Petan looking for a job; Jets may have opening

Jason Bell 6 minute read Monday, Sep. 10, 2018

Is this the season Nic Petan earns a full-time gig with the Winnipeg Jets?

The 23-year-old from Delta, B.C., boasts an impressive "previous employment" section on his hockey resume: high-scoring centre in the Western Hockey League; gold medallist with Team Canada at the 2015 world junior hockey championship; and point-a-game performer in the American Hockey League.

Yet, he hasn't found a permanent spot on the NHL club's roster, five years after the Jets selected him in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2013 NHL draft.

Gone from the landscape are centres Paul Stastny and Matt Hendricks and wingers Joel Armia and Shawn Matthias, meaning at least a couple of job openings up front are available.

Drug site open house called off after media tipped off

Nicole Buffie 5 minute read Yesterday at 5:54 PM CDT

Local business owners are miffed an open house for the upcoming supervised consumption site was cancelled after the media found out about it and interest swelled.

Members of the North Logan Community group said the tour, planned for today, was billed as an opportunity to ask questions about the site at 366 Henry Ave. However, they say it was cancelled Tuesday after interest in the event went beyond the neighbourhood and there was concern about managing attendance.

Norman Alegria, the group’s communications representative, said he registered seven people from the North Logan group to attend the open house.

“About an hour later, there was a concern that there was a media leak. The following day, (Tuesday), we received word that it was cancelled because of the media leak,” Alegria told a group of reporters and business owners outside the supervised consumption site Wednesday afternoon.

Enlist landlord to turn down neighbours’ volume

Maureen Scurfield Miss Lonelyhearts 3 minute read Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2022

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My side-by-side duplex neighbour sings loud, horrible duets with his girlfriend. She sings in a screechy soprano, and he bangs on the piano, and attempts to “harmonize” with her.

It’s just painful. We can hear them clearly through our cheap walls. For some reason, they get inspired late at night. Then they can go for up to an hour “singing” together. It’s endless when you’re trying to go to sleep and have to work in the morning. We figure they must be hitting the bottle.

I end up having to bang on the wall and swear at the top of my lungs to shut them up. Last night the guy banged back, and yelled through the wall, “What’s your problem, you idiot? Why don’t you come over here!”

Should I go see them? My girlfriend wants me to shut down their singing for good, no matter what it takes.

Laine might skip camp, but bet on him in Jets’ opening-night lineup

Mike McIntyre 1 minute read Monday, Aug. 19, 2019

Patrik Laine has "got nothing bad to say about Winnipeg," which doesn't exactly jump off the page as a new slogan to slap on our licence plates, erect some billboards and build a tourism campaign around, does it?

I suppose it's better than "We were born here, what's your excuse?" which The Simpsons famously — at least around here — asked in an episode years ago that involved Homer coming to our backyard to obtain cheap prescription drugs for residents of Springfield.

But those hoping for another love letter from Laine — like that sugary sweet "Winnipeg is good" puff piece ghostwritten on his behalf in the Players' Tribune in early 2018 — likely felt scorned as he spoke last week from Finland with Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

Laine's rather lukewarm comments about his hockey home for the past three seasons have seemingly poured gasoline all over the fire that was already burning when it comes to the 21 year old, who remains without a contract as the clock ticks louder towards the start of training camp next month.

Jennifer was Jonesing to get back on the ice

Jason Bell 6 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 29, 2020

The latest on-ice triumph for Jennifer Jones generated minimal attention and won't warrant a special section on the former Winnipegger's glitzy curling résumé.

But it was definitely one to savour, says the former Olympic gold medallist, two-time world champion and six-time Canadian champion.

Jones and her husband, Brent Laing, combined forces to win a mixed doubles event in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont., over the weekend, their first time competing since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March.

The Cameron's Brewing cashspiel drew 10 duos to the KW Granite Club and wrapped up in just 48 hours. The Jones-Laing partnership posted five consecutive victories, including a 7-1 rout of fellow Ontarians Maddy Warriner and Charlie Richard in Sunday's final.
