Piece of magic history disappears

Kelly-Anne Riess 5 minute read Monday, Oct. 12, 2026

A piece of Winnipeg’s magic history has vanished, and internationally renowned escape artist Dean Gunnarson is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can make it reappear.

The plaque marked the birthplace of what has become the world’s largest organization of professional and amateur magicians, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, which was founded in Winnipeg more than a century ago.

Gunnarson said fellow magician and local magic historian Bruce Thompson discovered the disappearance Tuesday while on his way to work.

Thompson returned to inspect the site and found what appeared to be evidence it had been forcibly removed.

Manitoba teen’s assault conviction overturned

Katie May 6 minute read Friday, Jun. 15, 2018

A six-year-old girl’s account of being sexually assaulted by a teenage boy at a park was enough to convince a Manitoba provincial court judge to convict the teen. But the judge’s comments about playground sand were enough for the province’s top court to overturn the conviction.

In a decision that shows how difficult it can be to secure a conviction in sexual-assault cases involving child victims, the Manitoba Court of Appeal has reversed the guilty verdict and ordered a new trial for the then-17-year-old male, who had been convicted and sentenced to probation for sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.

Two out of three judges on the appeal panel decided there was a “miscarriage of justice” because the provincial court judge made legal errors in his analysis of the evidence — namely, whether the accused was telling the truth when he talked about the consistency of sand in the park where the girl was playing.

A third judge disagreed, writing in a dissenting judgment released earlier this month that the teen’s conviction should have been upheld.

With 18,000 students in 59 government-funded schools, independent schools are playing an increasingly important role in Manitoba.

Many of these schools are religious schools like The King’s School, Dasmesh School, Springs Christian Academy, Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, Beautiful Saviour Lutheran School, Linden Christian School, Steinbach Christian School and IQRA Islamic School.

On its website, the provincial government says it “strongly supports the rights of parents and guardians to choose their child’s education. Parents choose independent schools for reasons such as faith, philosophy of teaching and learning, and tradition.”

This is quite a contrast to 110 years ago. That’s when the province passed the School Attendance Act of 1916 as a way, during wartime, to promote integration and social cohesion.
