GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The moon is in your sign, dancing beautifully with fiery Mars, lucky Jupiter and fair Venus. You couldn’t ask for more! This is a great day to get your hair done or have beauty appointments of any kind. Relations with others will be warm and energetic. Ask for what you want!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You’re full of innovative ideas that can help you write, promote, teach, act or connect with others. Oh yes, you’re in the zone! People will be attracted to you because they want to hear what you have to say. Look for ways to make money from communications.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Financial discussions will favour you, which is why this is a good day to discuss inheritances, banking details, insurance issues and anything to do with shared property. Check the moon alert before you agree to anything; and because Mercury is retrograde in your sign, double-check details!

City rec facilities crumbling

Ryan Thorpe 6 minute read Monday, Oct. 22, 2018

Throughout Winnipeg, decades-old community assets — pools, arenas and recreation and leisure centres — are deteriorating so quickly that service disruptions are inevitable.

Meanwhile, the city’s community services department, which is responsible for managing those assets, operates with an annual deficit of roughly $80 million, meaning there are scant resources to do little more than bail water on a sinking ship.

Soon, Winnipeggers will have a choice: fewer community services or higher costs.

“It poses a huge challenge because we have very limited dollars that we have to invest in our existing facilities. We also have growing demands for new amenities in new areas. We have to be very strategic,” said Ken McKim, manager of asset management for the department.

Opera singer David Daniels no longer in singers’ union following sexual assault guilty plea

The Associated Press 2 minute read Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023

NEW YORK (AP) — Countertenor David Daniels is no longer a member of the union for singers following his guilty plea to a charge of sexual assault.

The 57-year-old and his husband, Scott Walters, pleaded guilty to sexual assault of an adult, a second-degree felony, in Houston's Harris County District Court on Aug. 4. Their accuser was aspiring opera singer Sam Schultz.

They both were sentenced to eight years’ probation and required to register as sex offenders.

American Guild of Musical Artists spokesperson Alicia Cook said Wednesday that Daniels is no longer a member of the union.

‘All females are at risk’: serial sex offender released from prison

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 1:43 PM CDT

Law enforcement are warning the public that a dangerous sex offender with a lengthy history of abusing women is expected to live in Winnipeg after his release from prison.

Douglas Wayne Bowman, 62, left prison on Thursday after serving a lengthy sentence for two sexual assaults he committed at knifepoint, said the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit, a joint force of the Winnipeg Police Service and RCMP that keeps an eye on certain sex criminals.

Bowman was handed the 14-year sentence in 2018, less six years time served, and designated a dangerous offender. Criminals deemed dangerous offenders are given indefinite federal sentences until parole officials decide it is safe enough to release them.

Now that he’s leaving prison, Bowman will be subject to a 10-year long-term supervision order, which allows corrections and parole officials to continue to monitor him in the community even though his sentence is complete.

Record number of women elected in Manitoba municipal elections

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Yesterday at 3:33 PM CDT

A record number of women were elected to municipal office in Manitoba in elections held across the province Wednesday.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities said 213 of 339 women candidates were voted in, accounting for almost 25 per cent of elected municipal officials — up from 20 per cent in 2022.

Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox, who applauded the increase, said there has been progress to reduce barriers that impede women’s participation in local government, “but I don’t think we’re where we need to be yet.”

“I think representation matters. When women see other women sitting around council tables, chairing meetings and taking on leadership roles, it helps them see themselves doing the same thing,” she said.

Pair preps for weekend test in Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C. — Their first spin around the ice at Skate Canada International on Thursday was a mix of business and pleasure for Winnipeg pair skaters Ava Kemp and Yohnatan Elizarov.

Job one for the practice session was to get accustomed to the size and feel of the ice surface at Propsera Place while test-driving the lifts, throws and jumps they’ll perform Friday in their senior ISU Grand Prix competition debut.

“The big thing is the patterns (skating into elements) because these boards are very narrow but very long — it’s NHL size — so when you’re setting up elements you need to make sure you’re using the full length or else you’re going to run into the boards,” Elizarov explained in a post-skate chat with media.

“The second thing is the ice which is sometimes really soft or really hard. This ice is really soft.”

Security tightens at downtown library

Aldo Santin 5 minute read Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019

Users of the downtown Millennium Library will be subject to several new security screening measures, more commonly seen at airports and sporting facilities.

City hall announced Friday that effective Feb. 25, all visitors to the Donald Street library will undergo bag checks and be subjected to a hand-held metal detector sweep for alcohol and prohibited weapons. Visitors who refuse to participate will be barred from entering the library.

“The number of incidents (has) increased in the past four to five years, incidences involving violence, threats, alcohol, substance abuse and it was concerning. We met with police and our security contractor. After discussing, we came up with this course of action,” Ed Cuddy, manager of library services, told reporters. “We feel it’s a big change, but we feel it’s justified based on the kind of incidents we’ve been experiencing recently.”

Cuddy wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the incidents, but did say library workers have not been the victims.
