TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Because your home routine might be interrupted, get dressed and stock the fridge. Be patient with family members. Once the dust settles, a conversation with someone older (perhaps a parent) might bring some structure and direction to things.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Pay attention to what you say and what you do because this is a mildly accident-prone day for you. Keep your eyes open. On the upside, you might have some brilliant ideas because you can think outside of the box. Later in the day, solid, practical solutions might occur to you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Keep an eye on your money and possessions to protect them from loss, theft or damage, because something unexpected might impact what you own. On the other hand, (you have different rings) you might have some innovative moneymaking ideas that impress someone?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a tricky day. The moon is in your sign lined up with Mars, Uranus and Saturn, which means you’ll feel ambitious, powerful and impulsive, yet ready to give things a sober, second thought. Quite a mixture! Go slowly because this is also an accident-prone day. Expect some great moments!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Very likely, this is a restless day for you. It could be because of money and possessions as these things are on your mind. However, someone in a position of authority — a parent, boss or the police — might catch you off-guard. Be alert. (The world needs more lerts.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

A friend or member of a group might surprise you. Or alternatively, you might surprise them? Travel plans and issues related to medicine, the law or publishing are unpredictable. Fortunately, a discussion with a partner or spouse might anchor things for you in a solid way.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You’re high-viz. People notice you. Meanwhile, something unexpected might occur you that calls attention to you? You might have a clever idea or something unexpected could occur? Stay light on your feet. You’re ready to work hard.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Travel plans might be interrupted, as could appointments related to medical, legal or educational issues. (Give yourself extra time so you have wiggle room to deal with the unexpected.) You might have an important discussion about something related to your kids, a vacation or an artistic project.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Keep an eye on banking issues and anything to do with shared property, inheritances, taxes, debt and anything you manage jointly with someone else, because this will be a focus. Something unexpected could occur. A family member might help you solidify things.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Patience will be your best friend as important discussions with partners, close friends and spouses are tricky. You might have to deal with someone who is a bit aggressive, even unpredictable. Social plans might change. Be vigilant with your kids. Something looks “serious.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your job routine might be interrupted, especially if you work from home. You’re motivated to be productive — definitely! You can use also this energy to make some long-range, practical plans. Meanwhile, someone older or more experienced might have advice for you, probably related to earnings or your possessions.

Figure skating coach Callaghan banned by SafeSport

The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019

Richard Callaghan, who coached Tara Lipinski to Olympic gold, has been banned from figure skating by the U.S. Center for SafeSport for sexual misconduct.

Callaghan, who also coached six-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge, was ruled "permanently ineligible" on Wednesday for actions involving a minor. Callaghan was accused by a former student, Adam Schmidt, in a lawsuit. Schmidt alleged that Callaghan sexually abused him from 1999-2001. Schmidt was 14 in 1999.

Also in 1999, Callaghan was investigated for sexual misconduct involving another coach, Craig Maurizi, but U.S. Figure Skating dismissed those charges. Maurizi said the incidents began in 1976 when he was 13, and continued for years.

Now 73, Callaghan was suspended in March 2018 by SafeSport and by the federation. He sued SafeSport, but the lawsuit was dismissed.

Estate of woman who died from local anesthetic injected into blood vessel sues Morden dentist, his business, clinic

Erik Pindera 4 minute read 4:08 PM CDT

The estate of a 23-year-old woman who died after receiving a local anesthetic during a wisdom tooth extraction at a Morden dental clinic has filed a lawsuit over her death.

Virginia Blatz never returned home after she went to Boundary Trails Dental Centre to have her wisdom teeth removed on Nov. 27, 2024. An autopsy later confirmed she died from local anesthetic systemic toxicity caused by an inadvertent injection into a blood vessel, her family has previously said.

Her father, Dulaney Blatz, filed a lawsuit in the Court of King’s Bench on behalf of her estate late last month, naming Ronald David Janz — the dentist who performed the procedure — his dental corporation and the dental corporation that operates the clinic as defendants.

None of the defendants have filed statements of defence in response to the claim, which has not yet been heard in court.

Record participation, funds raised in 2026 breast cancer awareness race

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:23 PM CDT

It’s become a tradition for the West End Legends to gather, get dressed up in hot pink and gab about their late girlfriend on the first Sunday of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Mary was a beauty, a brain, an athlete and a friend,” said Linda Opalko, a 67-year-old member of the fundraising team founded in honour of Mary Stawychny.

Stawychny’s last breath was taken the same day the group — made up of friends the career teacher maintained since she grew up on Ingersoll Street more than 50 years ago — got together for the 2022 CIBC Run for the Cure.

“We were walking as she was leaving us four years ago,” Opalko said as she and fellow fundraisers strolled down Wellington Crescent on Sunday morning.

Three Manitoba nurses censured for inappropriate behaviour

Morgan Modjeski 3 minute read 8:38 PM CDT

A Manitoba nurse has been disciplined for inappropriate behaviour towards students including what is being described as unwanted touching.

The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba listed three recent censures of Manitoba nurses. The most recent details a supervising nurse’s unprofessional conduct while he worked as a clinical education facilitator at the University of Manitoba in 2023.

The behaviour, examined by a college complaints committee, included reports from several students of unwanted touching, violating the confidentiality of students in a group chat and failing to properly report a needlestick injury.

The committee made the decision of censure — a discipline record applied to a nurse’s license — on April 9.

Mayoral candidates Klein, Vogiatzakis continue to snipe over inducement allegations

Chris Kitching and Joyanne Pursaga 7 minute read Updated: 5:50 PM CDT

Winnipeg mayoral candidate Mike Vogiatzakis told reporters Monday he will contact the city clerk to report his allegation that rival Kevin Klein offered him a job to drop out of the race.

Vogiatzakis and Klein both doubled down a day after accusing each other of offering the other a position at city hall, if they were victorious in the Oct. 28 election, in exchange for a withdrawal.

“Do I want to get him charged? Not really. I don’t want to destroy anybody’s life,” Vogiatzakis told reporters.

“Kevin’s a good guy. I thought he was a friend of mine, but he’s not. Kevin uses leverage to get ahead, and he tried to use me as leverage.”

All-Japan committee meets to promote Sapporo Olympic bid

Stephen Wade And Yuri Kageyama, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, May. 10, 2022

TOKYO (AP) — Yasuhiro Yamashita, the head of the Japanese Olympic Committee, acknowledged the biggest stumbling block to holding the Olympics is the billions in costs.

However, in another breath on Tuesday at a so-called “All Japan” meeting to promote Sapporo's bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics, he said that if the northern Japanese city lands the Games, little new construction will be needed — a major expense for every Olympics.

“From both inside and outside our country, there are many views about hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Yamashista said, among politicians and business leaders online — and in Sapporo — talking up the bid. “I realize there are also concerns about the huge costs involved.”

The official cost for last year's delayed Tokyo Olympics was $13.6 billion, although government audits suggest it may have been much more. At least 60% was public money.
