ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a wonderful day to shmooz and socialize with others. Sporting events and fun activities with children will also appeal. Romance is definitely energized. Some people will encounter new love.

Baazigar star Shah Rukh Khan is 61 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day particularly at home (even though there is increased activity and chaos there). Relations with co-workers are positive. In fact, for some of you, a work-related romance might begin. Ex-spouses, partners and friends from your past are back on the scene.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a wonderful day for you, which is why you feel energetic, intellectually alive and eager to talk to others. You want to share your ideas, especially with a romantic interest — if you can swing this. Be patient with silly mistakes at work.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a great day for financial negotiations if you can avoid the moon alert (see above). In particular, you might be pleased with purchases made for your home, especially to make your place more attractive. Possibly, you’ll buy something you’ve had your eye on for some time.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a winner day for you because the moon is dancing with fiery Mars and lucky Jupiter in your own sign, as well as winking at fair Venus. This makes you flirtatious, happy, convivial and ready to enjoy the company of others. Romance is blessed.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a feel-good day because something going on behind the scenes will give you a warm feeling in your tummy. Perhaps you’re expecting money or something else to come through for you. (It looks like it will.) You’ll be pleased with purchases you make.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a wonderful day to buy wardrobe goodies for yourself, as long as you can avoid the moon alert (see above). It’s also a great day to shmooz. Enjoy the company of friends and groups. You might be involved in something competitive. Romance is blessed.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It doesn’t get much better than this. The sun and Mercury are in your sign while the moon, Mars and Jupiter are lined up at the top of your chart. This makes you powerful, charismatic and diplomatically ambitious. Go after what you want, but be aware of the moon alert.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Be confident about exploring opportunities to travel, and also avenues related to medicine, the law, higher education and publishing, as these are all areas that will favour you. A friendship might turn romantic and surprise you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Financial negotiations will favour you, along with discussions about how to divide or share something such as an inheritance — even a debt. You might also get a boss, parent or someone in authority to endorse your side. Hey, whatever works.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a fabulous day to shmooz because people want to see you. Ongoing relations with spouses, partners and close friends are excellent. Travel plans will appeal. Possibly, a long-distance romance or someone from your past will reappear to ignite something exciting.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

A work-related romance might begin for many of you. Certainly, you feel affectionate and passionate. You might also have a strong desire to “get away from all this” and do something different as you want change and adventure.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan (1965) shares your birthday. You are genuine, good-natured and logical. You like to promote the welfare of others. Expect exciting changes and increased personal freedom this year. Learn to be more flexible and to let go of whatever holds you back. Seek new opportunities. Expect to meet new friends.

City plans renos, repairs on underused, money-losing office tower next to police HQ

Joyanne Pursaga 4 minute read 2:01 AM EST

The city is preparing to repair two floors of the mostly vacant office tower linked to the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters that has cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars more each year than it earns.

The plan is to renovate the second and third floors of the 11-storey former Canada Post tower at 266 Graham Ave, including some repairs needed to meet current building codes, notes a tendering document seeking a contractor to do the work.

In 2009, the city spent $29 million to buy the Canada Post warehouse and the tower, as part of the scandal-plagued police HQ project. Police now work out of the former warehouse and utilize some space in the tower.

The repair work will include interior demolition, asbestos abatement, several fire safety and smoke detection upgrades and some replacement of partitions, doors, hardware and ceilings. The winning bidder will also complete electrical, mechanical and lighting upgrades.

Tools, technology required to retain doctors

4 minute read 2:01 AM EST

Manitoba has made some encouraging progress in addressing its doctor shortage. But attracting more physicians to the province will accomplish only so much if the health-care system can’t give them the tools, technology and working conditions they need to do their jobs.

A new report from Doctors Manitoba suggests the province is making progress in growing its physician workforce. But serious gaps remain.

The organization’s annual Physicians in Manitoba report contains some welcome news. The province now has a record number of physicians practising here, with 235 doctors per 100,000 residents. That’s getting closer to the national average of 245.

The overall physician shortage has also been cut nearly in half from its peak three years ago, when Manitoba needed 445 additional doctors to reach the national average. It now needs 229.

The times, they aren’t a-changin’

I would like to ask Premier Wab Kinew a very simple question: Why in the world would you want to leave the clocks on permanent daylight time rather than continue changing them twice a year, as Manitobans have been accustomed to doing for decades?

Manitoba is in the geographical middle of Canada. Our time zone should reflect our location and our relationship with the rest of Western Canada.

I simply cannot understand the reasoning behind keeping Manitoba on permanent daylight time. Changing our clocks twice a year has been part of our lives since 1963. Why fix something that has worked for generations?

The AI snake is eating its tail

David Nutbean 5 minute read 2:01 AM EST

Computer technology has become the dominant force in the modern world. New technology subsuming older technology is the raison d’être of modern capitalism.

Pioneers of this new digital age took advantage of the profound difference between what they were building and what came before, advancing their influence and predominance. Little by little, the advantages ate away at the influence of non-digital technology, until the snake consumed most of modern information technology.

And now it is eating itself.

The beginning of the modern era of computing began with the Graphical User Interface (GUI, pronounced “gooey”). Back in the ’80s this was a new commercial technology exclusive to Apple’s Lisa computer and, later, the MacIntosh.
