Pagtakhan, Wyatt won’t run in fall civic election

Aldo Santin 4 minute read Thursday, Jun. 21, 2018

It was a day of surprise announcements at city council Thursday, where two veteran councillors said they would not run for re-election in the fall, and a former councillor said he will join the race.

Two councillors first elected in 2002 announced — separately — they won't be running for re-election in October's civic election.

Mike Pagtakhan, who represents the inner-city Point Douglas ward, was first out of the starting gate at the start of Thursday's monthly council meeting.

Following the lunch break, Transcona's Russ Wyatt said he, too, would not run for re-election.

Asylum claim rise needs response: IRB

Stephanie Levitz, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Wednesday, Mar. 22, 2017

OTTAWA - The Immigration and Refugee Board is doing its best to cope with a growing number of asylum claims in Canada, but the federal Liberals must take action as well before an unmanageable backlog gets created, the head of the IRB says.

The rapid pace of the increase in new claims sees the board — an independent tribunal that decides on immigration and refugee cases in Canada — potentially on track to receive 30,000 claims this year — triple the number lodged before it just four years ago.

"There is a limit to what you can do ..." said IRB chairman Mario Dion of his agency's efforts in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"Efficiency has increased significantly, but there is no way we can deal with 30,000 cases when we're funded for about 17,000."

Taxpayers in dark about potential review of charity after it spied on Manitoba judge

Katie May and Kevin Rollason 7 minute read Tuesday, Jul. 13, 2021

It will take years for Canadians to learn if the charitable status is removed from a Calgary-based advocacy group that spied on a Manitoba judge presiding over a constitutional challenge of COVID-19 public health orders.

John Carpay, an Alberta lawyer and the president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, stepped down Tuesday after he admitted in court one day earlier he'd hired private investigators to track Chief Justice Glenn Joyal and other Manitoba public health officials.

The libertarian organization collected $2.6 million in donations last year. As a registered charity since 2010, taxpayers indirectly fund its activities since donors receive receipts for income tax purposes.

The Canada Revenue Agency said it can't confirm whether it is reviewing the organization's status. In a statement to the Free Press Tuesday, a spokeswoman cited confidentiality provisions and said the agency can't disclose when a charity is being audited. An audit would need to happen in order for its charitable status to be revoked.

Masked, armed robbers terrorize elderly residents inside Crestview home

Erik Pindera 2 minute read Yesterday at 3:13 PM CDT

Several masked and armed suspects forced their way into a home on Lake Ridge Road in Winnipeg’s west suburbs late on Monday, terrorizing the elderly residents as they robbed the place.

Winnipeg Police Service major crimes investigators, who are asking the public for assistance, are trying to identify the suspects and learn about their movements in the area before and after the robbery, said police spokesman Const. Stephen Spencer.

“It would definitely help to have some more information as to who the individuals are. It would be great if somebody had video of the individuals prior to arriving at this location, when they weren’t wearing face coverings, or after,” said Spencer.

“If neighbours in the area maybe noticed something suspicious, around the Lakeridge Park area… around that time of night, if they did see something suspicious, definitely come forward — it could be helpful with solving this case.”

Klein eyes tax breaks for developers in ‘under-serviced’ neighbourhoods

Joyanne Pursaga 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:01 PM CDT

Kevin Klein promises to seek a federal tax break and a new city incentive to attract private construction of homes and stores in “economically distressed” neighbourhoods if he becomes Winnipeg’s next mayor.

In a Thursday letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Klein asks Ottawa to work with Winnipeg to develop “community opportunity zones.”

“Many of Winnipeg’s older neighbourhoods continue to struggle with high numbers of vacant and boarded-up properties. These buildings sit empty for years, becoming fire risks, sources of disorder, and barriers to neighbourhood recovery,” Klein wrote.

During a news conference, Klein said he wants the federal government to defer or eliminate taxes on capital gains for investors with qualifying projects in designated “distressed, under-serviced” neighbourhoods. He would work with Ottawa to identify the exact zones where those tax breaks apply, which would be available to Indigenous-led organizations and other groups.

‘Big win’ kept ag tariffs off table: trade rep

Gabrielle Piché 4 minute read Yesterday at 7:16 PM CDT

Retaliatory tariffs on American agriculture was a possibility earlier this year, according to Manitoba’s U.S. trade representative.

Richard Madan says he banded together with various groups — Manitoba Pork, Keystone Agricultural Producers, cattle representatives — to rally against the move.

“We mobilized quickly,” Madan said during a trip to Winnipeg on Thursday.

Madan said he’d heard tariffs on agriculture were “on the table” upon speaking to Janice Charette, Canada’s chief trade negotiator to the U.S., in Washington.
