rod Rose and Wayne Trindall in the men’s fours. Forrest was honoured with the Spirit Award.

Women’s pairs Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong and her mother Clarice Fitzpatrick won silver falling short to the B.C. duo they faced.

‘Depravity is stunning’: Winnipeg couple who tortured, killed animals on dark web sentenced to 12 years

Dean Pritchard 6 minute read Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026

A Winnipeg couple who tortured and killed dozens of cats and other small animals for an online paying audience was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday.

Crown and defence lawyers jointly recommended the sentence for Irene Lima and Chad Kabecz in a case that prompted massive public outrage.

“The depravity is stunning,” said King’s Bench Justice Jeffrey Harris, who banned both offenders from possessing animals for life. “In over 40 years as a lawyer and judge, I have not seen any facts come close to this… I cannot begin to conceive of the suffering of these defenceless animals as you tortured them to death for your own deviant sexual pleasure and profit.”

Lima, 56, crushed the animals to death with her bare feet, while 41-year-old Kabecz recorded the killings, videos of which were shared with paying customers via a chat group where Lima was known as “Goddess May.”

Foster system must be better

Re: Paralyzed foster girl has system under a microscope (Aug. 18)

Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine’s assertion that “you can’t train people not to be violent” should concern everyone who cares about the safety of children in Manitoba’s child welfare system.

Of course, no training program can guarantee that an individual will never harm a child. But framing these tragedies as the actions of a few “abominable” people risks absolving the system of its responsibility to prevent harm.

Bombers offence stalls in 22-19 loss to Elks

Joshua Frey-Sam 8 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:19 AM CDT

It was a microcosm of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ season to this point: a first half that burned bright only to be dowsed in cold water.

The Bombers began the first leg of their mid-season gauntlet with a 22-19 loss to the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium in the Alberta capital on Friday night.

Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo orchestrated an eight-play, 54-yard drive that set up a 40-yard game-winning field goal by Vincent Blanchard that snuck inside the left upright with zeros on the clock.

The drive, which was plagued by poor tackling by the Bombers defence, came after Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo tied the game at 19-19 on a 53-yard boot with 1:41 remaining in the contest.

Residents fear mailbox crime sprees

Morgan Modjeski 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

Some North End residents are concerned new community mailboxes will become a target for vandalism and crime after the base of one was recently lit ablaze — before it was even installed.

The community mailboxes started to show up on Andrews Street within the last two weeks. Some have been installed, while at other locations, only the concrete foundation is in place.

“They just dumped them on the boulevard,” said Stephen Giesbrecht, who lives beside one of the boxes in the St. John’s neighbourhood. “They dumped them on the corner and then they were gone.”

One of the concrete slabs has already played host to a fire and some of the hardware needed to install the mailbox melted.

Allen misses out on league MVP award

Taylor Allen 4 minute read Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026

Winnipeg Sea Bears guard Teddy Allen has come up short in his bid to win a second career CEBL Most Valuable Player award — and he’s not happy about it.

The league revealed its award winners Thursday, with Scarborough Shooting Stars guard Myles Powell taking home the MVP honours over Allen who was the finalist out of the Western Conference.

Powell, who was also named the Clutch Player of the Year with nine target score winners, averaged 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists while leading Scarborough to a historic 20-4 record.

“A dude who averaged 23 on 38 per cent. You will never see me again. Lost ya credibility,” Allen commented on Instagram.
