MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The full moon peaks in Taurus.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Parents have to be patient with their kids. All of you have to be patient with others when discussing shared property, taxes, debt, inheritances, social occasions, and involvement with friends and groups. People are at odds with each other.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

There’s no way to sugarcoat this. The full moon is in your sign, plus, the moon is at odds with Pluto and Mars. “Our options are limited Captain. We cannot fire and we cannot flee.” Yes, the logic of Spock. Sit this one out. Don’t add fuel to the fire.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Arguments and disputes are classic because a number of planets are at odds with each other, plus, it’s a full moon in Taurus. Simply put, this means don’t go looking for trouble because it will easily find you. Your work might be hampered by delays and mistakes.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Naturally, with the moon being your ruler, you will feel the energy of the full moon. But more than that, the moon is at odds with both Pluto and Mars, encouraging competition, confrontations, even jealousy. Quarrels about money and possessions might take place.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a challenging day because the full moon is at odds with your sign, possibly triggering irritation and annoyance with others. Some kind of situation will likely come to a head. One upside is that secrets could be revealed, which might be a good thing.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might be quick to make a retort to someone. And likewise, you will notice others are a bit touchy as well. Fortunately, the full moon is supportive to you; nevertheless, you will have to be patient with others. That’s the best way to skate through this day.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Although many of you are in the legal profession and can debate eloquently, as a rule, you avoid confrontations. (Nobody likes the nasties.) Confrontations about money, possessions, kids, social occasions and issues related to organizations are likely. Keep your head down and your powder dry.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Cut yourself some slack as the day’s vibes are challenging. For starters, the full moon is opposite your sign; and because it is also at odds with Mars and Pluto relations with authority figures, parents as well as family members are potentially contentious. Tread carefully.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Avoid controversial subjects as it’s easy to fall into an argument or dispute with someone. Not only will discussions with siblings, relatives and neighbours be dicey, but the full moon can create problems with work colleagues or something related to your pet.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a popular time for you, especially because friends and contacts from the past are back in your world. Be patient with your kids and avoid disputes about shared property, money, joint expenses and debt. Keep things light.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Your dealings with parents and authority figures will be challenged, no question. This is not the day to ask for permission or approval. Likewise, relations with partners, spouses and close friends are also on thin ice. Patience and diplomacy are your best friends.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Avoid touchy subjects such as politics, religion and racial issues. Likewise, don’t be demanding with co-workers because arguments can quickly flare up. Give yourself an easy schedule. Avoid difficult people for your own peace of mind.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Animator, actor, writer Seth MacFarlane (1973) shares your birthday. You’re focused, organized and commanding. You’re also a gifted leader. This is a year of new beginnings, adventures and major changes. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities and be ready to act. Define your goals. What you do now will bring great benefits in the future.

Jets make Vegas look like expansion team

Paul Wiecek 6 minute read Sunday, May. 13, 2018

Let’s get one thing straight: the two best teams in the conference had already played against each other long before they dropped the puck at Bell MTS Place on Saturday night for Game 1 of the Western Conference final between the Winnipeg Jets and Vegas Golden Knights.

We know it, anyone who watched the Jets defeat the Nashville Predators in an epic seven-game series knows it and, yes, seeing as you asked, so do the Vegas Golden Knights.

“It’s probably true,” Vegas forward Jonathan Marchessault conceded on Friday.

And then on Saturday, Marchessault and his Vegas teammates removed any remaining doubt.

Seniors should never be homeless

Jon Gerrard 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

There is much attention paid to helping those who become homeless, but all too little attention given to preventing homelessness in the first place.

About one quarter of all the people experiencing homelessness are seniors, according to the most recent End Homelessness Winnipeg report. This represents a fundamental failure of our province to prevent homelessness.

Ending homelessness where it has become chronic should not be considered the end point in addressing homelessness. It is like trying to solve the problem of water on your kitchen floor by mopping it up, without considering the importance of turning off the tap so that water does not continue flowing over the edge of the sink.

Preventing homelessness in seniors is achievable. We have many resources and many organizations which support seniors, but they are fragmented, poorly co-ordinated, inadequately, funded in some cases, and have not sufficiently focused their efforts on preventing homelessness in seniors. Too many seniors are falling through the cracks.

Former mayor Murray endorses Redden in civic election

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Updated: 3:54 PM CDT

Former mayor Glen Murray is endorsing Winnipeg mayoral candidate Noah Redden in Wednesday’s civic election.

Murray — who was the city’s mayor from 1998 to 2004 and came second in the 2022 mayoral race, narrowly losing to Scott Gillingham — endorsed the progressive 27-year-old on Tuesday morning, just a day before voters go to the polls.

“We have to compete in Winnipeg with larger, wealthier cities, and culture and quality of life, a vibrant downtown, exciting places to live, great public transit, all those things that we’re missing right now, that have been disinvested in, it needs that,” Murray told the Free Press.

“He represents that generation. I had my last hurrah, it’s time for people like me and Kevin Klein and Scott Gillingham to get out of the way and start nurturing a generation of Winnipeggers who are either going to step up in leadership positions in our city or they’re going to leave to places where they can participate.”

Russian Olympic archer loses consciousness in Tokyo heat

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jul. 23, 2021

TOKYO (AP) — Russian archer Svetlana Gomboeva lost consciousness during a competition at the Tokyo Olympics in intense heat Friday.

Gomboeva collapsed shortly after completing the qualifying round and was attended by medical staff, coach Stanislav Popov said in comments published by the Russian Olympic Committee.

"It's the first time that I remember something like this happening," he said. "In Vladivostok, where we were training before this, the weather was similar. But the humidity here had an influence.”

Temperatures in Tokyo were above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). The heat in Tokyo’s summer months already prompted organizers to move the marathons and race-walking events to the cooler city of Sapporo.

Transit budget cap means cuts

Transit budget cap means cuts

Aldo Santin  5 minute read Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019

Winnipeg is literally facing dark times, officials involved in budget presentations revealed Wednesday at city hall.

The public works director said a proposed freeze on the street lighting budget means the City of Winnipeg will have to turn off an increasing number of lights over the next four years.

Winnipeg Transit said an imposed two per cent cap on its budget will mean the elimination of dozens of positions and the low-income bus pass might never see the light of day, along with a host of service cuts.

The budget prospects left Coun. Matt Allard, chairman of the public works committee and a public transit advocate, looking rattled and at a loss to explain how city hall can dig its way out of the financial situation.
