A Punjabi song about Winnipeg has gone viral online with more than a million views on YouTube.

The tune, released under Ontario-based label Brown Town Music, is a duet between Deep Dhillon and Gurleg Akhtar who are both well-known singers in their home country of India.

Simply titled Winnipeg, the three-minute song is about estranged lovers; the girl who now lives in the West whilst her ex-boyfriend has remained in East India.

The video starts off with a scene in rural Punjab and swiftly moves to a location meant to portray Winnipeg.

As of Wednesday, the YouTube video garnered approximately 1.4 million views in less than a week since its release.

Although the song is about Manitoba’s capital, there are exterior shots of the city appearing in the video.

This isn’t the first time a Punjabi song features Winnipeg.

In 2016, Indian singer, actor and lyricist Gurnam Bhullar, best known for his 2018 single Diamond, brought out a song with similar themes, also called Winnipeg.

The accompanying video was shot in both Canada and India.

Both releases seem to highlight the cultural differences new immigrants encounter when moving to North America.

Members of the local Punjabi community aren’t surprised that the city has been featured in Punjabi songs.

Winnipeg has a large Punjabi population says Amit Saini, student success adviser at the University of Manitoba.

Saini runs a monthly club night under his Winnipeg Desi Entertainments venture.

“Canada is a big influence in Punjabi culture. A lot of people from the Punjab region of India move abroad here. The general assumption is that if you move here you will have a good life and more opportunities that you might not be able to have in Punjab,” he says.

Giant Tiger decision creates giant void for desperate population

A lot of Winnipeggers may shrug, but the end of Giant Tiger’s downtown store is a giant problem for many of the people living in the centre of the city.

It would have been difficult for anyone going into or passing by the Canadian discount chain’s Donald Street and Ellice Avenue location Thursday to miss the red notices posted on the store’s windows advising it will close on Nov. 7.

According to a 2024 Downtown Winnipeg BIZ report, about 18,000 people live in Winnipeg’s downtown.

More than 60,000 people work there, and some days — when there’s a big concert or the Jets play at Canada Life Centre, for example — the number of people spending time in the area increases significantly.

Dennis Northcott has launched a game without frontiers.

The Winnipeg entrepreneur is the co-designer of Galactic Cruise, a board game published last year by Kinson Key Games LLC, the business he co-founded. Since its release, Galactic Cruise has been translated into 11 languages and sold around 50,000 copies worldwide.

It’s also one of three finalists for this year’s Deutsche Spiele Preis, a prestigious community-voted board game award. Northcott will travel to Essen, Germany, later this month, where the winner will be announced at Spiel Essen, an annual board game trade fair.

“It’s been amazing,” Northcott said of the response to Galactic Cruise during an interview in his Island Lakes neighbourhood home earlier this week. “The sales have been great, but it’s also been amazing in terms of people giving their reviews.”

Manchester City will face Liverpool in the Premier League next weekend.

That is a statement of fact. The match will kick off Sunday, October 11 at 4:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m., CT, FuboTV) at Anfield, though the 90 minutes that follow will be more a spectacle than a game, if not a circus.

By now the football world — as well as the general news cycle and relevant authorities — has had more than a week to absorb the shock of the sport’s biggest tremor of recent times.

Man City, according to the findings of an independent commission, broke more than 100 of the Premier League’s financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Its breaches, per the ruling, were deliberate, premeditated and at industrial scale.

Your fall gardening checklist

September is as pivotal a time for the garden and landscape as early spring.

Admittedly, it feels different. Spring is all about anticipation and the excitement of sweeping away winter and transforming the garden. But autumn presents opportunities as well.

The weather this year has been a mixed bag that has meant misery for some and joy for others. Closing the garden for the season may mean a greater cleanup burden if recent storms caused fallen trees, broken branches or damage to your property.

But with predictions for a milder-than-normal winter by Environment and Climate Change Canada and other meteorologists, it’s important to prepare the garden. Milder temperatures in winter can mean less snow cover, and less snow cover can lead to drier conditions next spring. In addition, milder conditions do not exclude the possibility of extreme cold snaps that, without the benefit of a deep snowpack, can be a killer for plants.

BRANDON — Canada Packers has strengthened its business and laid the foundation for future growth during its first year as an independent company, its president says.

The Brandon-based pork producer, separated from Maple Leaf Foods in October 2025, established its own leadership, strategy, systems, culture and identity while continuing operations across its hog production farms and regional hog barns in southern and eastern Manitoba.

The company’s first year was focused on building a successful standalone business while continuing to serve customers, communities and shareholders, president Dennis Organ said.

“Market conditions over the past year have been more challenging than we anticipated when we became a separate entity,” he said in an email. “Despite that, we continued to execute against our priorities, including increasing processing volumes, maintaining disciplined operations and strengthening the business.”
