TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day! You’ll enjoy time spent alone in private moments or solitude because you’re sensitive to the problems of others. This will heighten your feelings of compassion and encourage you to be helpful to someone in need. Enjoy relaxing at home.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re interested in the world! You want to know what’s going on and you want to talk to others. In particular, you might feel sympathetic toward a friend or group, which in turn might prompt you to become involved in a charitable organization. Your Spidey sense is also heightened.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

People notice you. You can use this to your advantage if you want to set an example, especially one that is caring, compassionate and generous. You also feel confident about your finances. You might shop for something big!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your desire to expand your world is strong. Not only are you interested in travel, you’re also interested in big ideas and making progress via medicine or the law in a way that benefits others. Because your idealism is aroused, you want to help people in need.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re happy to work alone or behind the scenes. Nevertheless, you might do some fundraising or use the wealth and resources of someone else to benefit others. With Mars high in your chart, your ambition is aroused. Plus, you’re interested in talking to younger people — perhaps to rally your troops?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular day and you’re eager to shmooz, especially with members of the general public. You might have a strong connection with a partner, spouse or close friend. Your sympathies are aroused, perhaps for someone close to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a fabulous impression on others, which is something you can use if you want to persuade someone about something dear to your heart. This could be a charitable cause or something work-related or relevant to your health.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Do something different, because you’re keen for adventure! This is a marvellous day to shmooz. Accept invitations to socialize. Romantic interests and playful times with kids will delight. You feel particularly concerned about the welfare of children.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might want to help a family member. You’re certainly sensitive to the needs of family members right now. You might research ways to get funding or help for someone who needs assistance. Personally, travel and a chance to do something different appeals to you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

If you can do anything to help others, especially via your job, you will, because you feel sensitive to the concerns and problems of people around you. You might be personally generous with your own funds or look for ways to encourage others to be more altruistic.

Personal vaccination choices have far-reaching implications

Dan Lett 9 minute read Saturday, May. 11, 2019

I may never think of Winnipeg — and some of my fellow Winnipeggers — quite the same again.

Last month, Manitoba Health released data that showed only 67 per cent of children born in 2008 received the recommended two doses of measles vaccine. In Fort Garry and parts of St. Vital, it's even lower, at 58 and 55 per cent, respectively.

This is below both the provincial average of 73 per cent, and considerably less than the recommended 90 to 95 per cent rate necessary to achieve the desired "herd immunity" that is necessary to effectively eradicate a highly contagious disease.

In the wake of the publication of that data, it seemed that everyone was talking about measles vaccination. That's not hard to understand; similar low-vaccination trends have led to significant measles outbreaks all over the world — including in Canada, where Vancouver Island, Montreal and Ottawa have joined the ranks of affected communities.

Beach volleyball DJ, MC do the work of 12,000 fans

Jimmy Golen, The Associated Press 5 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021

TOKYO (AP) — The Olympic beach volleyball venue in Rio de Janeiro reverberated with the cheers of 12,000 fans, who infused the arena with a samba-dancing spirit that spilled out of the stadium onto Copacabana beach.

This time, there is only a master of ceremonies, a disc jockey, and the whirr of the cicadas in the nearby trees.

“I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do this,” MC Michael Rivas said during a break between the 10-a-day matches of the beach volleyball round-robin.

“The only thing we can do is try our best to make the players feel a little bit more comfortable, hopefully pump them up when they make good plays,” he said. “It’s tough — not only for us, but most importantly I think it’s the athletes are missing the audience more than we are.”

Give parents space to work out the details

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My mom has shocked me and my brother (we’re both teenagers) by getting a new boyfriend so soon after breaking up with our dad — a really nice guy.

I just told my dad about her new boyfriend, and he said, “Oh, I think that guy’s been on the scene a while.”

I went back to my mom and asked if her new “friend” (that’s what she calls him) had been on the scene a while, like dad told me.

She said, “Just a very little while.” What is that supposed to mean?”

Charge highlights need for action

The recent reporting regarding a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service employee accused of violating a protection order, following previous convictions related to criminal harassment and breaches of court orders against former partners, raises concerns that extend beyond a single individual.

I believe this case highlights important questions about how public institutions assess and respond to risks associated with intimate partner violence, stalking, coercive control and repeated violations of court-imposed conditions.

Gender-based violence is a public safety issue. Survivors are encouraged to seek protection orders and to call emergency services for safety and support. When those orders are breached, organizations have a responsibility to carefully consider workplace safety, public safety and survivor safety in their decision-making. Manitobans deserve confidence that public institutions have clear, consistent processes to assess risk and respond appropriately.

Concordia doctor denies responsibility for Calgary man’s permanent disability

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 3:52 PM CDT

A Concordia Hospital doctor accused in a negligence lawsuit after a Calgary man was left permanently disabled when he was given a massive overdose of a powerful sedative has denied she ordered he be given the drug.

Zachary Hoogerdyk’s father, Edward Hoogerdyk, and the Alberta government filed their statement of claim earlier this year in Court of King’s Bench naming the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, provincial health agency Shared Health, Concordia Hospital, Dr. Anna Ziomek and two other hospital staff as defendants.

Hoogerdyk, who was 23 at the time, went to Concordia’s urgent-care centre with flu-like symptoms and worsening breathing difficulties on March 25, 2024 while he was in Winnipeg on business and to visit family, the lawsuit says.

The claim alleges Ziomek diagnosed Hoogerdyk with low levels of oxygen in his blood and a strain of the flu, before ordering him to be intubated.
